Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY:CABLES

Apr 26, 2007
52,240 units potentially affected
The defect: CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES WERE BUILT WITH A CONDITION THAT PERMITS THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE TO CONTACT A WELD BEAD ON THE OIL TANK. THIS MAY CAUSE THE WELD BEAD TO ABRADE THROUGH THE INSULATION ON THE CABLE AND CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT FROM THE BATTERY THROUGH THE OIL TANK AND OIL LINES.
The risk: THIS COULD LEAD TO AN OIL LEAK AND/OR POSSIBLE FIRE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH TO THE RIDER.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A BATTERY CADDY THAT WILL PROTECT THE CABLE AND ENSURE PROPER CABLE ROUTING. THIS RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 4, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HARLEY-DAVIDSON AT 1-414-342-4080.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HARLEY DAVIDSON FLSTF. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FRONT AND REAR TIRES WOULD SCRAPE AGAINST THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE SINCE THE TIRE LOST TREAD. THE TIRE FAILURE ALSO CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY WHILE DRIVING. THE TIRES WERE REPLACED NUMEROUS TIMES, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 6,300 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 17,032.

WHEN LOOSING MY GRIP ON THE HANDLE BAR, AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE FRONT END WOBBLES. IF I TAKE ONE HAND OFF THE GRIP AT A STEADY SPEED THE FRONT END WOBBLES MORE. I ALSO NOTICE THE WOBBLE IS WORSE ON DECELERATION. I CAN FEEL THE FRONT END AT 30 - 55 MPH AND THE LONGER I LET LOOSE MY GRIP THE QUICKER AND MORE DRASTIC THE WOBBLE BECOMES. I HAVE CHECKED THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS AND THE STEERING HEAD BEARINGS ARE TIGHT. I HAVE ALSO REPLACED THE FRONT TIRE WITH ANOTHER DUNLOP TIRE. THE WOBBLE ISN'T VERY NOTICEABLE WITH BOTH HANDS TIGHTLY ON THE HANDLE BAR GRIPS.

2007 HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTOR COMPANY HARLEY DAVIDSON FLSTF ON MY 2007 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FATBOY, THE FRONT AXLE TILTS/LEANS TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BIKE. THIS HAS DONE TWO THINGS. FIRST, IT HAS REDUCED THE AMOUNT OF TREAD THAT IS AVAILABLE FOR MAKING RIGHT HAND TURNS. SECONDLY, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY IT IS WEARING ONLY ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TIRE. THE TIRE WEAR TO ONE SIDE COMBINED WITH LESS TREAD AVAILABLE DUE TO THIS FLAWED DESIGN HAS PRESENTED A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH REGARD TO GRIP GOING AROUND CORNERS. THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED IN 2008 AND 2009 BUT HARLEY HAS YET TO FIX THE 2007 BIKES. IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMETHING FATAL HAPPENS BECAUSE OF THIS DESIGN FLAW. *TR

ON MY 2007 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FATBOY, THE FRONT AXLE TILTS/LEANS TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BIKE. IT FIRST BEGAN WITH A MINOR CRASH THAT INVOLVED MYSELF, THIS BIKE, AND THE PAVEMENT. A CAR PULLED INTO MY INTENDED PATH OF TRAVEL. I HIT BOTH BRAKES AND SUDDENLY MY FRONT TIRE LOCKED UP AND KICKED MY BARS TO THE RIGHT. NEXT THING I KNOW IS THAT IM ON THE GROUND WITH MY BIKE. I THOUGHT IT WAS UNFORTUNATE LUCK AT THE TIME BUT SEEING THE WEAR OF MY TIRE IN THE FRONT, IT CANT BE A COINCIDENCE. ADDITIONALLY IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT MY BIKE WAS PRODUCED IN JULY OF 2006 AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 2007 MODEL PRODUCTION RUN. TO MY KNOWLEDGE, WHAT EVER ISSUE THAT CAUSED HARLEY-DAVIDSON TO ENGINEER MY MOTORCYCLE YEAR MODEL WITH EXTREME AMOUNTS OF CAMBER IN THE FRONT STEERING AXLE WAS RESOLVED WITH EITHER THE 2008 OR 2009 MODEL YEAR. THE FACT THAT THE CURRENT MODEL YEAR OF THIS MOTORCYCLE HAS HAD THIS FRONT AXLE ISSUE CORRECTED IS ABOUT AS LOUD A STATEMENT AS ANY THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THIS FIRST YEAR ISSUE OF THE SECOND GENERATION OF THE FATBOY MODEL. SO FAR, THE PARTS THAT WERE REPLACED TO TRY AND CORRECT THIS ISSUE WERE THE FRONT AXLE BEARINGS AS WELL AS READJUSTING THE STEERING NECK BEARINGS. HOWEVER THIS WILL NOT FIX AN ISSUE THAT HAS BEEN PHYSICALLY MACHINED INTO THE FRONT FORK ASSEMBLY. THE MOUNTING BOSSES FOR THE FRONT FENDER ARE THICKER ON THE LEFT SIDE THAN THE RIGHT. NO AMOUNT OF ADJUSTING OR PARTS WILL CHANGE THIS INTENTIONALLY ENGINEERED BANDAID! THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE THAT SO FAR HAS GENERATED NO RESPONSE FROM HARLEY DAVIDSON OTHER THAN A REFERENCE NUMBER REQUEST TO TAKE IT TO A DEALER. *TR

MY 2007 HARLEYDAVIDSON FLSTF (FAT BOY) WAS ENGINEERED WITH A DEFECT (FRONT WHEEL IS DESIGNED 3/4" OFF CENTER BETWEEN THE FORK TUBES) WHICH LEAVES THE MOTORCYCLE PRONE TO "HIGH SPEED WOBBLE" AND TO DRIFT OFF CENTER AT MODERATE SPEEDS. A HIGH SPEED WOBBLE CAN BE DEADLY ON A MOTORCYCLE. I ALMOST CRASHED. *TR

Manufacturer communications

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

M1684

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

SERVICE BULLETIN M1684: MARKET SPECIFIC BATTERY INTRODUCTION. PURPOSE: Initial Release. This bulletin informs dealers of the availability of new batteries for new Original Equipment (OE) vehicle production and in the Parts and Accessories (P&A) catalog. Availability of the new Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries will vary by market and will be transitioning over the next few months. NOTE: The ring terminal screws are not compatible between Leoch and East Penn batteries. The new batteries will include new ring terminal screws, which must be used. The ring terminal screws from the old battery need to be discarded.

M1317

ENGINE; FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM; POWER TRAIN; VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

SERVICE BULLETIN M1650: MILWAUKEE EIGHT AND TWIN CAM CAMSHAFT DRIVE GEAR RETENTION KIT CHANGES. PURPOSE: This bulletin informs dealers that changes have been made to the Camshaft Drive Gear Retention Kit and service proceduresfor the Milwaukee-Eight and Twin Cam applications. In an effort to increase the clamp load of the camshaft drive sprocket bolted joint and prevent the drive bolt from loosening in high lift camshaft applications, the following changes have been made: a. The camshaft drive bolt final torque has been increased to 40 ft-lbs (54 N·m) for all Milwaukee-Eight and certain Twin Cams models. See Vehicles Affected. This increase in torque will make the bolt a one time use application. Never re-use a camshaft drive bolt for service after tightening to the increased specification. See service manual for updated procedure. b. A new camshaft drive gear retention kit (Part No. 91800088) has been created. This new kit is compatible with all Milwaukee-Eight and Twin Cam engines using Parts and Accessories (P&A) camshaft and Original Equipment (OE) camshaft applications. See Instruction sheet for specific fitment on Twin Cam OE camshaft applications. The new kit utilizes friction washers to prevent unwanted rotation of components in the drive sprocket bolted joint under stress. The use of liquid threadlocker on the threads of the bolt and pre-lube to the head of the bolt flange and outside of the washer help the bolt reach full stretch when tightening. NOTE: Engines produced at all Harley-Davidson Motor Company (HDMC) plants will not come with the new kits installed. They will continue to be produced with (Part No. 25566-06).
