The defect: HME, Inc. (HME) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Type-6 Wildland trucks manufactured January 2, 2015, to December 1, 2016. The Certification label on the affected vehicles may incorrectly list the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) as 15,876 kilograms instead of the correct GVWR of 8,845 kg. (The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 19,500 lbs is listed correctly on the label.) As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification."
The risk: If there is an incorrect weight rating on the label, the operator may overload the vehicle, possibly resulting in a loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy: HME will mail a corrected certification label to owners free of charge. The recall began on February 6, 2017. Owners may contact HME customer service at 1-616-534-1463.

Safety investigation
NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
