The defect: CERTAIN TOURING TRAILERS WERE BUILT WITH TRAILING ARM SPINDLES (A PART OF THE TRAILER FRAME DESIGNED AND INTENDED TO BE TOWED BEHIND MOTORCYCLES) THAT MAY FATIGUE AND FAIL OVER TIME. THE SPINDLE MAY FRACTURE CAUSING THE ROAD WHEEL TO NO LONGER TRACK PROPERLY.
The risk: TRAILER (AND MOTORCYCLE) DIRECTIONAL STABILITY WOULD THEN BE COMPROMISED AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW FRAME FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHAMPION AT 800-875-0949.

Safety recall

Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

ODI RECEIVED AN OWNER LETTER ALLEGING THE LEFT WHEEL SEPARATED FROM HIS SUBJECT TRAILER WHEN THE STUB AXLE FRACTURED WHILE TOWING IT BEHIND HIS MOTORCYCLE ON JUNE 17, 2006.SUBSEQUENTLY, THE TRAILER OWNER RECEIVED A COPY OF A LETTER FROM CHAMPION ACKNOWLEDGING THAT TWO SEPARATIONS, INVOLVING OTHER CUSTOMERS, HAD OCCURRED PREVIOUSLY.THAT LETTER, DATED LATE 2004 AND ALLEGEDLY SENT TO ALL CUSTOMERS (THOUGH THE SUBJECT OWNER HERE CLAIMS HE NEVER RECEIVED IT), ADVISED CUSTOMERS THAT CHAMPION WAS MAKING AN UPGRADED AXLE DESIGN AVAILABLE, AT NO COST, TO THOSE CUSTOMERS WILLING TO PAY FOR ITS INSTALLATION.AFTER OPENING THIS PE AND DISCUSSING THE ALLEGED DEFECT WITH CHAMPION, THE COMPANY DECIDED TO RECALL THE TRAILERS TO CORRECT THE CONDITION (07V412).WITH THAT RECALL, CONDUCTED IN LIEU OF RESPONDING TO OUR AUGUST 16, 2007 INFORMATION REQUEST, THIS PE IS CLOSED.
