RoadVitals

Owner-reported complaints by category

Every complaint filed with NHTSA names one or more vehicle components. Rolling those components up into categories shows which systems owners are reporting across the whole database, rather than one vehicle at a time.

Complaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

No trend is shown yet — we do not have enough snapshot history

A change over time needs at least two daily snapshots to subtract one from the other. We currently hold 2 days of per-category history (snapshot of Aug 15, 2026), so there is nothing to compare against. The list below is therefore the current total per category, not a trend. Deltas appear here automatically once a second snapshot has been taken.

Categories with reportsComponent categories that at least one owner-reported complaint names.

Complaints categorisedComplaints counted once per category they name. A report naming two systems is counted in both, so this exceeds the number of distinct complaints.

A single complaint can name several components and is therefore counted in every category it touches; category totals sum to more than the number of distinct complaints. Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.
