The defect: ON CERTAIN TRANSIT BUSES EQUIPPED WITH ARVIN-MERITOR AND TRW 20-EDL BALL SOCKET ASSEMBLIES HAVE A LESS ROBUST BEARING DESIGN, WHICH LEADS TO HIGHER WEAR RATES AND MORE RAPID WEAR-OUT THAN PREVIOUS DESIGNS.
The risk: THIS PREMATURE WEAR-OUT OF THE BALL SOCKET ASSEMBLIES MAY RESULT IN THE SEPARATION OF THE TIE-ROD ASSEMBLY WHICH, IN TURN, COULD LEAD TO A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE BUS AND POSSIBLE INJURY OF DEATH TO THE OCCUPANTS OF THE BUS IN THE EVENT OF SUCH CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BALL SOCKET ASSEMBLIES FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 28, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ELDORADO AT 909-591-9557.

NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
