2007 Ducati Sport Classic Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2007 Ducati Sport Classic, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

THE STOCK PLASTIC GAS TANK EXPANDED AND IT COMES OUT OF IT'S INTENDED POSITION.

NHTSA ID 11388630 · filed Jan 18, 2021

2007 DUCATI SPORT 1000S - GAS TANK HAS BEEN DEFORMED. IT NO LONGER SITS PROPERLY IN THE MOUNTING POINTS ON THE SIDE. IT HAS EXPANDED BEYOND THE POINT OF SITTING PROPERLY IN THE MOUNTING POINTS IN THE FRONT. THE TANK NOW RESTS UNSECURED ON THE FRAME AND WILL SHIFT AND TEETER FROM SIDE TO SIDE WHILE THE BIKE IS IN MOTION.

IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THE POLYCARBONATE FUEL TANK ON THE MOTORCYCLE HAS SAGGED OR SPREAD, MAKING THE FRONT OF THE TANK LOOSE. WHEN THE TANK SPREAD, THE FRONT GROMMETS NO LONGER MAKE CONTACT WITH THE TANK, MAKING IT LOOSE. THIS POSES A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. THIS FAILURE DID NOT HAPPEN ALL AT ONCE, BUT OVER TIME. *TR

I PURCHASED A DUCATI SPORT CLASSIC GT1000 IN EARLY 2007. TANK DEFORMED DURING REGULAR USE. CONTACTED DUCATI DEALER WHICH, AFTER SOME BACK AND FORTH, AGREED TO REPLACE THE TANK WITH A NEW ONE. ALREADY AT THAT TIME I WAS WARNED THAT THE NEW TANK IS THE SAME AND THE ISSUE WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THE TANK DEFORMED AGAIN AND I JUST (NOVEMBER 2010) VISITED THE DEALER AGAIN. THIS TIME, THE DEALER WAS VERY HELPFUL. THEY TOOK MEASUREMENTS (TANK SPREAD BY 2 CM), RELOCATED THE HOLDING BRACKETS TO TEMPORARILY SECURE THE TANK BETTER AND WITHIN A COUPLE OF DAYS I RECEIVED A CALL THAT AN ORDER FOR A NEW TANK HAS BEEN PLACED. NO CHANGES TO THE TANK HAVE BEEN MADE, SO I FULLY EXPECT THIS ISSUE TO HAPPEN AGAIN. THE DEALER SUGGESTED THAT SOME PEOPLE DECIDED TO COAT THE INSIDE OF THE TANK. HOWEVER, THAT WOULD BE MY EXPENSE. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT FIVE YEARS AFTER PURCHASE DATE, DUCATI WOULD NO LONGER SUPPORT FREE REPLACEMENTS. ONCE THE TANK STARTS SPREADING IT BECOMES VERY LOOSE AND ACTUALLY STARTS INTERFERING WITH STEERING. WHEN TURNING THE HANDLE BARS TO THE RIGHT, THE TOP OF THE FORK ACTUALLY TOUCHES THE TANK. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, AUTHORIZATION FOR THE REPLACEMENT IS GIVEN BY DUCATI NORTH AMERICA. HOWEVER NOTHING IS DONE TO SOLVE THE ROOT CAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. I AM CURRENTLY WAITING FOR A CALL FROM THE DEALER TO HAVE THE NEW (3RD) TANK INSTALLED ON MY BIKE. *TR

FUEL TANK ON MY 2007 DUCATI GT1000 HAS WARPED/DISTORTED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TANK NO LONGER FITS IN IT'S FRAME MOUNTS PROPERLY. THIS UNIT CURRENTLY HAS 16,500 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THIS IS THE 2ND FUEL TANK TO BE MOUNTED ON THIS MOTORCYCLE. THE ORIGINAL TANK THAT WAS MOUNTED AT THE TIME THE MOTORCYCLE WAS ASSEMBLED ALSO HAD THE SAME WARP/DISTORTION ISSUES AT APPROX 5000 MILES AND WAS REPLACED UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY. *TR

I PURCHASED A NEW 2007 DUCATI GT1000 MOTORCYCLE IN LONGWOOD, FLORIDA IN JULY 2006. SINCE THAT TIME IT HAS BEEN BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE TO FIX AN ENGINE IDLE PROBLEM; THE VEHICLE WILL NOT IDLE CORRECTLY AND DIES WHEN STOPPING AT STOP SIGNS AND TRAFFIC LIGHTS, FORCING A RE-START. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE FIRST TIME THE VEHICLE WAS IN FOR THIS ISSUE WAS APRIL 2007 FOR THREE (3) WEEKS. AT THAT TIME, THE SHOP REPLACED THE "STEPPER" MOTOR AND IT RAN ADEQUATELY FOR A FEW MONTHS. IN SEPTEMBER, THE SYMPTOMS RETURNED AND WORSENED. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP ON NOVEMBER 9. IT IS NOW FOUR WEEKS LATER. IN THE INTERIM, THE SHOP ORDERED AND REPLACED TWO ECU UNITS (A EURO VERSION WAS SAID TO HAVE WORKED FINE, BUT WAS NOT TO BE USED IN THE USA AND SO WAS RETURNED), A SECOND "STEPPER" MOTOR WHICH WAS KNOWN TO BE GOOD, AND TODAY I WAS INFORMED THEY ARE GOING TO REPLACE "THROTTLE BODIES" WHICH HAVE TO BE ORDERED. I BELIEVE THIS IS A MAJOR MANUFACTURING ISSUE, AND IT HAS BEEN REPORTED ON VARIOUS WEBSITES THAT THE ONLY REAL WAY TO "CURE" THE PROBLEM IS TO PURCHASE AN AFTER-MARKET EXHAUST SYSTEM WITH A NEW "OPEN CIRCUIT" ECU THAT CAN TWEAKED. THE FACTORY ECU IS SUPPOSEDLY A "CLOSED CIRCUIT" ECU AND NOT AMENABLE TO ADJUSTMENT. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND A LIFE THREATENING HAZARD. DUCATI SHOULD EITHER PROVIDE AN IMMEDIATE FIX AND EXTEND THE WARRANTY FOR THE PERIOD OF TIME THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP, OR DO A FULL RE-PURCHASE. *TR
