2016 Ford F-150 Fuel system Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the fuel system system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Fuel system reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

My 2016 Ford F-150 (VIN [XXX]) experienced an intermittent failure involving the transmission range sensor system. While driving, the vehicle displayed a check engine light and a “See Service Manual” message. The truck became noticeably underpowered. When shifted into Reverse, the transmission engaged harshly and the PRNDL (gear position indicator) disappeared from the instrument cluster. The backup camera also became inoperative. After shutting the vehicle off, it would not restart. Electrical accessories and the instrument cluster remained functional, but the engine would not crank. After sitting for a period of time, the vehicle eventually restarted and the PRNDL display returned. The same failure occurred on three separate occasions within approximately 24 hours, including while arriving at a Ford dealership for service. The failure creates a safety concern because the vehicle can unexpectedly become unable to start, loses indication of the selected gear, and may experience transmission-related issues while being operated. The vehicle is currently unreliable for transportation and could leave occupants stranded. An independent repair facility scanned the vehicle and documented DTCs P0706 (Transmission Range Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance), P0707 (Transmission Range Sensor A Circuit Low), P1702 (Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Intermittent), and P1921 (Transmission Range Signal). The vehicle is included in Ford Safety Recall 26S28 involving 2015-2017 F-150 vehicles equipped with the 6R80 transmission. A Ford dealership inspected the vehicle and advised that the concern appears related to the transmission range sensor/lead frame issue associated with the pending recall. However, the dealership advised that a repair cannot currently be submitted because the recall remedy has not yet been activated. The vehicle had approximately 124,000 miles at the time of failure. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Both turbos, spark plugs, catalytic converters, O2 sensors. If turbos blow up while drive it will shoot vanes in the motor. Yes JD automotive replaced all the above mentioned parts. will include copy of the invoice, not the only ford owner that has had issues out of the ford twin turbos failing. not sure if dealer inspected turbos, but they replaced the spark plugs 3x in less then 3 months (lemon) and the throttle bottle. Didnt share this information with me when vehicle was purchased. Issue started with a P0430 codes which falsely say its a cat code. I used cataclean due to the low miles and would still get code every once in while. less the 2 years from purchasing it used had both turbos fail. not sure if it was a mis diagnosis from mclarty daniel in Bentonville Arkansas or if ford knowing made motors with bad turbos.

I was driving my 2016 Ford f150 in Ventura California on August 29th 2025 when my throttle began to accelerate on its own after taking my foot off the gas pedal. My truck sped up out of control, I almost lost control of the vehicle and crashed. Luckily I was able to gain control and get it into neutral and then into park. My trucks rpms raced so high it sounded as if the engine was going to explode. I put it into park and the rpms lowered to a normal level. While this was all happening a wrench icon popped up on my dash. Once the wrench icon came on I noticed my dash wasn’t telling me what gear I was in or if I was in park, neutral or drive. I pulled into the closest parking lot. I put it in park and every time I gave the truck gas the throttle would continue to accelerate on its own and would rev extremely high on its own. I also noticed as I was sitting it the parking lot at idol there is now a thumping sound/ jolt when selecting what gear to go into. I don’t know if this was caused from having to slam the car into neutral and then into park so I wouldn’t crash when the throttle accelerated. I shut my truck off and it wouldn’t turn back on. All of my electronics work but it doesn’t even want to try to start or turn over. I had to tow my truck home and it is now sitting in front of my house unusable. I have videos I can provide.

My F150 engine stalls while driving when I am at a1/4 tank or less in hot or cold weather in stop and go traffic, at a stop sign or red traffic signal. I am able to restart the engine after placing the transmission in neutral or park. I have reported this issue to my ford dealer, but they say there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. There is currently a recall (#25S75) for this issue in later model F150s, but my vehicle is not covered. The Ford hotline instructed me to report this issue to NHTSA.

I was going to pass someone and as I was speeding up the check engine light came on. I pulled over and there was nothing wrong with the truck. Months later there was a warning that came up on the dash it said something about shifting and i was to park the truck. I took it to a transmission shop, come to find out that the shifting sensor had went out. They cleared the check engine light and it came back on. Ran a diagnostic on it and it said there was like 8 different things that needs to be fixed. There was Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold, Air Distribution Damper Position Sensor- Circuit Short to Ground or Open, Bank 1 Air/Fuel Ration Imbalance, Sensor Circuit, Internal Control Module Torque Performance, Heater Control Circuit (Bank 1, Sensor 1). When I am at a certain speed the truck will vibrate (feels like you have ran over the rubber strips on the road), if I accelerate and the passing gear kicks in there is a strange sound coming from under the truck. I dontfell like this should be put off on me. I have had alot of people saying that they are having the same issues I am having.

While driving, the vehicle has been going into limp mode at varying speeds on the roadway or while pulling onto the road. The problem lies within the components of the electric throttle body. The system malfunctions and locks the throttle body closed, thus putting the truck into limp mode. Shutting the vehicle off, waiting, and restarting temporarily resolves this issue UNTIL the PCM detects a fault in the electrical components of the throttle body and sends the truck into limp mode. When this happens, it also triggers a warning message regarding hill start assist. This is an extreme safety issue as pulling onto the roadway or loosing power in traffic and not being able to pull off can lead to collisions especially around blind curves or in heavy traffic. There also isn’t always a location to safely pull off the roadway, potentially leaving the vehicle and its operator in the roadway, increasing the risk of collision and injury

2016 f150 3.5L eco boost V-6 was purchased recently from used dealership. Upon taking possession the vehicle would shut down while driving. I would need to get to the shoulder of road, put truck in park, turn off vehicle and then restart. It’s happened 20 times in last 30 days. I’ve taken to dealership 5x and they are unable to resolve, diagnose or offer any help. Online, many other owners have noted same issue. Doing 65 on fwy and truck suddenly dies is big deal! Ford does nothing. Error message on dash says something about stability track. When restarting engine, it turns over many times as if flooded but then starts.

Unknown, I was pulling into a parking spot, at Sam's Club, and lightly tap the gas petal for the turn and the truck lunched forward in the one carlink, and hit a concrete parking pole (Sam's club in Southgate Michigan has security cameras) it warped around the pole and bent the frame as if though it was 90 mph and a telephone pole.. I had taken it in twice under warranty for the gas pedal not working correctly, the warranty company would not allow a 3rd repair nor did Ford dealership take that warranty company. The airbags did not deploy, and I now have a T4 fractured vertebrae.

I was getting married and setting to go a getaway immediately after we wed. I got a tune up and go my vehicle read. After the tune up it the drive felt great. So me and my wife took to the highway, and as my vehicle began to accelerate the engine began jitter as I press on the gas peddle. The car would not go past 50 mph. As I kept my feet on the gas you can feel the whole car shaking, then the eco boost kicks in and it immediately accelerate at a high rate of speed and as attempt to control the speed by letting go of the gas. The vehicle shakes as it looses power and settles on 50 to 60 miles shaking until the eco boost kicks in. It was a two hour ride and I couldn't look back just pray. Through out the ride it was the same thing over and over again. My wife and I were in constant fear, because I felt due to the erupt increase in speed I was putting other motorist at risk. The engine light came on and a wrench symbol and tire symbol came on. The component or system that failed or malfunctioned involves the eco boost. It appears to be the same recall reference NHTSA # 24V-635 & Manufacturer: # 24S55. My vehicle presently has 78,000 miles on it and it should not be doing that. I have also looked at other problems with the 2016 Ford F-150 Ecoboost as being the web belt system and head gasket failure. However, whatever is the case anyone with this type of vehicle and experiencing the same thing is catastrophic the public safety at large and it cannot be ignored. Ford must correct this problem before someone end up dying as a result of this problem. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I pray this may help you properly investigate my experience. I can have my truck available for anyone from NHTSA to inspect. Presently there is no data regarding the problem with this particular vehicle.

The transmission 6R80 is absolutely horrible, a part called the lead frame is all over youtube on how to fix it at home. the transmission causes slam shifts, missed shifts, or nothing at all. 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th, and 4th to 5th. When slowing down again hard shifts back down again. local mechanics say they don't want to change transmission fluid as it could do more harm then good. I called my local ford dealership and was offered to bring it in where the test would show either a transmission fix or a full replacement which is absolutely crazy to me, Ford should be held liable for these mistakes because it should be fixed with a piece of Styrofoam over the sensors, and then transmission fluid changed. But ford knows for all of that and all of the 6R80 transmissions they've put out is an astronomical number. This is horrible that its happening to a very large majority of these transmissions and nothing from ford.

The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. While the contact's husband was driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact noticed the odor of fuel on the interior of the vehicle. The contact's husband parked the vehicle. The contact's husband performed an inspection of the vehicle and became aware that fuel was spraying underneath the vehicle onto the exhaust pipe. The contact's husband who is an independent mechanic, diagnosed the failure as a high-pressure fuel line fracture. The contact was informed that the fuel line needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.

My Engin light went on code was P0304 cylinder 4 misfire.I recently replaced #4 ignition coil. Using power balance test, confirmed cylinder #4 is misfiring but only on idle. Per TSB 19-2310 , suspect #4 direct fuel injector of leaking. The dealership will not help back up this problem. Need all 6 fuel injectors replaced to make my truck SAFE to drive.my truck has the 2.7L v 6 eco boost engine. A lot of these engines have this problem, Ford as of now does not have a recall but should. This problem needs fixed before someone gets hurt. This could cause a fire.

I have a 2016 Ford F-150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost engine with 92,019 miles. This morning (9/11/2024) as I headed to work, I pulled out to cross highway 54 and the truck suddenly lost power. It would only idle. As I tried pushing harder on the gas pedal, it would not come out of an idle and I barely made it to the center divide with multiple vehicles headed right at my drivers side going 65 - 70 mph. The check engine came on and stayed on. The truck was shaking and vibrating tremendously. I could not leave the truck there as it was blocking traffic in both directions. I was able to back up and cross back over the highway and pulled to the shoulder. I turned the truck off and started to make a call for AAA when I received a notification from my Bouncie. It threw a P2112 code throttle actuator “A” control system - stuck closed. After letting the truck sit for a couple minutes, I started it back up and was able to make it home.

It over 2 years ago my truck was stalling out on me while driving and they replaced the vehicle throttle body. The same thing jsut happened last week and I again had to replace the same part. There is a recall for this part on f150s but not my year. It seems unreasonable to have to pay for the same new part in just over 2 years. I was told I should clean it every 15k now which also seems unreasonable and a cost to me.

Truck idles rough and stalls at idle. Truck must be placed in park, restarted, and then placed in drive. This creates a very dangerous situation in start and stop traffic, starting and stopping at intersections, etc. I’m worried about the truck staling instead of paying attention to the surroundings. Based on my searches this is a very common problem that must be fixed before people are injured or possibly killed.

My truck keeps going into a limp mode where there is zero power even when pressing gas pedal. While in limp mode, engine won't rev up at all. In addition, the vehicle begins to show errors such as "Service AdvancetTrac", "Collision Warning not available", "Hill Start Assist nit available". From the research I have done, this appears to be a well-known throttle body issue documented by Ford. The question is why hasn't there been a recall. This is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS as the truck essentially becomes powerless on the road. Please advise.

When fueling the Ford F 150, it will not shut off almost all fuel handles and as a result gasoline spews out a couple feet past the fuel pump handle as well as spilling fuel all over the side of the truck. This poses a fire hazard as well as slipping and carcinogen issue. Also, the paint and tires are subjected to deterioration and the vehicle smells of fuel for some time afterwards. I can never completely fill the vehicle without putting my ear up to the truck fill tube. No matter how far back I jump, I always get fuel on my feet, shoes and clothing. I haven't had fuel get in my eyes yet, but it is just a matter of time. Maybe a fuel station has already blown up. I'm sure that won't bee long if it has not already happened.

While driving my 2016 F-150 in heavy traffic, the vehicle suddenly loses all forward power as if the transmission were in neutral. The engine is running and the tachometer indicates the RPM's are approximately 1,200, but it will not respond to pushing the gas pedal. The RPM's remain the same, regardless of how hard the pedal is pushed. Shifting the transmission to other forward gears does nothing, it still acts as though it is in neutral. A wrench symbol appears on the main screen, as well as a message that says "Hill Start Not Available". The *ONLY* way to fix the problem is to bring the vehicle to a complete stop, turn it off, wait a few seconds, and then start it again. It starts very roughly at first. After one or two attempts at this, the engine will reengage with the transmission and respond properly. It then drives normally for several days or a week. After considerable research, I found a TSB from Ford that indicates this is a known problem with their Electronic Throttle Body. The TSB number is 16-0139. It is extremely dangerous because it often happens at high speeds. It once happened to me on a narrow causeway, blocking all traffic while I came to a complete stop and restarted the truck. It also happened on a very busy highway. I was able to pull off to a narrow shoulder and restart the vehicle, but it was terrifying in extremely heavy traffic.

Engine Stalls (at low RPMs) mostly when stopping at traffic lights, not as bad if Im able to put in Park (it will still idle rough. but, not as likely to completely stall). I have noticed This is more likely after driving at higher speeds (70mph - 85mph) for prolonged periods of time (1hr - 6hrs). I bought the truck 4yrs ago, with 78k on it.

NOW, NOW WARNING LIGHT OR ANY INDICATION OF PROBLEM ON DASH. NO WARNING LAMPS PRIOR TO PROBLEM. SAFETY WAS AT RISK BECAUSE WITHOUT WARNING, PULLING OUT INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC AND LOSING THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE WITH TRAFFIC COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. LOOKING THIS PROBLEM UP IN AN ONLINE FORD F150 FORUM INDICATES THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM. WHY HAS THERE BEEN NO RECALL FOR THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY ENGINE FAILURE CIRCUMSTANCE?
