What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2014 Honda Accord, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The VSA module failed, causing 5 warning lights to illuminate. This module controls ABS, traction control, and power steering. All of these systems involve the safe operation of the vehicle. The module failed due to a flawed design; the module contains 20-30 very fine connecting wires that frequently break due to vibration and temperature changes. VBS module failures are extremely common on 2008-20017 Honda Accords. Honda charges up to $4,000 to repair their flawed design to return the car to a safe operating condition. It is unconscionable that the consumer should have to pay such an expense to repair their mistake or to drive the car as is, and risk a catastrophic failure. A recall for these modules should be declared to protect the public from accident and injury.
1. What component or system failed? The ABS/VSA Modulator Control Unit (also known as the ABS pump or module). This system is responsible for Anti-lock Braking and Vehicle Stability Assist. 2. How was safety put at risk? The failure often results in the complete loss of Anti-lock Braking (ABS) and Stability Control (VSA). Increased Stopping Distance: In emergency braking situations, the wheels can lock up, leading to skidding and significantly longer distances to stop. Loss of Steering Control: Without VSA, the vehicle is prone to "plowing" (understeer) or spinning out (oversteer) during evasive maneuvers or on slippery surfaces (rain, snow, gravel). Brake Pedal Issues: Some owners report a "hard" or "unresponsive" brake pedal during the moment of failure, which causes a delay in braking response. This is a widely confirmed issue for 9th Gen Accords. Dealer Diagnosis: Most owners have this confirmed by a dealer through Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Common codes include 121-11 (VSA Solenoid Malfunction) or 81-20 (Acceleration Sensor Malfunction). Service Centers: Independent shops frequently see this issue and often recommend third-party rebuild services (like Module Master or UpFix) because the OEM replacement part from Honda is expensive ($1,500–$2,500) and frequently on backorder. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected? Manufacturer: While Honda has not issued a widespread safety recall for the 9th Gen module specifically (unlike the 2023 "Brake Hold" recall), many individual units have been inspected by dealer technicians. 5. Were there warning symptoms? The symptoms usually appear suddenly and without prior warning, often referred to as a "Christmas Tree" dash. Warning Lamps: The ABS, VSA (triangle with exclamation), Traction Control, and sometimes the Electric Power Steering (EPS) and TPMS lights all illuminate simultaneously.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Engine vibrating at stop light and fcw and ldw failed
While driving the car at approx 45mph on a busy roadway the vehicle suddenly accelerated heavily I tried applying the breaks but the pedal did not go down and had no affect of slowing the vehicle. I was forced to swerve around several vehicles to avoid a collision then just as suddenly the car returned to normal operation. The duration on the incident was approx 5 to 10 seconds. Very dangerous and very scary.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
2014 Honda Accord Hybrid experienced a sudden, complete loss of electric power steering assist immediately upon vehicle startup, illuminating the EPS dash warning light. The steering became extremely heavy and physically difficult to turn, rendering the vehicle unsafe to operate on public roads. An onboard diagnostic check retrieved a hard Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 53, which explicitly indicates an EPS Torque Sensor failure. Honda is fully aware of this defect and issued Service Bulletin 15-056 (Sep. 2018), which extends the EPS warranty to 13 years for this exact year and model. However, when checking my vehicle's 17-digit VIN, Honda's database excludes my car from the coverage range. This vehicle is suffering from the identical manufacturing defect and component failure outlined in Bulletin 15-056, but I am locked out of the safety repair solely due to an arbitrary VIN database boundary. I am filing this report because the underlying safety defect clearly extends beyond Honda's designated VIN cut-off range.

Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
Engine vibrating at stop light and fcw and ldw failed
the LDW, FCW, power steering, traction control, abs, steering keep faulting out. I am being told the issue is with the abs module. all the safety systems shut off with a warning message. these are major safety systems to have shut down by a single module.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
The ABS module is designed to fail after an extended period of time, leaving the owner to drive in dangerous conditions unless they pay thousands of dollars for the necessary repairs. This is essentially extortion, and the owners need to be held accountable. Our society runs the risk of being ran by parasitic, profit-driven, morally bankrupt individuals unless the issue is resolved appropriately. Thank you!

Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
The driver front left driveshaft inboard joint has started making noise when putting the car into drive, reverse, and taking off from a stop. The part is currently installed in the car and is not available for inspection. It has been inspected by an OEM dealership and confirmed to have play in the driveshaft. It has not been inspected by anyone else. Upon research, I found NHTSA recall 20V769000 that concerns this exact issue. The inboard and outboard joints are rusting and is allowing moisture to get inside of the joint. My VIN did have the open recall in 2021. The vehicle was inspected by an OEM dealer in March, 2021 for a clicking noise that I could not replicate at the time. The dealer confirmed that the recall inspection they did in March, 2021 was inspected, but the driveshafts were not replaced. The noise is now consistent and can be replicated.
Merging from a stop into traffic and suddenly a loud bang from under car and unable to accelerate. Able to move to shoulder while coasting. Failure was found to be the passenger side driveshaft. The CVT version of my car has an open recall, but mine is a manual. Seems like an attempt to carve out part of the recall to save a buck by Honda.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 Honda Accord. The contact stated that while driving at 59 MPH, another vehicle ahead of the vehicle in front of hers unexpectedly stopped, causing a three-vehicle rear-ended collision. The contact depressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle failed to stop. The front driver's side air bag deployed, but the side air bags did not deploy. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact did not sustain any injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a vehicle lot but was not deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 153,389.
I had a accident with the car and none of the airbags deployed and my son is severely injured in neck and shoulder. Its not yet inspected that is the airbag is faulty or not. No warning signs on dashboard.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
My car had extended crank, shaking/jerking while driving, engine failed and cut off in traffic. Tried to restart extended crank, still shaking/jerking while driving, sparking in the engine and engine failed and cut off in traffic. I was terrified didn't know if the car was going to be on fire when I heard the spark in the engine on the highway. Not only did this failure of the part put myself in danger but others on the road in danger as well. Other drivers was trying to get around me without causing an accident especially when my car was shaking/jerking. I had my car towed to the Honda dealership service center. The technician called and told me my fuel pump had failed.
The contact owns a 2014 Honda Accord. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle shut off unexpectedly with several warning lights displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and was diagnosed with a defective fuel pump. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure, but offered no assistance. The contact was given a case number. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); which the contact associated with the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 158,000.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
Excessive rusting that causes structural safety issues.
Paint peeling by the rear window
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
I am reporting that there are three things that needs to be addressed on the 2014 Honda Accord. 1. The drivers side seat, deflates and it consistantly has to be pumped back up while driving. 2. I've had to purchase (4) new car batteries for this 2014 Honda Accord that I own since I purchased it in 2016. That's unacceptable especially when there has been a recalled by Honda, on the 2016, for a battery senior issue? 3 The brakes on my 2014 Honda Accord car is most dangerous. When the brake is engaged and pressed hard, the brake fills with air and barely stops the car. I replaced the pad and rototes and it did not change a thing. Please have someone to check these things as well. I. The other Honda Accords are having issues with a Battery Senior then I am sure it's something in this 2014 that is killing my battery. The seat should not be deflating either and the brakes should not be barley stopping, when that is most important.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HONDA ACCORD. THE CONTACT STATED ALL THE DOORS FAILED TO UNLOCK WITH THE KEY OR THE REMOTE. ADDITIONALLY, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE PASSENGER'S SIDE DOOR OPENED INADVERTENTLY. THE DOOR AJAR WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SONS HONDA PARTS (105 SONS DR, MCDONOUGH, GA 30253, (678)572-1011) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE ACTUATOR NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 97,253.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact stated that while driving on the highway, a loud noise was heard. The vehicle's sunroof had shattered with glass getting on the contact as well as in the vehicle. The dealer was contacted but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.
Windshield wiper motor has failed at approximately 26k miles. I own a 1997 chevy k1500 with 217k miles and the windshield wiper motor has never been replaced and still works. For my Honda to have this low of mileage and have this failure rate, I'm unsure of how to repair. Cannot find an aftermarket part at any of the local parts stores and am unsure of using factory remanufactured because of the failure rate being so soon, I don't trust the remanufactured and they never have good warranties and generally high in price from Honda.
Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 Honda Accord. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 MPH, the Lane Departure and Forward Collision Avoidance warning lights illuminated, and the traction control warning light intermittently illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
I am writing to report a persistent and dangerous safety defect in my 2014 Honda Accord involving the VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) / ABS / ABS modulator / ABS ECU system. The ABS, VSA, and other warning lights have been on for years, first noticing around 60-70,000 miles indicating an ongoing fault in the system. The dealer has diagnosed a bad ABS/VSA modulator and/or ECU and stated this is a common issue and that often this part is on backorder. Most recently, while turning the car, the system locked or mis applied the brakes, causing the car to lose control and spin out. Luckily I did not crash as the car behind me was at a safe distance, but I ended up on the side of the highway in a dangerous situation. The Center for Auto Safety shows multiple complaints for 2014 Accord, including: ABS, VSA, traction control, stability control failures; owners say they were told a VSA modulator needs replacing Owners report DTC codes like 81‑19 (“yaw rate sensor internal circuit malfunction”) and 81‑20 (ABS CPU internal circuit malfunction) in 2014 Accords. Owners report ABS and VSA not functioning, lights all on, and concerns that braking or stability control will fail, especially in poor conditions. Given the large number of similar reports for this model and year, this appears to be a systemic defect in the ABS/VSA modulator/ECU system in 2013‑to‑2017 Honda Accords, including 2014. Because this is a safety system (brakes, stability control), the defect creates a real risk of crash, injury, or death. I request that NHTSA: Open a formal investigation into the ABS/VSA modulator/ECU failures in 2014 Accords (and related years). Determine whether a recall is needed. Require Honda to provide fixed or replacement units without cost to owners or reimbursment Ensure parts are available (i.e. not back‑ordered) and that the repair is effective and safe.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 Honda Accord. The contact stated that there was film covering the inside of the headlights causing the headlights to fail to illuminate properly. The vehicle had been taken to the dealer who confirmed that it was a known failure. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle had to be taken to a body shop to have the film cleaned off the headlights. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.
Brakes- rear calipers wear uneven on the inside pad 5mm outer and 1mm on inner. This is a safety hazard because seeing the outer pad still was in specifications that I did not need to replace them just yet. Got my car completely inspected due to grinding noise and found that the inner pad was metal to metal ruined my rotor costing me more money as well as if I hadn’t gotten it inspected could have caused an accident. Headlights- new battery installed and headlights still flicker sometimes even completely turn off, I have to pull over and bang on the housing to get them to power back on. That is also a risk to my safety and others if they are to completely turn off again in the night time others won’t see me. Not the only time it has happened. I’ve ran recalls on my vin but dealer said there was no open recalls.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
I brought my 2014 Honda Accord to Honda of Westport (authorized dealer) to complete the active driveshaft safety recall. The dealer informed me the recall COULD NOT be performed unless I first paid $708.31 out of pocket to replace both front ball joints. I was given no choice - pay or leave with the recall unresolved. No vehicle owner should face a financial barrier to completing a federally mandated safety recall
Vehicle drives fine but a week ago the steering, traction, ABS, & brake lights all lit up on my Accord's dashboard. Took car to our regular mechanic, who then conducted diagnostic testing. This in turn, indicated that the ABS control module is the cause. Steering, traction, & braking are quite vital in the safe manuerving of stopping & controlling a vehicle in motion. If unable to manageable do so, I, as well as many others are potentially at risk.
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 HONDA Accord. The contact stated while driving the vehicle she noticed multiple waring lights on the dash, ABS waring, traction control, tire pressure lights blinks, service engine light and steering wheel light with exclamation point. The contact stated there is a trembling feeling with applying the brakes, feels like the tires are not balanced. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V430000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC) to be the cause of the failure however, the VIN was not included in the recall repair. The vehicle was taken to a dealer were it was diagnosed to VSA module failure. The vehicle has not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 224,337.
The contact owns a 2014 Honda Accord. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the TPMS, VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist), and the electric power steering warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the VSA modulator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
The vehicle was sold to me with missing driver seatbelt component.
NOT SURE IF THIS IS A "TAKATA RECALL." AUTO ACCIDENT ON MAJOR INTERSTATE, BREAKING AND MOVING ABOUT 10-15 MPH WHEN VEHICLE WAS STRUCK VARIOUS TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS STRUCK IN THE REAR DRIVER SIDE, THEN TOOK A FRONT STRIKE WITH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT WHILE ALSO RECEIVING A DRIVER SIDE HIT ALONG THE DOOR, REARVIEW MIRROR AREA, AND FRONT TIRE. THE VEHICLE THEN WAS PUSHED INTO A GUARDRAIL FROM STRIKES TO THE CAR IN THE UPPER FRONT AND SIDE REGION OF THE DRIVERS SIDE. NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED DURING THE ACCIDENT OR AFTER, THOUGH EQUIPPED WITH SEVERAL AIRBAG LOCATIONS. THE SEATBELT REMAINED MOVEABLE AND DID NOT TENSE/LOCK UP.

Heating & air conditioning
Reports naming the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.
From owner reports, verbatim
OUR 2014 HONDA ACCORD HAD SOME ROAD DEBRIS PUNCTURE A HOLE IN THE AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSER. FROM WHAT I READ ON THE INTERNET THERE IS A DESIGN FLOW THAT HONDA HAS KNOW ABOUT FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS. WE SPOKE TO THE SERVICE DEPT OF LIA HONDA , PO BOX 1110, ENFIELD CT 06083 AND THEY SAID THAT THE CONDENSER WAS NOT COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT WE PURCHASED FOR $1340 WHEN BE BOUGHT THE CAR BRAND NEW. HONDA REFUSES TO COVER REPLACEMENT AND CALL IT AN ACT OF GOD WHEN DEBRIS FLIES UP AND PUT A HOLE IN THE AC CONDENSER. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC AND HE REPLACED THE PART FOR $476 DOLLARS. I PREFER MY MECHANIC BECAUSE I KNOW AND TRUST HIM, AND HE DOES THE WORK FOR HALF AS MUCH. HONDA DEALERS ARE SCAMMING THEIR CUSTOMERS OUT OF $800-$1000 TO REPLACE PART THAT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE OF THEIR DESIGN FLAW. I AM TIRED OF BEING TAKEN OF ADVANTAGE OF BY BIG COMPANIES AND UNLESS THE GOVERNMENT FORCES THEM TO PAY UP, THEY WILL CONTINUE TO STICK IT TO THEIR CUSTOMERS. I GUESS THE ONLY THING I CAN DO IS SWITCH BACK TO TOYOTA, AND LEAST THE STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE TO DEAL WITH THEIR RUST ISSUES. HOPEFULLY, THE MORE COMPLAINTS YOU GET, THE SOONER HONDA WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. THANK YOU, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
