The contact owned a 2025 Honda CB1000 SP. The contact stated that the transmission intermittently failed to downshift properly. The contact stated that the failure occurred since the motorcycle was purchased. The contact stated that while attempting to downshift, the transmission shifted into neutral instead of the intended lower gear or failed to engage until the clutch was released and then re-engaged. The contact stated that while downshifting from second gear to first gear, the transmission shifted into neutral instead of first gear. The contact stated that the failure had occurred while riding in traffic and while making a turn. During the most recent failure, the contact was driving on a city street toward an intersection in a turn lane while attempting to downshift for the turn, and the transmission shifted into neutral instead of first gear. The contact stated that no warning light was illuminated; however, the gear indicator intermittently displayed a dash (-) or neutral instead of the selected gear. The motorcycle was taken to an independent mechanic, who duplicated the failure during a test ride; however, no repairs were performed. The motorcycle was then taken to an authorized Honda dealer in May 2026, where it remained while the dealer attempted to duplicate the failure. The contact stated that a recall repair was performed during the dealer visit; however, the transmission concern was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,100.

Subject: Suspension Defect Report — Rear Shock Spring Rate / Stability Hazard To Whom It May Concern, I am submitting a safety defect report concerning my 2025 Honda Hornet SP1000. The motorcycle is equipped with Öhlins suspension, and from new, the rear suspension has exhibited unsafe behavior due to an inappropriate spring rate. Safety-related issues observed: The rear shock frequently tops out and unloads over standard road bumps, causing instability and momentary loss of traction. Tire temperature measurements after a long ride confirm a load imbalance: rear tire 99 °F (underheated), front tire 124 °F (overheated). This indicates the rear suspension is not carrying proper load, forcing excessive stress onto the front end. The motorcycle becomes unpredictable mid-corner and during throttle transitions because the rear fails to remain planted. The resulting instability poses a clear risk to rider safety on normal public roads. I weigh approximately 150 pounds, and at this weight the stock rear spring rate is excessively stiff. The suspension is effectively tuned for a much heavier rider, which makes the motorcycle unsafe for a significant portion of its intended market. Requested action: That NHTSA investigate this suspension tuning defect to determine whether it constitutes a broader safety concern requiring manufacturer remedy or recall.
