What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2005 Honda Civic, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The air bag light came on in April of 2022 indicating that the air bag will not deploy in the event of a car accident. We took the car to the Honda dealership and the mechanic diagnosed it as a bad seat-belt tensioner and confirmed that the part is under warranty by American Honda. The dealership requested the part from American Honda and they have failed to provide the part to the dealership stating that is is not available. They have given us ETAs for the part but it has never arrived. We requested a rental car to drive while waiting for the part but were denied by both American Honda and the dealership. American Honda's response is that the car just should not be driven. We cannot sell the car while this light in on but need to continue to drive the car for work. The air bag light remains on and still will not deploy if an accident were to occur causing a significant safety risk. We have not involved police or insurance representatives or any other outside parties aside from American Honda and the dealership. We spoke with a representative,at American Honda today who again confirmed that they do not have the part, do not have an ETA on the part and will not pay for a safe vehicle to drive. Considering the amount of time that has elapsed, they are clearly in violation of their warranty.
- Sensor in seatbelt, causing airbags not to deploy (airbag light is on) -Since the airbags will not deploy, this is a danger -The dealer, Avalon Honda, confirmed that replacement of this part is warrantied for life by Honda. They are willing to replace it at no cost but the part has been on "Critical Back Order" status since the problem emerged for us (November 2022). Avalon Honda has not been able to get the part (for the driver's side seatbelt) and my daughter's safety is at risk. Honda warranties this for life BECAUSE it is a safety issue. I've been more than patient and now need help getting Honda to move. -Yes there is a warning light, the airbag light is on. It first appeared in November of 2022. In February Avalon Honda obtained the part "through other means" for the passenger side seatbelt despite the "critical back order" excuse from Honda. Since February I have been waiting for the OTHER (driver's side) seatbelt sensor to be replaced. I was told in February that the part would be available at the end of April. That time has come and gone and I now need help to force Honda to act. -Part number is 04816-S5D-A02ZC
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Pushrods going through engine and shredding bottom half of motor. I know many 05 Honda civic owners who have had the same issues
I purchased this car from a Honda dealership used for over 7 thousand dollars in 2021 it's a 2005 car with known issues. I drove it for less than 2 months before it overheated without an indication by the gauge that it was overheating and blew a head gasket. It was acting funny before it happened I brought it back to the dealership a couple times they charged me several hundred dollars to do nothing besides diagnosed it and told me nothing was wrong with it. Obviously there's plenty wrong with a car I'm just finding out that the battery is probably going to die really soon and I had to pay a mechanic to put another engine in it and paid another 2 thousand dollars. Now the transmission is completely gone and I have to figure out how to come up with more money to fix it while I'm out of work because of this I should have done better research before I bought this car but why aren't there any lemon laws for used cars just purchased from dealerships in a lot of states Florida only has one if it's a brand new car very unhelpful and unfortunate for me right now that a multi billion dollar company can do this to me and leave me broke without a car and out of work knowing they sold me a car that was going to have multiple failures really soon luckily I wasn't on the highway when my engine died or after I replaced the engine and the transmission died or it could have been dangerous my advice is don't trust anyone and good luck in this country with transportation gas is $4 a gallon only reason I bought this car and it was a bad idea to say the least I thought buying from a dealership wouldn't leave me completely broke and broken down . Oh and the cruise control malfunctioned once scared me to death on the highway almost caused me to crash into the car ahead of me.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.

Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Hagerstown Honda is 80 plus miles away from my house. My ignition failed which is a very common problem in that generation of all Honda vehicles. My ignition failed and I had it replaced by a local mechanic with genuine Honda parts. All dealerships including Honda run a monopoly on reprogramming ignition. The local mechanic taped the old key under the dash to get the car started. Not long after my hybrid battery failed and I had it replaced at Hagerstown Honda. I told them to reprogram the ignition. They said they would do it and never did it. Not long after the car refused to start and I found out from the local mechanic that Hagerstown Honda never reprogrammed the ignition. Car has sat in my driveway for years with me renewing tags. Honda started calling me and sending me letters via USPS about thd airbag. I told them to not call me anymore. My father had the same problem with his 2004 Honda Accord. Honda stalked and harassed us for years, supposedly on behalf of your agency. Honda has violated FCC regulations. I wrote a letter to Maryland state and they forwarded it to Honda serving as a cease and disist. They haven't complied. I sent a copy a complaint to your agency which was forwarded to Honda and they decided to stalk and harass me through email. I've had to unsubscribe twice. The car has been sitting so long the frame is probably totaled. I want a new car or money in the equivalent to a new car and compensated for the harassment.
Hood safety latches both failed, causing hood to slam into windshield breaking windshield & denting hood. Various electrical issue, battery issue. Alternator issues that haven been tested to be working but don't work in car. Coolant system loses pressure & over heats, no leaks, no blown head gaskets. Battery, starter & alternator all good but car will not start. Everything has power but will not turn over. Over 3,000 dollars I have spent fixing numerous factory issues that have broken or simply failed. 400$ for need windshield & dent removal from defective locking device. Soon as I fix something on my car, something else breaks. 2005 civic 1.7l automatic 126,700 miles. I have roughly 50K miles less on original engine than most & I've been having issue since I bought it at 121,100 miles. Nothing but pouring money into a car that should run with zero problems.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.

Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
I USE TO HAVE TO PUSH THE BUTTON IN ON THE GEAR SHIFT TO GET IT TO GO INTO GEAR. NOW YOU CAN JUST FREELY PUSH IT BACK AND FORTH.
**I AM REPORTING THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE I HAVE NOTICED THE SAME TAIL-LIGHTING FAILURE ON DOZENS OF SEVENTH-GENERATION HONDA CIVICS NOW ON THE ROAD.** MY 2005 HONDA CIVIC 4-DR SEDAN FAILED ITS 2013 VIRGINIA SAFETY INSPECTION BECAUSE THE LICENSE-PLATE LIGHT AND TRUNK-LOCATED BRAKE LIGHTS (OF WHICH THERE ARE TWO) WERE NOT WORKING. I TOOK THE CAR TO LANDMARK HONDA OF ALEXANDRIA, VA., AND THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE WIRING IN THE CAR'S TRUNK WAS BROKEN. THEY SOLDERED THE WIRE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. IN FEBRUARY 2014 I EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AND TOOK THE SEDAN TO MY LOCAL DEALER IN BOSTON, MASS., WHERE I NOW LIVE (HONDA CARS OF BOSTON). THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE SOLDERING HAD FAILED AND THEY REPLACED A TRUNK WIRING HARNESS TO BETTER RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. I SPENT APPROXIMATELY $500 BETWEEN THE TWO REPAIR JOBS AT THE TWO HONDA DEALERS. I AM CONCERNED THAT ALL SEVENTH-GENERATION HONDA CIVICS MAY SUFFER FROM A WIRING DEFECT THAT AFFECTS VEHICLES' VISIBILITY ON THE ROAD. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE. *TR
Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
2005 HONDA CIVIC HYBRID CVT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 42,000 MILES. CAR WILL NOT SHIFT IN ANY GEAR. CONTACT HONDA AMERICAN REPRESENTATIVE, AND HONDA WILL NOT COVERED THIS INCIDENT UNDER WARRANTY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. $4,500 ~ $5,200 REPLACEMENT JOB AT LOCAL HONDA DEALER. MOST HORRIBLE CAR I'D EVER OWN!!! VERY DISAPPOINT WITH HONDA. BUYERS BEWARE WITH HONDA HYBRID MODEL. *TR
WHILE ACCELERATING MODERATELY, OFTEN WHILE TRYING TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE ON THE FREEWAY OR EVEN WHILE TRYING TO MAINTAIN SPEED UP A HILL, OUR 2005 HONDA CIVIC HYBRID WOULD SLIP OUT OF GEAR AND THE ENGINE WOULD SUDDENLY REV UP TO REDLINE RPM (IT IS AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION). THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN COULD NOT REPRODUCE THIS EVENT. AFTER A FEW MONTHS, THIS STARTED HAPPENING QUITE OFTEN -- EVERY DAY IN PREDICTABLE LOCATIONS ON OUR DRIVING ROUTE. IN ADDITION, A JUDDER DEVELOPED WHEN STARTING FROM A STOP. THIS LATTER ISSUE WAS IDENTIFIED BY HONDA AND A TECHNICAL BULLETIN WAS PUT OUT. THE JUDDER MADE THE CAR NEARLY UNDRIVABLE, SO WE AGAIN TOOK THE CAR IN. THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS REPLACED AND THE CLUTCH PLATES WERE BURNISHED. THE TRANMISSION SLIPPAGE AND ENGINE REVVING DISAPPEARED. NOW, 5 MONTHS LATER, THE TRANSMISSION SLIP WITH ENGINE REVVING HAS RETURNED AS WELL AS THE JUDDER STARTING AGAIN. WE PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY, SO THE COST HAS NOT BEEN AN ISSUE SO FAR, HOWEVER OUR WARRANTY EXPIRES IN JUNE 2010. WE ARE MAINLY CONCERNED WITH THE REPEATED APPEARANCE OF THE PROBLEMS, ESPECIALLY THAT THE TRANSMISSION SLIP/ENGINE REVVING CAN BE A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE ON AN ON-RAMP OR PASS A CAR ON A TWO-LANE ROAD. IF THE ENGINE SLIPS OUT OF GEAR WHILE PASSING A CAR, IT MAY HAVE TRAGIC RESULTS.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
RECENTLY I'VE BEEN SMELLING GAS FUMES FROM UNDER MY CAR EVERY TIME I HAVE THE DOOR OPEN AND IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S COMING FROM UNDER THE CAR. BUT I NOTICED A FEW DAYS AGO THAT IT'S GETTING WORSE BECAUSE I COULD SMELL IT INSIDE THE CABIN OF MY CAR. LAST NIGHT I HAVE THE WINDOWS CLOSED AND AS I OPENED MY DOOR TODAY SEPTEMBER THE 11TH 2020, THE ODOR WAS SO STRONG FUMES OF FUEL. CAN'T THIS BE ONE OF THE REASON FOR A CAR TO GET A RECALL? EXPOSED FUEL INSIDE THE CABIN IS DANGEROUS, ISN'T IT? LUCKILY, MY AIR CONDITIONING IS NOT WORKING RIGHT NOW OR ELSE I WOULD HAVE MY WINDOWS ROLLED UP AND IF I SMOKE A CIGARETTE, THE CAR MIGHT BLOW UP. IT SEEMS LIKE IT HAPPENS TO HONDA A LOT BECAUSE MOST HONDA BETWEEN 2001 TO 2005 VERSION SEEM TO BE AFFECTED BY THIS. ESPECIALLY WATCHING YOUTUBE, THERE'S A LOT OF COMPLAINTS AND THEY ARE SHOWING HOW COMMON THIS IS FOR HONDA CIVIC. WHAT DOES IT TAKE FOR THIS TO BE A PART BEING RECALLED? MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS IS DANGEROUS! IS THIS JUST PART OF MAINTENANCE EVEN IT'S A DANGEROUS SITUATION? OR ISN'T IT A FLAW OF THE PARTS BEING USE? I'M NOT MECHANICALLY INCLINED AND I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FORK 300 TO 500 DOLLARS TO PAY THE MECHANIC TO REPAIR THIS, EVEN THOUGH I REALLY FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED BECAUSE I KNOW THAT IT'S DANGEROUS. ONE SPARK CAN BLOW UP MY CAR AND I HAPPEN TO BE DRIVING WITH PASSENGERS OR EVEN JUST MYSELF.
FILLED FUEL TANK ON MY WAY TO WORK, AFTER DRIVING TO WORK ON THE FREEWAY COULD SMELL FUEL, THOUGHT IT COULD JUST BE RESIDUAL ON MY HANDS SINCE I JUST FILLED UP. WENT TO LUNCH AND SMELLED FUEL AGAIN ONLY STRONGER NOW, WHEN I BACKED OUT OF THE PARKING SPACE TO RETURN TO WORK I NOTICED A LARGE WET SPOT UNDER MY CAR, GOT OUT AND LOOKED UNDER MY CAR, COULD SEE BOTTOM OF FUEL TANK WAS WET. DROVE TO WORK, REMOVED MY REAR SEAT TO ACCESS TOP OF TANK, NOTICED FUEL WAS LEAKING OUT OF TOP OF FUEL PUMP WHEN THE KEY IS TURNED ON, WENT TO HONDA DEALER NEAR MY WORK AND PURCHASED A PUMP, PARTS ASSOCIATE MENTIONED THEY FAIL REGULARLY, SEEMS TO ME THERE SHOULD BE SOME SORT OF RECALL FOR A FUEL LEAK THAT HAPPENS REGULARLY.

SRS INTERNAL UNIT FAILURE AT 79K MILES. CAR IS 2005 HONDA CIVIC AND ACCORDING TO GOOGLE SEARCHES AND CIVIC FORUMS THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH HONDA VEHICLES (NOT JUST CIVICS) AND HONDA QUOTES A $800+ PRICE TO REPAIR RATHER THAN STANDING BY THEIR VEHICLES. WITH THE SRS LIGHT ON, THE AIRBAGS DO NOT WORK, CAR CANNOT BY SMOGGED, AND IS A SERIOUS HAZARD TO THE DRIVE AND OCCUPANTS UNTIL THE EXPENSIVE REPAIR IS MADE. CALLED HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD NOT LESSEN THE COST, NOR HELP COVER THE REPAIR IN ANY WAY.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HONDA CIVIC. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, A TIRE FAILED. THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHED INTO AN EMBANKMENT. THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE CONTACT SUFFERED INJURIES TO THE BACK THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V370000 (AIR BAGS) WAS RECEIVED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

MY HONDA CIVIC BEGAN TO SHAKE WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED HIGHER THAN 35MPH, THE REAR TIRES ARE BALD. THE MECHANIC I TOOK IT TO SAID THE WHEELS COULD NOT HOLD THE ALIGNMENT AND SUGGESTED ADDING A PART TO HOLD THE TIRES IN ALIGNMENT AND TO ALLOW FOR TIGHTENING OF THE ALIGNMENT. *TR
NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 97V140000. COMPONENT: SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:COIL SPRINGS. DETAILS: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. ROAD GRIT AND GRAVEL ASSOCIATED WITH WINTER ROAD CONDITIONS CAN PENETRATE THE RUBBER OF THE LOWER FRONT SPRING MOUNTS AND ACCUMULATE IN THE MOUNTS CAUSING NOTCHES OR PITS TO DEVELOP. THESE NOTCHES CAN DEVELOP CRACKS RESULTING IN BREAKAGE OF A BOTTOM COIL OF THE SPRING. CONSEQUENCE: THE VEHICLES RIDE HEIGHT COULD BE AFFECTED CAUSING NOISE WHILE THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN. THE VEHICLES DYNAMIC STABILITY CAN BE AFFECTED REDUCING THE DRIVERS ABILITY TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. CORRECTIVE ACTION: DEALERS WILL REPLACE BOTH FRONT SPRINGS AND LOWER SPRING MOUNTS. *KB
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
185/70 R14 88T SL BSW Tire blew out while driving on the highway. Caused the vehicle to come to a stop and the vehicle was rear-ended. The driver lost consciousness and was taken to the ER. Injuries included TBI and multiple lacerations (possibly due to airbag deployment issues). Collision report not included here.
ON 2/26/10, I HAD 4 NEW TIRES INSTALLED IN MY 2005 CIVIC; AT 56,000 MILES. EVEN PURCHASED THE WARRANTY. ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER, I FELT A VERY MILD VIBRATION BETWEEN 48-52 MPH. I DIDN'T MAKE SUCH A BIG DEAL OF IT THEN. THE PAST 6 WEEKS OR SO, ABOUT 60,000 MILES, THE CIVIC'S VIBRATING HAS GOTTEN WORSE BETWEEN 48-52MPH. I TOOK IT FOR IT'S MAINTENANCE, HAD EVERYTHING DONE, ESPECIALLY THE BREAK ROTORS AND ALIGNMENT. THE VIBRATING HAS NOT STOPPED. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. ACCORDING TO THEM, THE CAR WAS CHECKED, AND FELT THE VIBRATING. CAR WAS RE-ALIGNED, THE SAID IT WAS THE REAR STRUTS. I HAD THEM REPLACED WITH A DIFFERENT AUTO MECHANIC, THEN HAD IT RE-ALIGNED ONCE MORE TO ANOTHER AUTO MECHANIC. STILL VIBRATES. BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE MECHANIC WHO INSTALLED THE REAR STRUTS. HE DID A TEST DRIVE, AND BALANCED THE TIRES. THE VIBRATING IS STILL THERE. NOW IT'S BETWEEN 48-60MPH AT RANDOM. SOMETIMES IT DOES IT, SOMETIMES IT'S MILD, SOMETIMES IT STRONGER, DEPENDING AFTER MY APPLY THE BRAKES. THE VIBRATING OCCURS UNDER THE SEATS, FLOOR, REAR, SOME IS FELT VERY MILDLY ON THE DASHBOARD. COULD BE SINCE THE REST OF THE CAR IS VIBRATING. I'M VERY FRUSTRATED. *TR

I FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM WITH THE HEAD LIGHTS DIM FROM REGULAR BRIGHTNESS TO REALLY LOW WHILE DRIVING. THEN I NOTICED THE LIGHTS INSIDE THE CAR DOING THE SAME DIM WHILE THE ENGINE IS OFF. Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
In 2019 Honda came out to fix the air bag recall. I never had problems with the air bag light coming on until after they fixed the air bag. The air bag light stays on all the time along with a check engine light. Also I’ve had to replace the whole transmission in 2019. In 2018 my engine cracked and I had to replace it with another engine. Currently the rack and pion went bad. The vehicle will at times steer on its own and sometimes the steering wheel won’t turn. I’ve spent thousands of dollars over the past few years. I do not believe Honda put in the air bags correctly. I barely had driven my car anywhere and I should not be having these types of problems. It’s a safety hazard.
AS I WAS MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN, A KEY FROM MY KEY RING BECAME LODGED IN A SCREW HOLE IN THE STEERING WHEEL. AS I WAS EXITING THE TURN, THE LODGED KEY RAN UP INTO THE ARM OF THE WIPER BLADES CONTROL, PREVENTING THE WHEEL FROM STRAIGHTENING OUT. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TURNING AND RAN INTO A PARKED CAR. THE REPORTING POLICE OFFICER OBSERVED AND NOTED THE DEFECT IN HIS POLICE REPORT. NO TICKET WAS ISSUED. *TR

MY MOM JUST BOUGHT ME A 2005 HONDA CIVIC ABOUT 6 WEEKS. MY A/C WAS NOT BLOWING OUT COLD AIR SO IT WAS TAKEN TO THE HONDA DEALER SHIP AND I FOUND OUT THAT A PEBBLE HAD HIT THE A/C CONDENSER CAUSING A LEAK. AND ITS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. IT IS GOING TO COST ME ABOUT 700 DOLLARS. ITS A DESIGN FLAW. I WAS RESEARCHING ON LINE ABOUT THIS HAPPENING TO ANYONE ELSE AND THERE ARE ALOT. HONDA SHOULD COVER THE COST OF A NEW A/C CONDENSER BECAUSE OF THERE DESIGN FLAW. *TR
