The defect: ON CERTAIN SWEEPERS EQUIPPED WITH COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS (CNG), SWEEPING DEBRIS MAY BUILD UP IN FRONT OF THE REAR AXLE AND IN THE EXHAUST DISCHARGE PIPE. UNDER HEAVY SWEEPING CONDITIONS, THE CNG EXHAUST TEMPERATURES CAN EXCEED 800 DEGREES.
The risk: THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE COULD IGNITE THE DEBRIS. PERSONNEL NEAR THE STREET SWEEPER COULD BE INJURED OR PROPERTY DAMAGE COULD OCCUR.
The remedy: ELGIN WILL INSTALL A NEW EXHAUST SYSTEM IN THESE VEHICLES THAT WILL REDIRECT THE EXHAUST DISCHARGE AWAY FROM THE ELEVATOR SYSTEM AND DEBRIS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 1, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ELGIN AT 1-877-342-5374.

Safety recall

Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
