What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Dodge 1500, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V352000 (Air Bags); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.

Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
I'm always having issues with the airbag light coming on while driving it goes away then come back when there is a sudden move and causes something to trigger. also, I'm having issues with my headlight low mode not working I did a lot of research stating that many people are having the same issue and the problems have to do with the fuse box close to the battery. I'm also having an issue with the brake lamp going off on my dashboard not sure what that could be tried so many repairs and nothing seems to work.
HEAD LIGHT SWITCH WILL NOT TURN LIGHTS ON AN OFF, DOES NOT MATTER IF STATIONARY OR IN MOTION.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Several safety-critical systems on my vehicle are failing, and the symptoms match existing recalls shown on Kelley Blue Book for my VIN. However, the manufacturer (Dodge/Stellantis) shows only 4 recalls, all marked completed — despite ongoing issues. 1. ABS / Brake System: The ABS warning light is on continuously, indicating a malfunction in the ABS control module. This disables anti-lock braking, increasing the risk of skidding or loss of control during emergency stops. KBB shows a recall for this issue, but Dodge says it’s either not open for my VIN or already completed. The ABS light has remained on since 2. Front Wheel Bearing: There is a grinding noise and vibration from the front wheel area, suggesting a worn or failing wheel bearing. This poses a risk of steering loss or wheel detachment. No warning lights have appeared for this issue. 3. Transfer Case / 4WD: The 4WD system intermittently fails to engage or disengage, sometimes with clunking noises or jerking. This can cause unpredictable handling or loss of traction. Issue is still ongoing. 4. Electrical System: Intermittent electrical issues include random warning messages, dimming lights, and occasional no-starts. These affect essential safety systems and match known electrical recalls. These issues have not been confirmed by a dealer but are ongoing and present serious SAFETY risks. I believe my vehicle may have been incorrectly excluded from applicable recalls or that prior recall work was not properly completed. These components are available for inspection.
I was adjusting the steering wheel and the power completely shuts off. I had no steering power.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.

I was driving and the rear drive shaft fell out of the truck and the rear locked up making the truck undrivable. I heard this is a common problem in dodge rams and it is definitely a safety issue and there should be a recall to address this reoccurring problem that can cause a loss of life or life threatening accident
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim

This truck gets the death wobble at random times at Highway speeds , its almost caused me to crash a few times , something is not right with the front end
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, oil stains were found on the ground underneath the vehicle. The contact checked underneath the vehicle and became aware that the rear axle pinion nut was loose. The axle pinion nut was tightened. The contact stated that the oil stains on the ground persisted. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V796000 (POWER TRAIN); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
The pinion nut loosen up causing the pinion to lock down into the ring gear and locked the rear axle housing, ejecting the drive shaft.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
DODGE IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE. THEY HAVE UPDATED THE PART AND THERE ARE MANY CUSTOMER PAID REPAIRS. THE CONTROL BOX FOR THE HEATING AND A/C SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVE AND BREAKS AT THE BLEND DOOR. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE BLEND DOOR NO LONGER WORKS AND IT DISABLES THE DEFROSTER AND A/C. ON COOL OR COLD DAYS, THE WINDSHIELD CAN SUDDENLY FOG UP AND THERE IS NO WAY TO CLEAR THE VIEW AS AIR DOES NOT BLOW IN THAT DIRECTION. ON HOT DAYS, THE SYSTEM CAN NOT PUSH AIR OUT ENOUGH TO KEEP THE DRIVER FROM EXCESSIVE HEAT. THE PART NUMBER IS 68004226AC. THIS PART HAS BEEN SUPERSESSION CHAIN OF ABOUT 4 OTHER NUMBERS AS DODGE CORRECTED DESIGN FLAWS OVER THE YEARS. I WOULD ALSO NOTE THAT BECAUSE THIS INVOLVED A/C AND HEATING, MANY PEOPLE DO NOT NOTIFY NHTSA OF THE CONCERN, BUT IT IS VERY WELL DOCUMENTED AND KNOWN. IT IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM THAT CAUSES DRIVING ISSUES WITHOUT BEING REPORTED.
AT FIRST THE WIPERS WOULD STOP RANDOMLY (WHILE DRIVING IN A RAINSTORM) BUT I WOULD FIDDLE WITH THE SWITCH AND THEY WOULD NORMALLY COME BACK ON. IN THE LAST WEEK THEY BASICALLY QUIT WORKING ALTOGETHER OTHER THAN A RANDOM STROKE HERE OR THERE. I REPLACED THE WIPER/SIGNAL CONTROL SWITCH ON THE STEERING COLUMN YESTERDAY THINKING IT MUST BE WORN OUT. TO NO AVAIL, THE WIPERS ARE NOT WORKING AND AFTER RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET, I FIND THAT IT IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. PEOPLE ARE REPLACING PARTS, SPENDING MONEY AT SERVICE CENTERS AND NOT GETTING THE PROBLEM SOLVED. I LIVE IN THE RAINY NORTHWEST AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT IT IS A BIG SAFETY ISSUE NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE IN FRONT OF YOU WHILE NAVIGATING I-5 AT 70MPH AT SOME RANDOM POINT DURING A TRIP. THIS PROBLEM STARTED OVER A YEAR AGO BUT WAS ALWAYS A MOMENTARY THING AND WOULD RESOLVE ITSELF, BUT IT IS NOW A PERMANENT PROBLEM AND I WISH I KNEW WHAT PART REPLACEMENT WOULD RESOLVE IT.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly shut off. During the failure, the power steering and power braking system became inoperable. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle operated normally. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who replaced the spark plugs and ignition coils however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet contacted or notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 90,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, there was a rattling noise detected. There were fumes entering the cabin of the vehicle. The OEM and fuel warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed her that the exhaust manifold bolts had fractured. The contact called the local dealer who informed her there were no recalls on the vehicle for the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 136,000.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
This has been a issue going on several months . I can be driving down the road on any Giving day , road conditions wet or dry .I was driving 57 mph and vehicle in front of me hit the brakes ,causing me to hit mine as of sudden , but instead of stopping the brake pedal shifts toward the gas pedal causing me to brake and hit the gas at the same time. No I didn't wreck but came close as I corrected it very quick. This could have xausd me to run into on coming traffic and seriously caused fatal injuries or death. Thank God it wasn't raining . Vehicle hasn't been inspected because I don't have the money to have it inspected . The brake pedal I checked and you can take your hand and the pedal will go side to side over the gas pedal . There was no warning light or check engine light for this issue.
OWNER OF J.P. DIRECT AUTO SALES IN FLORENCE, KY SOLD ME A VEHICLE WITH ODOMETER DISCREPANCIES. THE OWNER SOLD THE VEHICLE AT A LITTLE OVER 133,000 MILES BUT THE ODOMETER HAS NEVER ROLLED OVER SINCE I DROVE THE TRUCK OFF THE LOT. FURTHERMORE, A MECHANIC PERFORMED AN ENGINE LIGHT READING THAT INDICATED AN ISSUE TRIPPED AROUND 146,000 MILES. THE OWNER IS NOT OWNING UP TO THE ODOMETER DISCREPANCY AND MAKING RETURNING THE TRUCK VERY DIFFICULT. *TR

Fuel tank leaking from the top of the tanks on my 2006 dodge ram Quad cab SLT 5.7 Liter truck. Been leaking a few years after buying my 2006 truck in 2006 brand new. Only way to get one is buying a new fuel tank which is to expensive to buy and unable to repair it is where this tank should have a recall.
STALLS AT STOPS, SLOW SPEEDS (ESPECIALLY WHEN BRAKING DOWNHILL) ONLY WHEN GAS TANK HAS BEEN COMPLETELY FILLED (FULL). LOSS OF STEERING AND BRAKES.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.

Truck making a whooping sound when driving and front tires wobbling and front suspension sloppy. Could be hub assembly, ball joints etc which can cause wheel to detach. All recalls for fwd and awd 2006 dodge ram 1500 but not for 4wd. My truck has every recall problem listed on the recall list for fwd and awd vehicles why weren't same recalls put out for the 4wdodels? TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 DODGE RAM 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH AND MAKING A RIGHT TURN, A LOUD POPPING NOISE WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. AFTER PARKING THE VEHICLE, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE SUB-FRAME HAD SEPARATED NEAR THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. I HAD AN ACCIDENT RELATED TO THE DRIVER'S SIDE GRAB HANDLE. I NEVER USUALLY USE IT TO GET INTO THE TRUCK, BUT DECIDED TO USE IT ON JUNE 7TH, 2017. THE TRUCK IS HARDLY EVER DRIVEN AND IN VERY, VERY GOOD CONDITION. THE GRAB HANDLE WAS NOT LOOSE IN ANY WAY PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT AND HAD NEVER BEEN WORKED ON OR REPLACED. WHEN I GRABBED THE HANDLE TO PULL MYSELF INTO THE TRUCK, WHICH WAS STATIONARY AND PARKED IN A DRIVEWAY, THE WHOLE PANEL RIPPED RIGHT OFF AND SENT ME FALLING HARD TO THE ASPHALT DRIVEWAY. I FELL ABOUT 3 FEET. BY THE WAY, I ONLY WEIGH ABOUT 120 LBS. THE FALL CAUSED ME TO BREAK MY LEFT HIP. I LAID IN THE DRIVEWAY SCREAMING IN EXCRUCIATING PAIN AND FOR HELP UNTIL SOMEONE FOUND ME. AN AMBULANCE TRANSPORTED ME TO A HOSPITAL. I HAD A PARTIAL HIP REPLACEMENT DUE TO THE HIP FRACTURE. UPON INSPECTION, IT LOOKED LIKE THE PANEL/GRAB HANDLE WAS SECURED INTO THE BODY OF THE TRUCK BY PLASTIC DISCS AND CLIPS! I WAS SHOCKED AND ASSUMED SOMETHING LIKE THAT WOULD'VE BEEN SECURED BY A MORE STURDY MATERIAL. THIS ACCIDENT HAS BEEN PHYSICALLY AND FINANCIALLY DEVASTATING FOR ME.

THE DRIVERS SEAT FOAM IS FALLING APART DUE CONTACT WITH SHARP EDGES IN THE SUPPORT BASKET AND FRAME WELDS. THE SEAT MOTOR HAS ALSO STOPPED WORKING. I CONTACTED DODGE CUSTOMER SERVICE (CARE #[XXX])AND WAS REFERRED TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE VEHICLE INSPECTED. I HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED AND DODGE REFUSED TO MAKE REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 33,000 MILES AND THE SEAT FOAM HAS TO BE REPLACED, ALONG WITH THE CLOTH FABRIC, THAT HAS A HOLE DUE TO THE RUBBING OF THE FABRIC IN THE METAL FRAME. I HAD TO COVER THE SEAT WITH A TOWEL TO PROTECT MY PANTS, AFTER I RIPPED THREE PAIR OF PANTS ON THE SHARP EDGES. I LOOKED AT A NUMBER OF DODGE OWNER WEBSITES AND MANY OWNERS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. ONE OWNER EVEN POSTED DETAILED PHOTOS OF HOW HE REPAIRED THE SHARP PARTS AND REPLACED THE SEAT FOAM AFTER DODGE REFUSED TO REPAIR HIS TRUCK. IT IS A CLEAR DEFECT AND THE TRUCK SHOULD BE RECALLED DUE TO THE RISK OF INJURY BY THE SHARP PARTS. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

Heating & air conditioning
Reports naming the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 DODGE RAM 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR CONDITIONING UNIT WOULD JAM WHEN AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO SWITCH THE UNIT TO OR FROM DEFROST. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR AND THE UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 09V158000 (VISIBILITY), BUT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 110,000. UPDATED 04/04/16*LJ *CN
THE PROBLEM STARTED IN 2009. WENT TO DRIVE THE TRUCK AND COULD NOT GET THE TRUCK TO DRIVE OVER 20 MPH. WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO A DEALER CLOSE BY AND HAD TO HAVE THE THROTTLE BODY POSITIONING SENSOR REPLACED. SINCE THAT DATE I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THIS SAME SENSOR CHANGED 8 MORE TIMES. EACH TIME THE PRIVATE MECHANIC TALKS TO CHRYSLER AND THEY RECOGNIZE THERE IS A FAULTY PROBLEM WITH THIS PART AND WILL NOT RECALL THE ITEM. WHEN THIS SENSOR GOES OUT IT WILL NOT LET YOU DRIVE MORE THAN ABOUT 20MPH. ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE ACCELERATED PEDAL POSITIONING SENSOR 4 TIMES. BLINKER PROBLEMS NOTED BY MANY OTHER CONSUMERS I HAVE ALSO HAD. WHERE YOU TURN ON THE LEFT BLINKER AND THE RIGHT BLINKER COMES ON. AS WELL AS THE A/C PROBLEM MANY CONSUMERS HAVE MENTIONED THE DOOR BREAKS AND THEN ALL YOU HAVE IS OUTSIDE AIR COMING IN. MY MECHANIC HAS TRIED TO GET REPLACEMENT PARTS FROM CHRYSLER TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM AND CHRYSLER DOES NOT SELL THIS PART (PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW THEY CAN MAKE THE VEHICLE AND NOT SELL THE PART TO REPAIR IT WHEN IT BREAKS KNOWING IT BREAKS OFTEN). TIE RODS HAVE ALSO BEEN A PROBLEM WITH MY TRUCK. NO MATTER HOW TIGHT THEY ARE THEY CONTINUE TO COME LOOSE EVEN AFTER BEING REPLACED AND THEN THE TRUCK WILL SHAKE. MY MAIN CONCERN AT THIS POINT IS IT INTERMITTENTLY WILL DIE WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. IT WILL START RIGHT BACK UP BUT WILL DIE AGAIN AND THEN IT WONT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM FOR 2 OR 3 DAYS AND THEN WILL DO IT AGAIN. HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM YET. IF ANYONE KNOWS ANY SUGGESTIONS TO LOOK AT PLEASE ADVISE. *JS
