What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2000 BMW BMW Motorcycle, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKES TOTALLY FAILED WHEN THE ABS WAS USED ON A DIRT ROAD. STANDING ON THE REAR BRAKE FOOT PEDDLE AND SQUEEZING THE FRONT BRAKE HAND LEVER AS HARD AS POSSIBLE HAD NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER. JUST AS IF THEY WERENT EVEN USED. SECONDS EARLIER THE BRAKES WORKED PERFECTLY. AND AFTER RESTARTING THE MOTORCYCLE THEY WORKED PROPERLY AGAIN. IT IS UNBELIEVABLE TO ME THAT AN ABS SYSTEM WOULD BE DESIGNED IS A WAY THAT WHEN IT FAILED IT RENDERED THE BRAKES TOTALLY INOPERABLE: THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF FAIL SAFE. IN ONE CASE I NEARLY RAN OFF A CLIFF AT UNDER TEN MILES PER HOUR. ONCE I FIGURED OUT WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM I TURNED THE ABS OFF WHEN RIDING ON DIRT. NOT LONG AFTER THE LAST INCIDENT THE ABS QUIT WORKING COMPLETELY. THE DEALER TOLD ME THE TROUBLE CODE SAID THE ABS MODULATOR HAD A STUCK PISTON. I HAVE NOT YET REPLACED THE MODULATOR FIGURING I WAS MUCH SAFER WITHOUT THE ABS.

MISHLER BMW OF BEAVER DAM, WI INSTALLED A NEW PAIR OF METZLER ME880 TIRES ON MY 2000 BMW K1200 LT MOTORCYCLE RIMS ON AUGUST,5 2005. I INSTALLED THESE RIMS ON AUGUST,6 2005 AND PROCEEDED TO DRIVE APPOX. FIVE MILES. WHILE MAKING A RIGHT TURN ONTO A HIGHWAY THE BIKE STARTED TO SLIDE OUT FROM UNDERNEATH ME, I PUT MY RIGHT LEG DOWN IN AN ATTEMPT TO SUPPORT THE BIKE. THIS RESULTED IN A FRACTURE TO MY ANKLE AND LOWER LEG. I BELIEVE THIS ACCIDENT WAS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE RELEASE AGENT USED TO UNMOLD THE TIRES DURING THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS STILL ON THE TIRE. *JB
CENTER BELT ON TIRE SEPARATED FROM TIRE AND COMPLETE SIDE OF TIRE BLEW OUT. FOR ABOUT 5 TO 10 SECONDS BEFORE THE BLOWOUT IT SOUNDED LIKE I WAS HITTING SMALL ROAD REPAIR RIDGES AND THEN THE TIRE BLEW OUT. FIRESTONE GAVE ME 100% CREDIT ON TIRE, BUT WITH CURRENT NEWS REPORTS ON THIS TIRES SAFETY ISSUES FELT I NEEDED TO REPORT THE INCIDENT.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P265/70RI6 )
