Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2018 Ford Fusion Energi, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Ranked by how many owner reports name each component category
- Electrical450.0%

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Ford Fusion energi battery failure. Dealership wouldn't inspect the battery and kept replacing the battery control module. The replacement part kept failing under warranty and then the dealership quoted me $20,000 for the hybrid battery. They have replaced the BCM twice and error code P0dc9 keeps appearing. The EV range drops to zero randomly or gains range while parked and not plugged in. Dealership doesn't know what's happening even after paying money for diagnostics.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Fusion Energi. The contact stated that the hold voltage battery had decreased to 13–15 miles on a full charge when previously averaging 22–23 miles. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was related to Customer Satisfaction Program: 24N19. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and transferred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.

I routinely have plugged in my PHEV, enjoying the quiet electric ride. I could complete a day's commute with the electric charge. However, the battery capacity was significantly reduced at about 50K miles. At about 73K miles, within a couple miles of starting to drive, the car would decelerate and go into 'limp mode', with a top speed of 35MPH. A warning signal of a wrench would appear, indicating a power train fault. While diagnostics at the dealer didn't detect a cause, an emissions test required by the State of Colorado found an 'unstable Hybrid Battery A voltage'. I replaced the spark plugs as recommended by the dealer, but that didn't address the problem. The diagnostics and repair cost about $1000.00

Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
I PULLED UP TO THE GARAGE DOOR STOPPING TO PRESS THE REMOTE BUTTON TO OPEN THE DOOR (AS I DO EVERY DAY). SUDDENLY THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD IN THE BUILDING DAMAGING THE DOOR POST AND THE FRONT OF THE CAR. WHEN I SAW THE BUILDING COMING CLOSER I HAD SLAMMED THE BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD.

Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHILE DRIVING AT 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE INFOTAINMENT SCREEN SYSTEM AND THE DASH CONSOLE DIALS ALL WENT COMPLETELY DARK. THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN WITH NO POWER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START UP AGAIN. HOW CAN A VEHICLE BE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING GO "DARK" AND SHUT DOWN AND CANNOT BE START UP AGAIN? MULTIPLE CARS (MUCH OLDER CARS) HAD TO SWERVE AROUND MY BRAND NEW 2018 FORD FUSION ENERGI PLUG IN. THE VEHICLE IS AT THE DEALER AND IT IS AWAITING DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND REPAIRS.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
