Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

I AM CURRENTLY RECUPERATING FROM AN SUV ROLLOVER ACCIDENT. A TRUCK RAN A RED LIGHT AND HIT THE PASSENGER SIDE OF MY 2001 NISSAN XTERRA XE. THE XTERRA ROLLED OVER SEVERAL TIMES WITH THE ROOF CRUSHING IN ON ME, BREAKING THE WINDOWS OUT. WHEN IT STOPPED TUMBLING, IT WAS UPSIDE DOWN AND CONTINUED SLIDING DOWN THE ROAD ON THE ROOF. WHEN THE ROOF CAVED I WAS CRUSHED DOWN AND MY HEAD WENT TOWARD THE DOOR. MY HAIR, WHICH WAS BARELY SHOULDER LENGTH, WENT OUTSIDE THE WINDOW AND WAS CAUGHT BETWEEN THE ROOF AND THE ROAD. I WAS SLIDING UPSIDE DOWN, AT AN ANGLE, BEING HELD BY MY SEATBELT, MY HAIR TRAPPED BETWEEN THE ROOF OF THE NISSAN AND THE ROAD, WITH MY HAIR BEING RIPPED OUT. WHEN THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST I WAS TRAPPED BY MY REMAINING HAIR. WITNESSES LIFTED THE VEHICLE UP OFF MY HAIR TO FREE ME. THIS WAS A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE THAT HAS CAUSED ME INJURY BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY. THE LINK BELOW IS TO OUR LOCAL TELEVISION STATION'S WEBSITE WITH DETAILS OF THE ACCIDENT. IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN MORE DETAILS OR PHOTOS PLEASE CONTACT ME. THE TELEVISION REPORTER CONTACTED US AND EMAILED PICTURES FROM THE CRASH SITE. MY HUSBAND ALSO TOOK PHOTOS AT THE WRECKER LOT WITH OUR DIGITAL CAMERA. SO FAR THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY THE COLD START PROBLEM MY CAR IS HAVING. THE 2003 KIA RIO CINCO HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THE SAME COLD START PROBLEM. IN THE 1.5 YEARS I HAVE HAD THE CAR I HAVE NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH IT. THEY HAVE STATED THAT THE PROBLEM IS FIXED EVERY TIME, HOWEVER IT CONTINUES. *AK

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
