2016 Dodge Charger Powertrain (other) Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the powertrain system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Powertrain (other) reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials. Every record below is an owner-reported complaint about the 2016 Dodge Charger submitted to NHTSA — not a confirmed defect, not a recall and not a manufacturer bulletin. 25 reports on file name it.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

The contract owns a 2016 Dodge Charger. The contact stated that while driving approximately 38 MPH, the vehicle began cranking. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road, where they called a relative. Once the relative arrived and inspected the vehicle, they noticed the drive shaft had detached. They drove back up the road the truck had just traveled and found the drive shaft. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic, who confirmed the drive shaft had detached from the vehicle, causing a fracture in both the transmission and transfer case. The contact found information on NHTSA Campaign Numbers 16V-043000 (Structure) and 18V-281000 (Power Train); reported a similar failure. The vehicle's drive shaft, transmission, and transfer case were scheduled for replacement. The manufacturer was informed, and it was confirmed that the VIN was not attached to any recalls. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Charger. The contact stated that while driving 40 MPH, while the accelerator pedal was depressed, there was an abnormal thumping sound coming from the front passenger’s side of the vehicle. The contact slowed down the thumping sound decreased; however, the faster the vehicle was driven, the louder the sound became. An independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was taken to be diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the front driveshaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V281000 (POWER TRAIN); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 89,996.

My charger was a michigan state patrol vehicle all its maint. Kept up on and all recalls fixed and repaired properly, yet driving at 45mph and my front driveshaft gives out and ends up smashing off my transmission and transfer case and it hit and almost went through the passanger side floor board right under the passanger seat which if it had it would of messed my passanger up bad ,so now 12k + in repairs. Dodge has had multiple recalls over the years for this exact problem, so i guess its time for another one, idk how you can say the recall has been fixed on vehicle if it breaks exactly the same way, that means its not fixed. 06

I have a continuous and ongoing problem with my draft shaft specifically the carrier bearing. This part has been giving me trouble for over a couple of years now and feel like it's going to break every time I pull in reverse and my local dealer manufacturer currently has no recalls for this which in 2018 they did.

I repaired my drive shaft in May of 2024 and I am already having this problem again. It appears this is a common issue with this vehicle. My vehicle is a 2016 Dodge charger. I paid $2000 to repair this the last time and am not happy that I am having the exact same problem again. It was repaired by Dodge, jeep, Chrysler in Springdale Ohio (Jake Sweeney)

Loud noise coming from where the center console should be. I thought it could be something wrapped around the drive shaft but instead the drive shaft carrier bearing needs replaced. You can't get a shop to buy just the part they have to replace the entire piece!

Car has strong smell of gas inside. Seeing by the other reports here that there is a regular problem with the fuel pump causing this issue. Is a safety hazard for obvious reasons. Drive shaft failed last year at less than 60,000 miles, but luckily had it replaced under dealership warranty. Others have not been so lucky, as I can see in these reports. Like tons of other reports here, door panels are also warping and disconnecting from the inside of the car. A completely cheap and poor design, and am shocked to see that nearly EVERY problem I've experienced with this car is COMMONLY experienced by other owners of this car. No idea how there haven't been more recalls, it's criminal that owners of this vehicle are left to foot the bill (THOUSANDS of $$$) for all of its defects.

No warning lights. Loses power, shuts down when traveling. Must pull over, come to a complete stop, put vehicle in park, wait 2-3 minutes sometime longer before it will start back up, Has been occurring for at least 6`months now. Repair shop/dealer unable to confirm due to the fact that it doesn't occur when test driven!!

The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Charger. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for an oil change and when the mechanic inspected the vehicle, he noticed that the universal driveshaft was corroded and needed to be replaced. The mechanic referred the contact to the manufacturer to see if the VIN was under recall. The contact notified the manufacturer of the issue and was informed that there was no recall on the vehicle. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle would be repaired under warranty. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer who replaced the driveshaft on the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000. The VIN was not available.

AS I WAS CONDUCTING MAINTENANCE ON MY VEHICLE, I HAD SEEN THAT MY VEHICLE'S DRIVE SHAFT IS NOT STABLE AND WHEN I MOVED IT, THE SHAFT WAS ABLE TO MOVE FREELY, AND THE CENTER SUPPORT BEARING WAS WORN DOWN COMPLETELY AND THIS IS THE REASON WHY MY VEHICLE IS NOT FUNCTIONING THE WAY IT SHOULD.

THE ENTIRE DRIVESHAFT OF THE VEHICLE BECOME EXTREMELY LOOSE. THE ENTIRE DRIVESHAFT HAD TO BE REPLACED AS IT WAS COMPLETELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE WITH THE SHAFT BEING AS LOOSE AS IT WAS. I WAS INFORMED IF THE DRIVESHAFT SEPARATED WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, IT COULD VERY LIKELY LEAD TO LOSS OF CONTROL AND BE FATAL.

ONE DAY WHEN I WAS DRIVING, I HEARD A REALLY LOUD SOUND COMING FROM MY CAR THAT HURT MY EARS SO I DROVE BACK HOME UNDER 5 MILES PER HOUR BECAUSE WHATEVER WAS HITTING UNDER THE HOOD OF MY CAR WAS WAY TOO LOUD. AS I WAS PARKING IN MY SPOT AT HOME, MY CAR SHUT OFF COMPLETELY. COULDN'T EVEN PUT IT IN PARK AND SAID TO CHECK ENGINE. I ENDED UP HAVING TO GET MY CAR TOWED TO LITHIA OF DODGE TO LOOK AT IT TO SEE WHATS WRONG BECAUSE I COULDNT EVEN TURN MY CAR BACK ON AT ALL OR DO ANYTHING WITH IT IT WAS UNDRIVEABLE. I WAS TOLD THE DRIVESHAFT BROKE AND SLAMMED AGAINST THE ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, ANYTHING BASICALLY CONNECTED TO THE DRIVESHAFT WAS DAMAGED. THEY DIDN'T TOTAL IT OUT AND TOLD ME TO CALL MY INSURANCE BUT THEN THEY SENT ME ELSEWHERE TOO AND FOR 6 MONTHS I COULD NOT GET ANYTHING WORKED OUT. COME TO FIND OUT, THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL ON 2016 DODGE CHARGERS FOR ONE OF THE REASONS BEING THE DRIVESHAFT NOT BEING TIGHTENED ENOUGH WHEN MADE OR SOMETHING THAT IT BROKE AND COULD POTENTIALLY LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT THAT COULD CAUSE INJURIES! I AM LUCKY THAT I DID NOT GET IN AN ACCIDENT OR HURT BECAUSE IT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS DRIVING. IT SAID THAT THE RECALL WAS COMPLETED BUT OF IT WAS, IT SHOULDNT HAVE BROKE ON MY CAR. I STOPPED PAYING MY LOAN AND EVERYTHING BECAUSE NO ONE WAS TOTALLING IT OUT OR SENDING ME TO SOMEONE WHO COULD HELP SO NOW MY CAR IS REPOSSESSED AND SAYS I STILL OWE ON IT WHICH I FEEL IS WRONG AND I SHOULDNT HAVE THE REPOSSESSION OR BE HAVING TO PAY ANYTHING ON IT.

THE INTERIOR DOOR PANELS ARE WARPING. I HAVE REPLACED ONE AND NEED TO DO THE OTHER. THE TRUNK LID HAD NO GAP BETWEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE LID AND REAR END, SO THERE WAS A CONSTANT VIBRATION CAUSING THE PAINT TO FLAKE AWAY. IF I STEP ON THE ACCELERATOR TOO HARD, THE ENGINES RPM SHOOTS UP BUT THE ENGINE GETS NO POWER AND THE REMAINS EITHER AT A STAND STILL OR WILL COAST UNTIL THE ISSUE PASSES.

THIS CAR HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS AND A NIGHTMARE. WHILE DRIVING AROUND 30 AND OVER THE CAR JERKS AND SHIFTS WHEN I AM COMING TO A STOP AND OR PRESSING ON GAS TO INCREASE SPEED. I HAD SOME SIMILAR ISSUES IN 2019 AND REPORTED THEM TO THE DEALERSHIP WESTHERR ORCHARD PARK. WESTHERR CLAIMS IT WAS ISSUES WITH THE DRIVE SHAFTS, GASKET, ENGINE OIL FILTER ADAPTOR HOUSING, DRIVETRAIN CONTROL MODULE AND AXLES. MOST OF ALL OF THESE REPAIRS HAVE BEEN DONE BY THEM AND WHERE NOT FIXED CORRECTLY AND WITH DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS AND PARTS.

BOUGHT THE CAR 9/2/18 AND THE REDDING DEALERSHIP USED CAR MANAGER DAVE BIRCH AND THE OWNER STEVE ROBERTS HAVE BEEN UNPROFESSIONAL IN TALKING TO ME. WHEN I ASKED ABOUT THE STATUS ON MY CAR AND IS THIS A NORMAL SITUATION AND STANDARD PROCEDURE AFTER BUYING NOT ONE BUT TWO CARS AND TAKING A CAR IN FOR REPAIRS NOT HAVING THE CAR WITH LESS THAN 7016 MILES AND AFTER REPAIRING A SCRATCH ON THE BACK BUMPER AND HAVING TO REPLACE THE TIRES WHICH SHOULD'VE BEEN REPLACED BEFORE PUTTING THE CAR ON THE LOT, BECAUSE THE SALES AGENT AND USED CAR MANAGER HAD TO TEST THE DEPTH OF THE TIRES WHICH THEY SHOULDN'T HAD TO CHECK IF THEY WOULD'VE JUST REPLACED THE TIRES IN THE BEGINNING ALL THIS COULD'VE BEEN AVOIDED NOW THERE'S A CRACK IN THE WINDSHIELD WHEN THE CARE WAS PURCHASED WINDSHIELD, THE OWNER AND USED CAR MANAGER ACTUALLY ASKED '' WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT FROM US DAVID WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT US TO DO FOR YOU '' AFTER I ASKED IS THIS A NORMAL SITUATION AND PROCEDURE. WELL AFTER THE USED CAR MANAGER WAS RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL TO ME I WAS RUDE TO HIM AND THEN WHEN I ASKED TO SPEAK TO HIM HE WAS NOT TAKING MY CALLS ANYMORE AND LETTING ALL MY MESSAGES GO TO VOICEMAIL SO WHEN THE MANAGER DECIDED TO DO THAT THAT'S WHEN I TALKED TO THE OWNER STEVE HE STARTED ACTING THE SAME WAY THEY DIDN'T WANT TO TALK TO ME AND SWITCHED ME TO GUY THE SERVICE PART MANAGER. IF THIS IS HOW DODGE DEALERSHIPS OPERATE THEN I'LL NEVER RECOMMEND ANYONE FROM BUYING A CAR FROM ANY DODGE DEALERSHIP OR ANY DODGE VEHICLE FOR THAT MATTER I DON'T WORK DUE TO THE REDDING WILDFIRES BURNING DOWN MY HOUSE AND BUSINESS WHICH I OWNED A PARTY BUS COMPANY AND WILL PURSUE THIS TO THE VERY END LUCKILY FOR ME THIS IS A SMALL TOWN & THE PEOPLE OF REDDING
