The defect: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: STREETCARS AND TRANSIT BUSES EQUIPPED WITH CERTAIN MERITOR-WABCO BRAKE SYSTEM TWO AND FOUR PORT RELAY VALVES. THE VALVE MAY STICK OPEN WHEN A HIGH-PRESSURE APPLICATION IS RELEASED.
The risk: WHEN THE VALVE STICKS OPEN, IT CAN RESULT IN A TOTAL LOSS OF AIR FROM EITHER THE SERVICE OR THE PARK BRAKE SYSTEM. THE DRIVER MAY LOSE BRAKING ABILITY UNDER A SERVICE APPLICATION, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THESE VALVES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 18, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHANCE COACH AT 1-888-391-1777 OR MERITOR WABCO AT 800-535-5560.

The defect: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: STREETCARS. ABRASION TO INSULATION ON SOME POSITIVE POWER CABLES CAN RESULT IN THE GROUNDING OF THE POWER CABLE.
The risk: THE ARCING AND HEAT GENERATED AS A RESULT OF THE GROUNDED CABLE CAN RESULT IN THE COMBUSTION OF INSULATION, PAINT, UNDER-COATING, AND OTHER CHASSIS COMPONENTS.
The remedy: OWNERS/OPERATORS WILL BE REQUESTED TO IMMEDIATELY INSPECT THEIR VEHICLES FOR POWER CABLE ABRASION DAMAGE AND REMOVE THE UNITS WITH VISIBLE CABLE DAMAGE FROM SERVICE. THEY WILL BE SHIPPED REPLACEMENT PARTS AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPAIR IMMEDIATELY. OWNER/OPERATORS WITH UNITS THAT HAVE NO VISIBLE CABLE DAMAGE WILL BE SHIPPED REPLACEMENT PARTS AND INSTRUCTIONS AS SOON AS THE PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. ALL PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE WITHIN 30 DAYS. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JANUARY 2001. OWNERS WHO DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REPAIR PARTS AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHANCE AT 1-888-391-1777.

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
