Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Dodge Ram 2500, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I took my vehicle into the dealership. Almost three weeks ago for a recall on the front end, a steering component. However, they told us that the parts were back ordered several days after the vehicle had been there for three weeks. And then all of a sudden, they call and a week and a 1 after that. And send a vehicle is done. I picked up the vehicle yesterday and it is not fixed. The problem still exists. We just about crashed on the freeway coming home when it started to do the death wobble shake that dodge ram is known for we nearly wrecked the truck on the freeway. It is not safe to drive. And the problem is not fixed. We have had nothing but problems with this dealership. In the past, and I believe they said they performed the recall safety issue. However, the truck was never fixed. We have pictures and proof

Headlights- the passenger side headlight would come on then go off whenever it wants to and now the low beam does not work. I have tested the connection and replaced the bulb several times and still does not work. When driving at night it makes it difficult to see. And is also against the law to not having working headlights. Trailer lights- the drivers side brake light/blinker on any trailer that’s hooked to my truck does not work. I have taken it the a local shop (street dynamics which is out of business now) several times over the last 5 years to see if they can fix the issue. The fix was to put a jumper wire from the truck brake light to the trailer connector. I still do not have a blinker on the driver side of the trailer. Windshield wipers- the windshield wipers will come on and off whenever they want. Some times when it is raining they will turn on with the switch then will turn off while driving or will stay on after the switch is turned off. The switch has been replaced and did not change anything. It is dangerous to drive the truck during inclement weather. I am a Police officer and have been for 17 years. In the last 12 plus years I have owned the truck which is a 2006 Dodge 2500 I have been told by several dodge technicians and mechanics that the issues I’m having is being caused by the TIPM. While researching the tipm I have found out all of my trucks issues are similar to a lot of other people’s 2006 dodge 2500s. I have had issues with the trailer brake lights since I bought it.

This is a safety concern I have faced on multiple occasions with this pickup. I have owned it since new and kept up on maintenance and recalls. Today it happened again. What it is, the windshield wipers will erratically wipe, sometimes not wipe, not shut off, as well as come on at random. I reside in the wet side of the state of Oregon where it can be super dangerous to loose wipers in a torrential downpour of rain or snow. This pickup get use predominately for pulling trailers, which yet again adds another layer of danger when I lose much visibility of the road ahead of me. The first time this got really bad I took it to the dealer out of warranty and they diagnosed for three hours to tell me it was 90% probable that it was the Total Ingratiated Power Control Module. I said yes I will pay the total combined $1,400 to hopefully fix the problem. At times after this it has had occasional issues. Today, [XXX], it was acting about like it did the years ago that the dealer extracted, what I felt to be good money, to fix windshield wipers. I suspect in the round of diagnosis they may have messed with the wiper motor and made things marginally better for the years that I have since got out of it. On the dealer fix I researched the problem and it seemed to be kinda common in 2006 Dodge Rams at the time. Today I was doing more research to go about fixing this problem myself since the dealer fix has always been unsatisfactory to me. In this research I found two recalls for 2008-2009 Dodge Rams (NHTSA campaign #s 09V08400 & 09E009000) with what sound to be the same problem. Did a little more digging and between the part numbers, the parts appear to be the same between the model year 2006 & 2008 Dodge Ram, 2500 SLT diesel engine (this probably true to other trim and drive train too). Should this recall be extended to other vehicles that also share the same part, if it is truly the same part off the factory floor? I know I fight similar trouble. The pickup has had issue with being very difficult to come out of park. Upon searching internet is seems this is very common and expensive to fix being one of two (or both) things. The shift cable linkage and bushings premature wear, or the valve body release allowing the shifter to be removed from park. Either way concern is this will fail causing inability to shift safely into park and prevent an accident. Extremely unsafe. I have been advised this was already corrected by qualified dealer, but no change. Vehicle has just under 93,000 miles on it and only highway

NHTSA ID 11645264 · filed Feb 27, 2025

The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500. The contact stated that the transfer case was making abnormal shifting sounds while the vehicle was parked. The contact stated that the transfer case was replaced; however, the failure persisted. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was parked while he was working in the garage. The contact stated that he heard a clicking sound coming from the engine, and the vehicle started rolling backwards towards the street. The contact stated that he immediately entered the vehicle and engaged the electronic parking brake, and the vehicle stopped. The contact also stated that the vehicle hesitated to shift into the proper gear while driving. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in TSB Number: 18-091-22. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the computer was flashed; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and contacted the dealer; however, no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 223,800.

NHTSA ID 11711760 · filed Jan 18, 2026

Good Morning! On April 9, 2023 I was going to pickup my Son in his 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 at LAX. He was returning from a 3 week trip to Chile. After taking the transmission out of gear I attempted to start the truck, but the battery was dead. I got out of the cab and released what I thought was the hood release but released the emergency brake instead. The front wheel was turned at about a 40 deg. angle to the right in my driveway which is on about a 15 deg slope to the street. The truck rolled back pinning my left leg under the left front tire, while the open drivers side door pushed me towards the now moving wheel. the left front wheel continued to roll over my left hand and my right chest grazing my left side of my head. The truck continued to roll down the street and into a neighbors truck. I suffered 13 broken ribs, a collapsed right lung, a partially collapsed left lung, a broken shoulder, and a broken left eye socket bone, deep vein thrombosis in both lower legs, 2 weeks in the ICU, 1 week in the hospital and 1 week in rehab. I am presently in home rehab. The man across the street from me at one time worked as a service manager / mechanic for a local automotive shop, and told me that he has made the same mistake many times of mistaken the emergency brake release for the hood release. I would recommend relocating the brake release to the right of the steering wheel on all vehicles that have a foot actuated emergency brake.

FUEL TANK STRAPS CORRODED AND BROKE OFF WHICH CAUSED FUEL TANK TO FALL OUT OF VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD.

NHTSA ID 11412767 · filed Apr 19, 2021

WHILE DRIVING ON NORMAL PAVED ROAD, NO EXCESSIVE BUMPS) AT AROUND 40 MPH, THE FUEL TANK BRACKETS (STRAPS) BROKE AND THE FUEL TANK FELL TO THE GROUND. I HEARD IT RIGHT AWAY AND ONLY DROVE AN ADDITIONAL FEW SECONDS TO A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD (NOT KNOW WHAT INITIAL HAPPENED - THOUGHT SOMETHING WAS CAUGHT IN THE WHEEL WELL). WHEN I NOTICED THE PROBLEM, I IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND CALLED FOR A TOW TRUCK. WHILE WAITING, I CLEARLY NOTICED THE TANK STRAPS WERE RUSTED AND FAILED. ALSO WHILE WAITING FOR THE TOW TRUCK, I SEARCHED TO SEE IF OTHERS HAD A SIMILAR ISSUE. I FOUND THAT RAM DOES HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE, BUT IT DOESN'T COVER THE YEAR OF MY TRUCK. CLEARLY THE YEARS AFFECTED NEED TO BE EXPANDED AS MY VEHICLE HAD THE EXACT FAILURE THAT THE RECALL ADDRESSED. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED ON OCTOBER 4, 2020 AT APPROXIMATELY 12:15 IN THE AFTERNOON ON RTE 122 IN BLACKSTONE MA JUST SOUTH OF THE MILLVILLE BORDER. NO POLICE EVER PASSED OR STOPPED BY. NO OTHER VEHICLES WERE INVOLVED.

NO INDICATORS OF ANY ISSUES TO THIS - WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 65 AND 75 MPH THE TRUCK BEGINS TO SMOKE NOT ONLY OUT OF THE BACK END OF THE TRUCK BUT UNDERNEATH THE BODY AS WELL AS UNDER THE HOOD OF THE TRUCK, AND WE BEGAN TO SMELL FUEL. THE CEL LIGHT THEN COMES ON. WE HAD THE WHOLE FAMILY IN THE TRUCK AND A SMALL FIRE EXTINGUISHER. THIS IS REALLY NERVING SINCE DODGE/CHRYSLER AS WELL AS CUMMINS KNOWING THIS LINE IS A PROBLEM AND HAS NOT DONE A DARN THING ABOUT IT TO RECTIFY ANY COMPENSATION. I HATE TO SAY THIS BUT I GUESS IT IS GOING TO TAKE SOMEONE GETTING REALLY HURT BUT YOUR ATTITUDE OF NOT WANTING RECALL SUCH A FIRE HAZARD! TWO TIMES I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE ACCELERATOR STICKING AND THERE WAS NO WAY TO SLOW MY TRUCK DOWN TO GAIN CONTROL. BOTH TIMES IT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS PASSING ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN I WAS ON HIGHWAY 99 BETWEEN CORVALLIS, OR AND MONMOUTH, OR. BOTH TIMES IT WAS ON A STRAIGHT STRETCH. WHEN I WENT TO PASS, I PRESSED ON THE ACCELERATOR TO GET SOME SPEED. I FLOORED IT. BOTH TIMES THE GAS PEDAL STUCK DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET IT TO RELEASE. THE TRUCK KEPT ACCELERATING TO UP OVER 100 MPH BEFORE THE GAS PEDAL RELEASED AND I WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE TRUCK AGAIN. NOTHING I DID WOULD GET IT TO RELEASE. IT WAS EXTREMELY SCARY AND I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO WRECK, IF NOT DIE. I AM NOT SURE WHICH PART CAUSED THIS BUT IT IS CONNECTED TO THE GAS PEDAL. IT MIGHT BE AN INTERNAL COMPONENT, I JUST DON'T KNOW, SO IT IS UNKNOWN. IT SEEMS TO DO IT WHEN THE GAS PEDAL IS FLOORED AS THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED BOTH TIMES TO ME. I WASN'T SURE IF I SHOULD LIST EACH TIME SEPARATELY SO YOU KNEW IT WAS MORE THAN ONCE. I WILL BE TAKING MY TRUCK IN TO BE CHECKED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SINCE THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED TWICE AND I DON'T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN AGAIN.

TRUCK WILL RANDOMLY HAVE NO THROTTLE RESPONSE EITHER WHILE DRIVING OR COMING FROM A DEAD-STOP. IT HAS ALSO SEEMED TO GET STUCK FOR A FEW SECONDS BEFORE ALSO, WHICH HAS ALSO HAPPENED TWICE. I WAS CROSSING A RAILROAD WHEN THE PEDAL LOST RESPONSE THEREFORE, I HAD TO ROLL OFF OF THE RAILROAD. IT HAS ALSO HAPPENED WHILE I WAS CROSSING AN INTERSECTION WITH A TRAILER. I LOST ALL POWER AND THE THROTTLE WOULDN'T RESPOND. SOMETIMES, WHEN I RESTART THE TRUCK, IT WILL WORK FOR A LITTLE WHILE. OVERALL, IT IS CONSISTENT THEREFORE, IT WORRIES ME WHEN I DRIVE IT BECAUSE IT WILL HAPPEN WITHOUT WARNING.

Our first issue with the LT 265/70R17 was in 2020. We had a defective front driver ( tread came completely off the tire) of a Dodge Ram 2500. Replaced it and bought another new one, both new in front now @Sam’s Club. Drove to CA. On the way home, back left tire (drivers side) EXPLODED !! on hwy.10. Lost control of the truck and went off into the center divider, the truck rolled over and was completely destroyed. My wife had a concussion and had to have shoulder surgery due to the roll over. She almost lost her life and I got a hernia from impact. Our dog ( STD. Poodle)was catapulted from backseat about 20ft. Everyone lived. We did all the right things. Tires were inflated correctly, drove speed limit, temp. 75, 9:00am. No traffic. DPS deemed it NO FAULT because the tread that had come off the tire had 10/32nds and was fine. What went wrong????

NHTSA ID 11730956 · filed Apr 13, 2026

Tire size was not correct. Actual was lt265/70r17 Rating 121/118S Just had two tires installed on the rear of the said truck. While pulling 5 ton bumper pull trailer, the amount of sidewall flex on these tires made it dangerous to drive. The amount of reverse track, which I don't know how to explain other than when you turn left the back of the vehicle will actually swing out (in the case of a left steering input, the back of the vehicle will go right, racing drivers also call this being lose). When other vehicles especially larger vehicles like semis past my vehicle or even the trailer behind it, it would push the back end of my vehicle and induce a turn... Talk about white knuckle driving .. I only drove about 200 mi to get home after having the cooper tires installed, I'm having them removed immediately as they are extremely dangerous to drive with. When I talked to Cooper they mention these tires were specifically made for Walmart, they are quite cheap. Also, the only reason I bought them is because I was on the side of the road with another tire that had separated tread but it was due to age and needed to get home. Walmart was the only tire place that could install tires. The previous michelins I had on there were great and did not have this issue(only the rear tires were replaced) I am working with Cooper and their satisfaction guaranteed promise, where they will switch them out with different tires and I just pay the difference, but I do not believe these tires should be sold to the public with that weight rating. Sadly just a week before Walmart put on passenger tires on that same truck when it called for light truck tires. But that's a different issue all in itself It almost felt like the tires were under inflated, but they are perfectly at 70 PSI as required by Dodge. I checked this pressure the next day to confirm
