The defect: East Manufacturing Corp. (East Manufacturing) is recalling certain 2018-2021 MMX trailers equipped with Ingersoll Smart-Steer self steer axles. The steering arm may detach from the steering knuckle during certain low-speed, high-side loading maneuvers.
The risk: A detached steering arm may cause a loss of steering control. In addition, attachment hardware may fall and become a road hazard. Both of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Dealers will inspect the steering arm and apply welds, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 19, 2021. Owners may contact East Manufacturing customer service at 1-352-861-3612.

Safety recall

NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
