What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2011 Ford Mustang, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I HAVE HAD THIS RECALL FIXED LAST FEB. I HAVE CALLED THE FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS COMPLETED AND PRESTON SAYS THAT IT WAS COMPLETED ON 2/16/19 AT PRESTON FORD IN HERMITAGE AND THE INFORMATION HAS BEEN SUBMITTED AND CORRECT ON THE FORD WEBSITE.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the transmission, on occasion, did not shift into second and third gear. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a failed clutch pad. The contact was informed that the clutch pad needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure and did not assist. The contact was informed to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Mustang. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked the contact wife who was in the passenger heard a loud noise coming from the vehicle, when she noticed that the vehicle had shifted into driver and was rolling frontwards crashing into a boulder cause the vehicle to stop completely. The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the mechanic stated that there was no failure found and that the VIN was not under recall. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 90,000.
THE CLUTCH MAKES A CRACKING NOISE. WHEN I SHIFT BETWEEN 1ST AND 3RD IT CAN BE DIFFICULT AT TIMES DEPENDING ON THE TEMPERATURE. THE SYMPTOMS ARE NOT CONSISTENT. *KB
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power and failed to properly accelerate while depressing the accelerator pedal. After turning off and restarting the vehicle, the vehicle operated as needed. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The local dealer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 125,000.
VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN ONE YEAR SINCE IT BROKE DOWN LAST AND NOW I HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM. THE SECONDARY TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER HAS FAILED AND LEAD TO SECONDARY TIMING CHAIN FAILURE BROKEN ROCKER ARM AND MAYBE DAMAGE TO THE PISTON IT HAS BEEN PROBLEM AFTER PROBLEM THIS CAR IS A LEMON AND THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED I WAS DRIVING THROUGH AND INTERSECTION AND MY CAR STALLED LUCKILY IT STARTED ONCE MORE JUST LONG ENOUGH TO GET IT OFF THE BUSY ROAD. THERE WAS BOLTS ON THE VALVE COVER THAT'S WEREN'T EVEN DRILLED THROUGH THE PLASTIC VALVE COVER. THERE IS NO REASON A FAIRLY NEW MOTOR SHOULD HAVE MALFUNCTIONED LIKE THIS.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHILE DRIVING MY 2011 FORD MUSTANG (WITH A V6 ENGINE AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) AT 40MPH ON A LOCAL STREET, I EXPERIENCED THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY LOSING POWER AND A FAULT LIGHT IN THE FORM OF A WRENCH APPEARING ON THE DASHBOARD. THE ENGINE SPEED DROPPED DOWN TO IDLE AND DID NOT RESPOND TO ANY GAS PEDAL OPERATION. THE CARS ENGINE REMAINED RUNNING, HOWEVER, THE ENGINE RAN ROUGHLY AS EVIDENCE OF IT SHAKING THE ENTIRE CAR. THE INCIDENT PLACED MYSELF AND OTHER DRIVERS AROUND ME IN DANGER, AS I HAD TO MOVE QUICKLY TO GET MY VEHICLE OUT OF THE MOVING TRAFFIC AND INTO A SAFE PLACE OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.
2011 FORD MUSTANG 3.7L V6 CONVERTIBLE, PREMIUM, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION THROTTLE BODY FAILURE (PART # AT4Z-9E926-B) WHILE DRIVING, THE CAR SUDDENLY DECELERATES, THE DASHBOARD 'WRENCH LIGHT' COMES ON, THE FRONT END OF THE CAR RUMBLES AND SHAKES, AND THE CAR WILL NOT ACCELERATE, FORCING ME TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. THIS HAPPENS AT MODERATE SPEED ON LOCAL ROADS AND AT HIGHWAY SPEED. IF I PULL OFF THE ROAD, TURN THE CAR OFF, WAIT A FEW MINUTES, AND THEN RESTART, IT USUALLY RUNS NORMALLY. ON ONE OCCASION, IT DID NOT. IT DECELERATED AND THEN STALLED COMPLETELY IN THE MIDDLE OF A FOUR WAY INTERSECTION WHILE I WAS ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP AFTER BEING TOLD THERE 'WAS NO CODE,' SO THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. I COASTED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, PULLED OVER, TURNED THE CAR OFF AND THEN RESTARTED IT, AFTER WHICH IT RAN FOR ABOUT A MINUTE, SHOOK VIOLENTLY, AND THEN STALLED. EVERY INDICATOR ON THE DASHBOARD WAS ILLUMINATED. IT SEEMED AS IF THE CAR WAS CHOKING. I REPEATED THIS OVER AND OVER, CREEPING DOWN THE SHOULDER, BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. IN MY CASE, THIS PART HAS BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS, MOST RECENTLY ON OCT 29, 2019. ACCORDING TO MY SERVICE RECORDS, PART # AT4Z-9E926-B WAS USED FOR EACH REPLACEMENT. APPARENTLY, FORD REPLACES A DEFECTIVE PART WITH ANOTHER DEFECTIVE PART. THIS PART SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPLACED WITH A DIFFERENT OR IMPROVED PART THAT WILL FIX THE PROBLEM ONCE AND FOR ALL. 2015: CODE P2135, REPLACED THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY 2016: SENT AWAY FROM DEALERSHIP, NO FAULT CODES, UNABLE TO VERIFY 2016: RETURNED TO DEALERSHIP SHORTLY AFTER I WAS SENT AWAY; CODE P0315, REPLACED THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY 2016: CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM 16B23, REIMBURSED FOR THROTTLE BODY REPLACEMENT 2019: NO FAULT CODE NOTED ON SERVICE PAPERWORK, REPLACED THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
Leaking fumes from plastic fuel tank. Micro cracks on top and seam. Had to replace the fuel tank and the sender and fuel pump inserts because of cracks.
THE CAR WILL "SHUT DOWN" (WRENCH ERROR LIGHT) AT ANY TIME, ANYWHERE, ANY SPEED. VERY DANGEROUS!!! ERROR CODE P2111 THROTTLE BODY ACTUATOR STUCK OPEN. I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS POSTS ON THIS. FORD REALLY NEEDS TO FIX THIS!!! I WILL NO LONGER LET MY CHILD DRIVE THIS CAR. SO UNSAFE!! IT HAPPENED TO ME SEVERAL TIMES A DAY PROBABLY THREE TIMES IN THE LAST WEEK. THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, HIGHWAY, CITY, STRAIGHT, TURNS, FAST, SLOW.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
This is a common issue with these S197 Mustangs. The steering position sensor failed. While driving, this can cause the "Service Advancetrac" warning to come on, meanwhile the wheels spin at different speeds as the car attempts to correct a low traction scenario that isn't happening, causing the driver to crash. This caused me to temporarily lose control of my vehicle. Luckily I didn't hit anything. The sensor itself can be replaced for $20-$40, but Ford has sealed it inside the EPAS system, making it non-servicable and escalating the repair cost to over $1300.
Steering angle sensor has malfunctioned, sometimes when i turn the traction and stability control completely turns off, abs randomly activates while im driving.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2011 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that while attempting to service the vehicle, it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a private sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 174,000 and at the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage was 298,000.
ELECTRIC SEAT WON'T MOVE. HAVE READ COUNTLESS OTHERS HAVING SAME PROBLEM ONLINE. THE ISSUE IS A FACTORY DEFECT. MAGNETS INSIDE ELECTRIC MOTOR OF POWER SEATS ARE PUT IN PLACE WITH GLUE THAT COMES UNDONE EASILY INSIDE MOTOR CAUSING IT TO BE UNABLE TO MOVE. DEALERSHIPS AND SHOPS COST TO REPLACE IS INSANE, NEVER BELOW $1000. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN AS I MOVED MY SEAT FAR BACK WHILE RELAXING BEFORE WORK AND WHEN I GOT OFF LATER THE SEAT WOULD NOT MOVE. FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THESE DEFECTIVE PARTS IMMEDIATELY.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Mustang. The contact stated while driving at various speeds and depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle failed to respond. The message "Service Auto Advancetrac" was displayed. The contact stated that she continued to depress the brake pedal until the vehicle responded. The contact stated that there was a significant stopping distance delay. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring more frequently while driving, and the vehicle was sliding while stopping, nearly causing a crash. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer however, the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE LAST TWO MUSTANGS I PURCHASED (BOTH WERE NEW CARS) DEVELOPED ELECTRICAL ISSUES AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. MY CURRENT 2011 MUSTANG HAS HAD NUMEROUS ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITHIN THE CABIN OF THE CAR. IN ADDITION TO THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES, THE HOOD DEVELOPED PROBLEMS WITH THE PAINT SUCH AS BUBBLING, PEELING AND RUSTING. MY FRUSTRATION WITH FORD GROWS MORE INTENSE EACH TIME THE AIR-CONDITIONER, ALONG WITH NUMEROUS OTHER DEVICES ASSOCIATED WITH THE DASHBOARD, QUITS OPERATING AND THE WINDOWS WILL NOT FUNCTION. I OFTEN FIND MYSELF ENCOUNTERING THIS ISSUE ON A NINETY PLUS DEGREE DAY. THE ELECTRICAL ISSUE CAN OCCUR WHEN MOVING OR AT A COMPLETE STOP. THERE IS NO PATTERN TO WHEN IT HAPPENS, OR WHICH ELECTRICAL ITEMS WILL QUIT FUNCTIONING. IT DOES HAPPEN MORE OFTEN WITH WARMER TEMPERATURES AND THE AIR-CONDITIONER IS IN USE. HOWEVER, IT ALSO OCCURS WHEN THE AIR-CONDITIONER IS NOT IN USE.
I HAVE A 2011 MUSTANG THAT I KEEP COVERED AND CLEAN ALWAYS. THIS MONTH THE PAINT ON THE FRONT EDGE OF THE HOOD STARTED BUBBLING. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM FOR YEARS AND HAVE DONE NOTHING AND WOULD DO NOTHING TO FIX IT. THEY TOLD ME TO CALL FORD. I CALLED FORD AND THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WRITE A LETTER OF COMPLAINT TO FORD. NOTHING IS RESOLVED. IF THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT ON THIS MATTER, PLEASE ADD MY NAME TO THE LIST OF CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE BEEN WRONGED. I HAVE ALWAYS OWNED FORDS BUT WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER IF THEY DO NOT MAKE THIS RIGHT.
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.

THE NON-ADJUSTABLE HEADREST PUSHES MY HEAD TOO FAR FORWARD AND DOWN. THIS CAUSES PAIN IN MY NECK AND SPINE.

MIKE RICKENBACK Ford dealership service shop declined me a tire rotation because they assessed my OEM lug nuts to be swollen and in need of replacement. Unbeknownst to me this is a well documented safety hazard.

Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
I AM HAVING MAJOR ELECTRICAL ISSUES WHICH FORD WILL NOT ADDRESS. SOMETIMES THIS IS INTERMITTENT, SOMETIMES IT IS CONSTANT. HERE IS WHAT HAPPENS: I GET A BARRAGE OF ERRORS ON THE DASH, THE RADIO AND AIR CONDITIONER WILL CYCLE ON AND OFF MULTIPLE TIMES (SOMETIMES WILL REMAIN OFF); REAR BRAKE LIGHTS STOP WORKING, REAR TURN SIGNAL STOPS WORKING. IT DOES THIS RANDOMLY, SOMETIMES FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD. I WORRY THAT SOMEONE MAY NOT CHECK THE BRAKE LIGHTS OR TURN SIGNAL AND BE SEVERELY INJURED OR KILLED IN AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE ALERTED FORD ABOUT THIS AND BELIEVE THAT IT FELL ON DEAF EARS. THE CAR CAN BE IN MOTION, STATIONARY, CITY, HIGHWAY, RAIN, SNOW, SLEET, OR SUN, DRIVEN AGGRESSIVELY OR GENTLY. NOTHING SEEMS TO TRIGGER THE PROBLEM, IT JUST HAPPENS. THE CAR HAS BEEN GARAGED A LARGE PART OF ITS LIFE.
REAR WINDOW EXPLODED WHEN TURNED ON REAR DEFROST. SHORTLY AFTER TURNING ON REAR DEFROST, HEARD LOUD POP AND MIDDLE OF REAR WINDOW BEGAN TO SHATTER IN SPIDER WEB DESIGN WHICH SPREAD AND ENTIRE WINDOW EXPLODED. DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 65 MPH. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM. THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A TRIGGER IN REGARD TO RAIN, HOT, OR COLD WEATHER CONDITIONS OR HOW IT IS BEING DRIVEN. I HAVE HAD A FORD DEALERSHIP WORK ON THIS TO NO AVAIL. I WILL START WITH THE SAFETY ASPECT THAT IS AFFECTED. IT WILL DO ALL OF THESE THINGS AT ONCE AND THEN SLOWLY COME BACK ONLINE, SOMETIMES THE ERRORS DO NOT CORRECT THEMSELVES. 1. NO BRAKE LIGHTS 2. NO REAR TURN SIGNAL 3. NO HEAT/AIR (IT WILL TURN ON AND OFF) - WHICH IS BAD IN INCLEMENT WEATHER FOR OLD PEOPLE 4. BRAKE LIGHT, TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT, TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR, SERVICE ENGINE, ALL HAVE ERRORS. 5. RADIO WILL TURN ON AND OFF. IT WILL CYCLE THROUGH THESE THINGS FAILING, THEY MAY FAIL MULTIPLE TIMES PER MINUTE OR JUST STAY IN FAIL MODE, OR THEY MAY JUST CORRECT THEMSELVES. THIS STARTED TO HAPPEN INFREQUENTLY AND SLOWLY STEPPED UP TO VERY FREQUENTLY. I WILL ATTACH A LINK TO A YOUTUBE VIDEO THAT WILL SHOW MY CAR. HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=-1ZQR4WBVQW

THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER SEAT BELT IS STUCK AND WILL NOT RELEASE TO ALLOW BUCKLING. I CONTACTED THE LAKELAND FORD DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE IT, WITHOUT ME PAYING $505, EVEN THOUGH THEY KNEW IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE AND OFFERED A RENTAL CAR WHILE THE REPAIR WOULD BE COMPLETED.
I HAVE BEEN HAVING MORE AND MORE TROUBLE WITH BEING ABLE TO UNBUCKLE MY SEATBELT FROM THE BELT BUCKLE AFTER PARKING AND ATTEMPTING TO GET OUT, IT KEEPS GETTING STUCK AND DOESN'T RELEASE LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO. I HAVE NEVER SPILLED ANYTHING ON IT, OR INSIDE THE BELT BUCKLE LOCKING MECHANISM. MY VEHICLE IS A 2011 FORD MUSTANG GT.

THIS CAR HAS 26,600 MILES ON IT AND THE PIRELLI P ZERO NERO ALL SEASON RADIAL TIRES ARE SEPARATING BETWEEN THE TREADS. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON ALL FOUR TIRES. I FEAR FOR MY SAFETY THAT THESE TIRES WILL BLOW OUT. I ASKED THE SALESMAN THAT SOLD ME THE CAR AND HE WAS CLUELESS AND DID NOT OFFER ANY HELP. PLEASE HELP. THE TIRES SAY THEY WERE MADE IN BRAZIL AND SHOW THIS - P 235/50 ZR1897W. *TR
