2016 BMW X1 Body & structure Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the body or structure system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Body & structure reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Today the moonroof lining just fell off. It is hanging from both sides but one of the sides has a thin metal strip bunched up. I am unable to close the moonroof lining and because it hangs it blocks my vision to the back rear from the view mirror. Please keep in mind my BMW has low miles so how is this possible? I am trying to upload a picture but unable on the form.

The sunroof shade is a common failure point on these cars that’s not being addressed. A quick internet search provides hundreds of reports of the same with the 2016+ vehicles. While it may seem harmless, my 3 year old constantly had the sun beating on the top of his head, especially in the hot summer sun. I had to pay somebody to install 5% tint on the glass because the sun was enough to give his skin a light sunburn. BMW wants $2500 to fix what’s obviously a defect.

The panoramic sunroof shade blind has become detached due to failing adhesive. The consequence of this failure renders the vehicle difficult to drive and impacts safety of occupants and non occupants. To illustrate this issue, it is easier to quote the incident. On driving the vehicle the sunroof shade became unattached from its rail (right side). A natural thing to do is attempt to open the shade and close again in the hope that it re-attaches itself. This only made the situation worse. The loose shade impedes the drivers view out the right side of the vehicle. Driving the vehicle, it is crucial that this view should be clear and unobstructed (especially when lane changing on a freeway!). A corollary to the above issue is that the sagging loose blind is a distraction to the driver of the vehicle. The drivers attention needs to be 100% dedicated to the operation of the vehicle and the safety of others. This flapping distraction reduces this significantly.

The sunroof shade in my vehicle had been sagging on the passenger side and when I retracted it, it bunched up and is now off track and stuck in position. I currently have my vehicle at a BMW service center for them to take a look at it. In terms of safety, I am unsure that it is a safety concern but it sure is an inconvenience.

WHILE DRIVING I OPENED MY SUNROOF SHADE COVER AND HEARD A CRACKLING NOISE TURNED AROUND AND IT WAS ALL BUNDLED UP. THE COVER RIPPED OFF ON ONE SIDE. THE UNTIMELY FAILURE OF THE SHADE BLIND LEFT IT SAGGING/HANGING AND BLOCKING MY VIEW AS THE DRIVER WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE.

I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE RELATED TO THE ENGINE LIGHT ON 9/6/19 AND I WAS INFORM THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE THAT WAS NOT FIXABLE AND ITS RELATED TO THE OCCUPANS PROTECTION. A VERTICAL TRIM PIECE ON THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE, BETWEEN THE FRONT AND REAR DOORS, MAY MARGINALLY EXCEED A FEDERAL REQUIREMENT FOR AN UNBELTED COMPLIANCE TEST. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE PROVIDER THAT IN A SEVERE ACCIDENT, THIS COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY BECAUSE IN A ROLL OVER THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT WITHSTAND THE PRESSURE AND THE ROOF OF THE VEHICLE WOULD BE PUSHED INTO THE CABIN OF THE CAR. I TRAVEL OVER 100 MILES DAILY AND WITH MY CHILDREN. MY COMMUTE IS MAINLY ON THE HIGHWAY AND I AM CONCERNED FOR OUR SAFETY. THERE IS NO REMEDY FOR THIS RECALL AT THIS TIME THEREFORE I WOULD LIKE A FULL REFUND OR A REPLACEMENT.
