I am writing to formally file a report regarding the severe mechanical damage to the vehicle I purchased on June 14th, 2024, identified as A 2017 BMW- X1 sDrive28i, with VIN NUMBER [XXX] . It has come to my attention that this damage was not disclosed at the time of purchase, which constitutes a violation of consumer protection laws. As a consumer, I have the right to receive truthful and accurate information about the products I purchase. The failure to disclose significant mechanical issues is a violation of the Federal Trade Commission's regulations and applicable state consumer protection laws, including the prohibition against deceptive acts and practices. This vehicle poses as a safety risk to myself, and other's. Specifically, I have experienced the following issues with the vehicle: 1. Leaking oil 2. Loud engine. 3. Overheating. 4. Suspension issues. 5. Control arm alignment. 6. Shock and strut assembly. 7. Wheel alignment. 8. Turbocharger alignment 9. Engine assembly. Car displays a warning stating to ''secure vehicle with parking brake to prevent it from rolling away, Consult Service." This is a common issue with at least this model of vehicle and it's shared "sister" car the Mini cooper. "Secure vehicle against rolling" warning light comes on even while driving. It is a $10 spring but the dealer wants $3500+ to replace it. The entire center section and console needs to be taken apart just to get to the spring. Countless reports of this ... BMW is very casual about the concern and adamant on ignoring customer complaints ,but this is a serious safty issue involving the emergency brake and nonstop warning lights, this should be covered. Please enforce laws so that BMW gives proper attention to this vehicle brakes/transmission issue immediately and issue recall for the faulty parts. The vehicle has started displaying an error message when parking stating to secure the vehicle against rolling. This is due to a very common issue with a spring in the shifter needing to be replaced. Based on what I have read, the spring issue is occurring in almost all 2016 and 2017 bmw x1's. This should be a recall and not a $3k repair bill.

"SECURE VEHICLE WITH PARKING BREAK" is the error msg. This is a VERY common problem with the F48 F49 2017 BMW X1. The replacement part cost around $10. It is a very small spring deep in the center console. Dealer estimates to fix it are $2500-$3500 due to the labor cost. The is a video which explains the issue and how to replace it yourself if you are able. Some post have indicated that BMWNA will pay but there is no official recall and I am not sure if it is standard practice for the Dealer to replace the problem. Getting "Secure vehicle against rolling" warning with Transmission Error - Contact Service Center. Dealer indicated it was a faulty spring/component in the gear shift. They do not replace the spring, but the entire gear shift with a quoted repair/labor cost of $2,700. It is a sensor problem where the car cannot recognize if it is in Park. This is a common defect in the 2017 BMW X1 that occurs suddenly. BMW should issue a recall or extended warranty repair. Please investigate.

Every time I am stepping in and out of the car, a warning message comes both on the panel and connected drive that mentions secure vehicle against rolling - pictures attached. This is safety feature and should be fixed by BMW through a recall; there are similar posts also on the internet that describes the same problem with BMW models. The reverse camera won’t activate unless you hit the ok button thereby making it even more unsafe for any type of traffic that may be behind the car. Car is ok otherwise in terms of other functionalities.

Error code states please engage parking brake while car is in park to avoid rolling. Apparently this is a common problem with a faulty spring in the shift gear. BMW should do a recall as this is a very expensive repair and a common issue and is a safety problem.

A warning light appears: "Secure Vehicle Against Rolling Error". I went online to see what the issue was and found that there were numerous vehicles owners with the same exact problem. It appears that a component in the gear selector has failed to properly detect the gear selector position, specifically when it is in park. Even though the gear selector is in park and the parking brake is applied as indicated by lights and physically attempting to move the vehicle, there is a warning message to secure a vehicle with parking brake to prevent it from rolling. This creates a safety hazard because the gear selector can be shifted into Drive without having your foot on the brake. Note that a very large number of BMW owners have complained about this problem on social media and in the BMW message forum. This is clearly a wide-scale problem that stems from a faulty design, and it creates a potential safety hazard. As such, BMW should be forced to do a formal recall to correct this issue.

The dealer states that the shift lock solenoid needs replacing, and is a common issue that can make it impossible to shift gears If the vehicle rolls while in park, this could be a saftey risk for anyone nearby. As car is placed in park, and even after the parking brake is applied a message on the dash board and alert pops up saying "Secure Vehicle from Rolling" even though I am on a very flat street. Under details it states "Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center." The parking brake is engaged!

An Error / Warning Message occurs which states "Secure Vehicle Against Rolling" when the ignition is first activated. There is no obvious failure in parking or while driving. Only the Message which indicates that the vehicle should be service. This issue shows up rather frequently online and appears to be due to a broken spring in the gear box exchange. There is an extensive video as to how to replace the broken spring though it is rather difficult to access the spring itself, the cost of the spring is ~$5.00 USD. The Dealer Service Rep appears to have no knowledge of this issue - though his effort to offer a solution was to just bring the car in for service. Again, it was not difficult to find this issue online which appears to occur rather frequently as I can tell. Several comments have indicated that no performance issue was noted, and due to the high cost of repair (Labor Cost through BMW), no action was typically taken to resolve the issue. Please check to see if a formal recall is required to fix what appears to be a poor quality / design issue with a simple spring.

I went online to see what the issue was and found that there were numerous complaints by BMW X1 owners who discovered that it was a $10 spring in the shifter that dealers were charging between $2,000 and $3,000 to repair. Many opted not to do the repair due to the excessive cost, a decision that could prove catastrophic for some. In the likely event that your agency is already aware of this problem, I am writing to add my name to the list of complaints in the hope that NHTSA investigates and perhaps orders a recall.
