What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2011 Cadillac CTS, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
My air bag light is on. I brought it to the dealer for repair. The dealer told me the airbag is unfixable due to the fact that the "Passenger seat presence sensor is broken and no longer manufactured". I now have a car that is fully functional aside from this issue and it's unsafe to drive. The dealer also refused to buy the car back from me for fair market value.
The contact owns a 2011 Cadillac CTS. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine started to make an abnormal sound and the vehicle was inadvertently vibrating. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V341000 (Air Bags, Power Train). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 165,000.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim

Under previous GM Safety Recall Bulletin 14233, loss of grease from the center constant velocity (CV) joint over time results in vibrations of the propeller shaft that are transferred to the roll over sensor located on the floor above it. The condition was repaired under this recall in 2014, three years after the vehicle was manufactured. It is now 2022, and the same issue has happened again. Now, GM claims that there are no open recalls on the vehicle, yet the manufacturer defect remains and the issue has resurfaced. Being a safety recall, the repair should be covered by GM as stated in the bulletin (14233) regardless if the repair has been completed in the past, as the defect remains a safety issue. The vehicle in reference has 5 bolts sheared and the last remaining bolt fixing the center CV joint to the transmission was about to fall out, caused by the vibration of the CV joint that lost its grease.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2011 Cadillac CTS. The contact stated that while attempting to register the vehicle, it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a private sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 86,140 and at the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage was 162,290.
Water leaking in car like raining in car. The car radio and air conditioner panel wouldn’t turn off . It was draining batter after car would be turned off. Then after that water continues to leak. Took out fuse to stop from draining battery but had to buy new battery. Water continues to leak through car. Now ignition switch unable to turn off car . Unhooking the battery and fuse only way to turn off car. Take car to good year for diagnostics and was told water in car ( this I know cause I see raining in car.) This problem has been on going for a few years with the raining. I being unknowing that this would happen. Unable to give Goodyear 4000 dollars to fix problem with no guarantee it would fix problem. My friend that owns shop had to take seats and to find the water in bottom of car and wiring harness and BCM AND FUSE BOX AS WELL PROGRAMMING NEED TO BE DONE THIS AS WELL IS INFO FROM DIAGNOSIS FROM GOODYEAR. Everytime I get out of car just to turn off I would have to lift hood disconnect fuse and then disconnect battery cable . This in it self is unsafe to have to do. Cadillac was a dream car for me. It has become a nightmare. Cause this had been on going in other Cadillac made between 2008 and 2011 . I as well have videos of water in bottom of car and I have had to have car sealed to stop leaking only solution for now. Car is paid for. I NEED GMC TO JUST KNOW HOW UNFAIR IT IS FIR THEM TO HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF THIS PROBLEM AND PUT THE PUBLIC AT RISK OF DANGER. Hopefully after 2011 GMC fixed this problem in on going CADILLAC CARS . I am JUST DISAPPOINTED IN THE CORPORATIONS DISREGARDED FOR PUBLIC SAFTEY. Once again I always loved CADILLAC. Had an opportunity to have one and it has been a nightmare . Causing anxieties and depression. Cause I didn’t understand what was happening. Thank you .AS WELL I HAVE VIDEOS AND UNABLE TO UPLOAD
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
AFTER A 45 MINUTE DRIVE AND RETURNING HOME I PARKED MY CAR ON THE STREET IN FRONT OF MY HOME. THE CAR DROVE PERFECTLY NORMAL AS ALWAYS AND THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS OR ANYTHING ELSE TO INDICATE A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. I ENTERED MY HOUSE AND AS I WALKED PASTED MY KITCHEN WINDOW I COULD SEE FLAMES COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD ON THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE IT WAS ONLY A COUPLE OF MINUTES SINCE FROM THE TIME I ENTERED MY HOUSE. WITHIN 5 MINUTES THE ENTIRE CAR WAS ENGULFED WITH FLAMES. AFTER THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THEN FIRE I ASKED WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSE THE FIRE. I WAS TOLD IT WAS PROBABLY AN ELECTRICAL OR A FUEL MALFUNCTION.
THE TIMING CHAIN IS FAULTY. THIS IS A $2200 REPAIR. NUMEROUS PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM. PLEASE RECALL.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHILE DRIVING ON A WINDY MOUNTAIN ROAD AT APPROX 45 MPH, GOING INTO A SHARP LEFT HAND TURN, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT TURN ANY FURTHER. IT FELT AS THOUGH THE STEERING HAD GONE OUT COMPLETELY. THIS CAUSED ME TO TRAVEL STRAIGHT INTO AN EMBANKMENT AND LAUNCH INTO THE WOODS. NO INJURIES. AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. RADIATOR WAS BENT INTO A U SHAPE. NO IDEA WHY NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY
POWER STEERING WILL INTERMITTENTLY FAIL AT ALL SPEEDS CAUSING THE CAR TO BECOME VERY HARD TO STEER AT LOWER SPEEDS AND DIFFICULT TO CONTROL AT HIGHER SPEEDS. WARNING IS DISPLAYED IN THE DIC THAT READS "SERVICE POWER STEERING" NO VISIBLE CAUSE CAN BE FOUND. FLUID LEVELS ARE IN SPEC. TIRE PRESSURE IS IN SPEC. WHEN FAILURE OCCURS AT LOW SPEED, THE STEERING BECOMES VERY STIFF. WHEN FAILURE OCCURS AT HIGHER SPEED, STEERING BECOMES STIFF EFFECTING CONTROL.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
VEHICLE ENTERS A MODE AT RANDOM THAT ABRUPTLY REDUCES AND INHIBITS OR STOPS THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS THIS CAN CAUSE DANGEROUS CONDITIONS THAT CAN LEAD TO ACCIDENTS. AS IN MY CASE, I WAS INMOST STRUCK BY SEVERAL VEHICLES BECAUSE OF THE LOSS OF ACCELERATION AND FORWARD MOMENTUM AS I INITIATED A TURN AT AN INTERSECTION FROM ONE MAJOR ARTERY ONTO ANOTHER DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS HAZARDOUS AND DANGEROUS SITUATION WOULD NOT HAVE EXISTED OF NOT FOR THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AND ACCELERATION BY THE VEHICLE ENTERING THIS MODE. ON ANOTHER INSTANCE AT HIGHWAY SPEED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE LANES TO OVERTAKE A VEHICLE, THE CAR ENTERED THIS SAME MODE, AND WAS ALSO ALMOST STRUCK BECAUSE OF THE SUDDEN DECELERATION AND LOSS OF POWER. THIS ALSO OCCURRED ON A MAIN ARTERY IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AS WELL, AN ACCIDENT WAS AVOIDED IN THIS INSTANCE AS WELL DUE TO THE OTHER VEHICLES ABILITY TO BRAKE AND VEER AWAY. *TR
DRIVING TO WORK WENT TO STOP AND VEHICLE PULL TO THE SIDE AND WOULD NOT STOP NORMAL. I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THE REPORTED RIGHT REAR HUB NOT SENSING SPEED SIGNAL AND NEEDED TO REPLACE AND NOT COVERED UNDER MY WARRANTY. I SEE GM AND CADILLAC HAS HAD A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH THIS WHEEL HUD AND HAVE RECALLED ON OTHER MODEL YEARS. THESE ARE $600.00 PER WHEEL TO REPLACE AND THINK THAT THEY SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN 39,000 MILES. WOULD NOT WANT TO HAVE BEEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHEN THIS FAILS.I CONTACTED CADILLAC AND THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR WITHOUT CHARGE. *TR
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Cadillac CTS. The contact stated that upon inspection underneath the frame rail, the contact became aware that there was rust on both sides of the vehicle. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed because the VIN was not under recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 153,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Cadillac CTS. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing a water leak. The contact noticed that the front driver's side seat, door arm rest and floor were significantly wet after rainfall. The contact stated that the failure later occurred on the front passenger's side of the vehicle. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing electrical failures. The contact stated that after turning off the vehicle, the infotainment system, the heating system, the A/C, and the engine failed to turn off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the fuse box and wiring needed to be replaced due to the electrical failure. The contact stated that upon disconnecting the battery and removing the fuse, the vehicle turned off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the contact was informed that water was leaking onto the wiring on the floor. The sunroof drain was unclogged; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle remained with the mechanic, where it was undergoing additional water entry tests. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
HIGH MOUNT BRAKE LIGHT QUIT WORKING. I REPLACED THE LIGHT WITH A NEW LIGHT. I FOUND OUT THE BODY CONTROL MODULE HAS GONE OUT NOT THE LIGHT AND WILL BE AROUND $600 TO REPLACE. SINCE THEN I HAVE NOTICED A LOT OF OTHER CADILLAC CTS HIGH MOUNT BRAKE LIGHTS ARE OUT WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.
I PURCHASED A NEW 2011 CADILLAC CTS4 IN AUGUST 2012 FROM HERB CHAMBERS CADILLAC IN LYNNFIELD MA. SINCE THAT TIME, I HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR APPROXIMATELY 60,000 MILES. THIS PROBLEM AFFECTS VIRTUALLY ALL (TENS OF THOUSANDS!) CADILLAC CTS AND SRX VEHICLES BUILT SINCE 2008. AFTER DRIVING THE CAR FOR A FEW MONTHS, I NOTICED THAT CONDENSATION APPEARED IN THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES AFTER DRIVING IN OR PARKING IN THE RAIN. THE CONDENSATION WOULD NATURALLY EVAPORATE DURING EVAPORATE AFTER THE RAIN STOPPED. OVER TIME, THE LOW BEAMS BECAME DIMMER AND DIMMER. THEY HAVE BECOME SO DIM THAT DRIVING IN OTHER THAN WELL-LIT AREAS IS DANGEROUS. I CONTACTED THE MIKE ANAGNOS, SERVICE MANAGER AT HERB CHAMBERS CADILLAC. I PRESENTED THE PROBLEM TO HIM. WITHOUT INSPECTING THE CAR, HE STATED THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THAT THE HEADLIGHTS AND HEADLIGHT WIRING HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE STATED THE REPLACEMENT OF TWO HEADLIGHTS COST WOULD BE $1400.00. HE EXPLAINED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY WATER INGRESS TO THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY CAUSING THE HEADLIGHT CONNECTORS TO CORRODE AND 'MELT'. HE OFFERED NO FURTHER EXPLANATION AS TO WHY TWO HEADLIGHTS WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY 10% OF THE CAR'S BLUEBOOK VALUE. I ASKED HIM IF THE CORRODED WIRING THAT MELTED PRESENTED A FIRE HAZARD. HE DID NOT REPLY. I BELIEVE THAT THIS PRESENTS A RISK OF UNDER-HOOD FIRE. IF YOU DO AN INTERNET SEARCH ON CTS OR SRX DIM HEADLIGHTS, YOU WILL FIND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THE OUTRAGEOUS COST TO REPAIR. SEE ALSO CADILLACFORUM.COM AND JUSTANSWERS.COM MY RESEARCH INDICATED THAT WHEN CADILLAC REPAIRS THESE VEHICLES, THEY USE THE SAME PARTS THAT WERE USED WHEN THE CAR WAS BUILT...VIRTUALLY GUARANTEEING THAT THE PROBLEM WILL PRESENT ITSELF AGAIN. THIS CAR IS A DANGER TO DRIVE AT NIGHT AND A FIRE RISK FROM THE 'MELTED' WIRING HARNESS.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Cadillac CTS. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 -35 mph, there was a rattling noise detected from the front end of the vehicle. The brake pedal was applied but, failed to respond and crashed into a 2018 Ford. There were no reported injuries or fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent lot. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.
"CADILLAC RECALL" THE BRAKES DID NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY ON THE VEHICLE. THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AND AT TIMES THE CAR DID NOT IMMEDIATELY STOP WHEN BRAKES WERE PRESSED. AS A RESULT, I COULD NO LONGER DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND HAD TO FIND OTHER MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. IN ADDITION, RECALLS AND ISSUE WITH THIS CAR HAVE MADE THE NEWS.

I WAS TRAVELING SOUTH ON RT 10 PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND WHEN I HIT A POT HOLE, THAT SPLIT THE WHEELS DIAMETRICALLY, AND DEFLATING THE TIRES. THE WHEELS ARE MANUFACTURED BY TSW, JARAMA, 20 X8.5 5X120 ET35, AND 20 X10 5 X120 ET35 RESPECTIVELY. WHEN THE WHEELS SPLIT, I LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR, BUT MANAGED TO GET THE CAR OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. I CALLED THE RI STATE POLICE AND FILED AN INCIDENT REPORT. MY CONCERN IS THE WHEELS SPIT SIMILARLY EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE OF DIFFERENT SIZES, DIFFERENT BATCHES, AND SPLIT THE SAME. THIS RESULTED IN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, AND I THOUGHT WOULD BE IMPORTANT TO REPORT THE INCIDENT. I DID CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER, AND THEY SAID I MUST OF HIT SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT TO CAUSE TWO WHEELS TO BREAK. MY PERSPECTIVE IS THEY FAILED IDENTICALLY WHICH SUGGESTS A DESIGN ISSUE, AND A NOT A PRODUCT ISSUE. *TR
WHEN BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY AND TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT WE NOTICED A PRONOUNCED THUMP THAT WAS VERY NOTICEABLE AND WORRISOME. WE CHECKED WITH THE DEALER AND COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM AND THE DEALER CHECKED WITH GENERAL MOTORS WHO SAID IT WAS A DESIGN FLAW AND COULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. IT HAS BEEN DOING THE SAME THING UP TO THIS DATE. THE THUMP IS SO GREAT WE WONDER IF IT IS NOT DAMAGING THE CAR. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 CADILLAC CTS. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE SHOOK VIOLENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER TO BE REPAIRED, BUT THE ISSUE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,180.
S10 APPROPRIATE HANDLING- LETTER TO THE SECRETARY FROM CONSTITUENTS RE COPY OF LETTER TO MARY BARRA, CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO), GENERAL MOTORS EXPRESSING DISSATISFACTION WITH AFTER SERVICE CARE. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THERE WAS A LOUD TICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE, WHEN IT WAS STARTED. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE, AND ASSURED THE CONSUMER THE VEHICLE WAS DEPENDABLE. ON MAY 27, 2014 THE CONSUMER FELT A MILD VIBRATION THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. THE DEALER STATED THE BALANCE WAS OFF, BUT EVERYTHING WAS FINE. ON JUNE 15, 2014, WHILE DRIVING, THE CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD BANG, THEN A ROUGH TICKING SOUND AND FELT A SHUDDER THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. HE GENTLY BRAKED AND PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER, INSPECTED THE VEHICLE, BUT FOUND NOTHING WRONG. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED AGAIN, AND BEING TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. HE CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE A VIBRATION THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL, AND THE THUMPING BECAME MORE PRONOUNCED. ALSO, THE VEHICLE LURCHED AND A LOUD BANG AND HEAVY VIBRATION, WAS FLT THROUGHOUT THE CAR. THE CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE CONSUMER EXPLAINED TO THE DEALER ABOUT THE VIBRATION TEAR IN THE CLOTH SHIELD HE DISCOVERED, THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER BROUGHT TWO OF THE FOUR THAT HELD THE DRIVE SHAFT TOGETHER TO THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE VIBRATION TEAR WAS A CIGARETTE BURN, AND THE DRIVE SHAFT BOLTS FALLING OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND BEARING FAILURE WERE ISSUES ADDRESS SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE CONSUMER, THERE WAS LOW PITCHED WHISTLE DURING LIGHT TO MODERATE ACCELERATION, WHICH HE DID NOT HEAR WHEN HE FIRST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. ALSO, THERE WAS A LIGHT WEIGHT OIL/FLUID LEAKING FROM UNDER THE ENGINE AREA. HE NOTICED THE FUEL CONSUMPTION RANGE HAD DROPPED FROM 17-18 MPG TO 15 MPG. THE REAR END FELT LESS STABLE AND THERE WAS A SLIGHT SHIFT WHEN COMING OFF DRIVEWAYS OR OVER UNEVEN PAVEMENT. (2011 CADILLAC CTS).
