The defect: HME, Inc. (HME) is recalling certain model year 2000-2006 1871 emergency vehicles manufactured January 1, 2000, to March 15, 2006. The mechanical springs used to return the accelerator pedal to idle after the driver lifts their foot off the pedal may break.
The risk: If the springs break, the pedal may not return to idle once the driver lifts their foot off the pedal. This unintended acceleration increases the risk of a crash.
The remedy: HME has notified owners, and dealers will replace the affected pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began on November 14, 2014. Owners may contact HME customer service at 1-616-261-3626.

Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
