2014 Cadillac CTS Engine Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the engine system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Engine reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Burning smell, traction control, rear axle service along with suspension lights all came on the odometer. Shakes at low idle and wont stay running. Happened this weekend after pulling into the driveway after driving. We scanned code for cylinder 4 misfire. On scanner we had multiple other cylinder misfires but cylinder 4 is a dead misfire. We removed spark plug and found wore. We initially thought to start with replacing spark plugs and cylinder 4 coil. We consulted with customer and agreed to replace all spark plugs and cylinder 4 coil. After replacing we found no change in cylinder 4 misfire. We removed and re installed original coil and re tested. We performed a compression test on cylinder 4 and have 0 PSI. We thought possible carboned valve stuck open due to direct injection system. We performed a GDI carbon clean but still no change. We installed a borescope into cylinder to inspect and found what looks like a broken piston or part of a valv We scanned code for cylinder 4 misfire. Fault is internal engine, would need to tear down and re build or replace engine assembly. My safety was at risk driving 80mph on the highway perhaps engine could have seized or caused problems I’m not able to deal with along with having my infant and toddler in the car.

VEHICLE DISPLAYS 'SERVICE REAR AXLE' 'SERVICE STABILITRAK' 'PARK ASSIST TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE' 'AUTOMATIC SEATBELT TIGHTENING UNAVAILABLE'. 4 SEPARATE AND UNIQUE OCCURRENCES. SOME HAVE ALSO INCLUDED 'REDUCED ENGINE POWER'. TYPICALLY THE MESSAGES COME ON AND REDUCED POWER OCCURS AFTER EXPRESSWAY DRIVING, FOLLOWED BY STOP AND GO CITY DRIVING OR TRAFFIC. ALSO AMBIENT TEMPS ARE OVER 80 DEGREES WITH EACH OCCURRENCE. LASTLY ENGINE BAY IS EXTREMELY HOT AFTER THE SERVICE MESSAGES ARE DISPLAYED. ENGINE TEMPERATURE GAUGE DOES NOT INDICATE OVERHEATING (DISPLAYS UNDER THE HALFWAY POINT OF THE GAUGE). I HAVE 2 SEPARATE VIDEO DOCUMENTATIONS THAT CAN BE UPLOADED TO YOUTUBE. 1ST OCCURRENCE RESULTED IN CYLINDER HEAD REPLACEMENT UNDER WARRANTY. THE NEXT 3 OCCURRENCES HAVE ALL HAPPENED AFTER THE WARRANTY SERVICE. DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE AFTER THE CAR COOLS DOWN. CADILLAC CUSTOMER SERVICE SAID A SECOND DEALERSHIP REVIEW WAS REQUIRED EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALER WITH THE ABOVE SERVICE MESSAGES PRESENT. ATTACHED DOCUMENTS DISPLAY FIRST WARRANTY SERVICE, AND SECOND RECORD SERVICE MESSAGES BEING PRESENT. SIMILAR TSB ISSUED FOR THE ATS-V LF4 ENGINE FOR 'SERVICE REAR AXLE' OR 'REAR AXLE OFF', ALSO THE LT4 ENGINE HAS A TSB FOR ENGINE OVERHEATING AND GOING INTO REDUCED POWER MODE WHEN THE CHARGE AIR COOLING SYSTEM IS NOT REFILLED PROPERLY VIA VAC-N-FILL METHOD. THIS VEHICLE HAS A SIMILAR LIQUID TO AIR, CHARGE AIR COOLING SYSTEM, REQUIRING THE SAME TYPE OF FILL METHOD. FULL DISCLOSURE I AM A GENERAL MOTORS EMPLOYEE.
