Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

TRAILER HITCHES

Feb 16, 2007
80 units potentially affected
The defect: ON CERTAIN TRAVEL TRAILERS, THE HITCH TONGUE LOAD MAY BE INSUFFICIENT. WHEN THE TRAILER IS TOWED IN A DRY CONDITION, I.E., NO WATER, LIQUID PROPANE GAS, BATTERY, OR CARGO, IN AN EMPTY STATE, THE TRAILER MAY BEGIN TO SWAY.
The risk: THIS MAY OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING AND COULD LEAD TO THE LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE TOW VEHICLE/TRAILER COMBINATION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A HEAVIER STRUCTURAL SECTION IN THE COUPLER AREA AND AN ADD-ON KIT TO SUPPLEMENT THE TONGUE LOAD. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 9, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BIG FOOT AT 1-250-546-2155.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 BIGFOOT B-21 FB TRAILER. WHEN CAMPING AND USING THE FRESH WATER FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE, THE USED WATER IS THEN TRANSFERRED TO THE REAR OF THE TRAILER. THE FAILURE CAUSED THE TRAILER TO BECOME UNBALANCED AND TO SWAY WHILE DRIVING. RECALL # 07V060000 (TRAILER HITCHES) WAS FOUND. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REMEDY FOR THIS FAILURE IS TO ADD MORE WEIGHT TO THE FRONT OF THE TRAILER. HOWEVER, WHEN THE TRAILER IS FULLY LOADED, TOO MUCH WEIGHT ON THE HITCH WILL CAUSE IT TO FAIL. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, BUT THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED. NO OTHER VEHICLE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
