The defect: HARLEY DAVIDSON IS RECALLING 11,005 FLSTSB, FXSTSSE2, AND FXSTSSE3 MY 2008 AND 2009 MOTORCYCLES. THE ACORN STUD AT THE BRAKE REACTION LINK MAY FALL OUT DURING USE.
The risk: IF THIS OCCURS, THE FRONT BRAKE AND FENDER ASSEMBLY WOULD NO LONGER BE ADEQUATELY RETAINED. THIS CONDITION COULD LEAD TO A CRASH AND POTENTIAL INJURY TO OR DEATH OF THE RIDER.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING ACORN STUD WITH A NEW ACORN STUD AND RETAINING CLIP. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HARLEY DAVIDSON AT 1-414-343-4056.

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
