1983 Ferrari Mondial Recalls

Safety recall campaigns filed with NHTSA that cover this model year

Recalls apply to specific vehicles, not to every vehicle of a model year. Check your VIN with NHTSA or your manufacturer's dealer to confirm whether a recall affects your vehicle.

Recall campaignsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

Open investigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

Recall campaigns

4 campaigns cover this model year — what the defect is, what it could cause, and what the remedy is

SUSPENSION:MULTIPLE AXLE

Jun 12, 1986
422 units potentially affected
The defect: UNDER CERTAIN SPECIFIC LOAD CONDITIONS, SUCH AS ACCIDENTAL HIGH SPEED IMPACTS ON THE REAR SUSPENSION SYSTEM, THE REAR WHEEL BEARINGS AND HUB ASSEMBLIES COULD DETERIORATE. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: PROLONGED USE OF DETERIORATED WHEEL BEARINGS AND HUB ASSEMBLIES RESULTS IN REAR END NOISE AND VIBRATION. THIS COULD ULTIMATLY CAUSE IMPAIRED HANDLING AND POSSIBLE LOSS OF CONTROL, RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT.
The remedy: REPLACE BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT REAR HUB/HUB CARRIER ASSEMBLIES.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY

Dec 9, 1985
181 units potentially affected
The defect: THERE MAY BE INTERFERENCE BETWEEN THE FUEL TANK AND SURROUNDING PANELS CAUSING ABRASION OF THE FUEL TANK SURFACE. CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: ABRASION COULD AFFECT THE INTEGRITY OF THE FUEL TANK AND RESULT IN FUEL LEAKAGE AND A FIRE HAZARD.
The remedy: INSTALL PROTECTIVE POLYURETHANE CUSHIONS BETWEEN BODY PANELS AND FUEL TANK.

SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING

Dec 9, 1985
389 units potentially affected
The defect: THE FRONT WHEEL BEARING MAY DETERIORATE, CAUSING VIBRATION AND NOISE FROM THE FRONT SUSPENSION ASSEMBLY. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: CONTINUED USE OF THE CAR AFTER NOTICING VIBRATION AND NOISE COULD CAUSE HANDLING DIFFICULTY AND RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT.
The remedy: REPLACE PART OF BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLY.

STEERING: STEERING WHEEL/HANDLE BAR

Dec 9, 1985
345 units potentially affected
The defect: THE SPLINED COUPLING BETWEEN THE STEERING COLUMN AND STEERING BOX COULD DEVELOP INTERNAL CORROSION DUE TO ITS EXPOSED POSITION AND CHARACTERISTICS. CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: PROLONGED USE OF THE CAR COULD CAUSE DETERIORATION OF THE COUPLING, VIBRATIONS IN THE STEERING SYSTEM, AND HANDLING DIFFICULTY WHICH COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT.
The remedy: REPLACE THE STEERING PINION EXTENSION WITH A NEW PREGREASED PART INSTALLED WITH A NEW BOLT.

What a recall is

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
Safety investigation
NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
