1999 Harley-Davidson Fxd Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 1999 Harley-Davidson Fxd, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

CAM BEARINGS FAILED WHILE RIDING MOTORCYCLE...THIS ISSUE IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM WITH 1999-2000 HD TWIN-CAM ENGINES..THIS IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE..THE FAILURE OCCURED WHILE ON THE ROAD AND I JUST MADE IT HOME BEFORE THE ENGINE FROZE. *AK

THIS IS A PREVENTIVE REPORT !!! I AM REPORTING THIS FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHER HARLEY OWNERS OF THIS YEAR ENGINE. I WISH TO HAVE HARLEY RECALL THE BIKES RATHER THEN ISSUE A 5 YR / 50,000 EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE BEARING. IT DID NOT HAPPEN TO MY BIKE YET. BUT REPORTS IN MAGAZINE AND ON THE WEB INDICATE THAT CAM BEARING FAILURES ON CERTAIN 1999-2000 HARELY ENGINES ARE OCCURING. THE WEB INTEFACE HERE WOULD NOT LET ME FILE UNLESS I PUT NUMBERS IN. SO, I PUT IN NUMBERS IN IN ORDER TO GET A MESSAGE TO YOU. AGAIN IT DID NOT FAIL ON MY PARTICULAR ENGINE. I SPEAK FOR I DON'T KNOW THE EXACT NUMBERS OF BIKES THAT HAVE FAILED ACCORDING TO MAGAZINE ARTICLES AND THE WEB, AND EVEN HARLEY HAS FINALLY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY BUT I FEEL THAT IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. I DO NOT INTEND TO FILE THIS AS A FALSE CLAIM ON MY BIKE. BUT IT'S A CONCERN FOR ME AND IN THE PRESS, AND HARLEY HAS RECOGNIZED A PROBLEM. IS THERE A WAY TO HAVE THEM RECALL THE BIKES? RATHER THEN AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE MILEAGE I STATED IS THE CORRECT MILEAGE; 9,200. AND FAILURE SHOULD BE 0 SO ONCE AGAIN THERE WAS NO FAILURE, BUT I WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION AND POSSIBLY A RECALL. THE $1,000 DOLLAR DAMAGE IS A CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE IN THE EVENT OF ACTUAL FAILURE. I HOPE THIS SAVE SOME PEOPLE SOME TROUBLE, AND GETS HARLEY TO ISSUE A RECALL INSTEAD OF WARRANTY EXTENSION. WE OWNERS PAID TOO MUCH FOR OUR BIKES AND DON'T NEED FAILURES THAT COULD BE PREVENTED RATHER THEN, "WHAT IF" OR " IT MIGHT FAIL." I SEE IT AS A SAFETY ISSUE. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS INFORMATION.*AK

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
