What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2003 Honda Odyssey, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission unintendedly shifted into gear. An unknown dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was included in four unrepaired recalls. The contact informed the dealer that she was afraid to drive the vehicle due to the failure. Additionally, the contact stated that the transmission and the motor mounts were replaced in May 2025. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 04V176000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 251,599.

All recalls have been completed on this 2003 Honda Odyssey Van but every now and then the warning light for the supplemental restraint system comes on and will stay on for a long time. the next trip it will be fine. Just wondering if this is something to be concerned about. It is a car we keep at our beach house and only use on a limited basis but I need to know it is safe. I recently had vehicle scanned and had all old codes cleared. If the air bag situation is the cause of this I don't want to be driving it. East Coast Honda in Myrtle Beach, SC. (833-299-3248, 8756A US Highway 17 Bypass South, Myrtle Beach SC. 29588) has replaced the recalled airbags on 2 different recalls. Thank you for your assistance. [XXX]. TAKATA RECALL. AS I WAS REACHED A STOP ZONE IN FRONT OF A SCHOOL PEDESTRIAN CROSSING ON 4/11/16, I HEARD A LOUD BOOM LIKE AN EXPLOSION ON MY MINIVAN. THE SOUND WAS EXTREMELY LOUD AND MADE MY EARS HURT AND I WAS DISORIENTED. I LOOKED AROUND THRU THE WINDOW AND REAR VIEW MIRRORS BUT I DIDN'T SEE ANYONE HITTING OR ANY TYPE OF COLLISION WITH ANY OBJECT OR ERWIN. I THEN FELT FABRIC TOUCHING MY LEFT ARM AND SAW THE SIDE AIRBAGS HAD DEPLOYED ON HEIR OWN. BOTH DRIVER SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE SIDE AIRBAGS WERE OUT OF THE SEAT AND DEPLETED . MY 2 YEAR OLD SON WAS IN THE SECOND ROW SEAT BEHIND ME AND MY 5 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS SITTING ON THE SECOND ROW SEAT BEHIND THE PASSENGER SIDE. THEY WERE SCARED AND I DROVE THE VAN TO MY HOUSE ABOUT 1.5 BLOCKS AWAY. I HAVE A CONTINUOS RINGING IN MY LEFT EAR SINCE THAT DAY. MY PRIMARY MD HAS REFERRED ME TO AUDIOLOGY SPECIALIST. AGAIN, THE VEHICLE WAS AT A STOP AT THE PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY IN FRONT OF SILVERWING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN AREY DR. IN SAN DIEGO CA. I HAVE NOT MOVED THE CAR FROM MY HOME DRIVEWAY AFRAID THAT THE FRONT AIRBAGS COULD DEPLOY THE SAME WAY. I CONTACTED HONDA AND THEY WANT TO TOE THE CAR TO A DEALER TOMORROW 4/15/16 TO PLACE THE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER AND EVALUATE WHAT THE ISSUE WAS AND HOW TO CORRECT IT.
A METAL BRACKET RIVETING THE DRIVER SEAT BOTTOM TO THE POWER SEAT STRUCTURE HAS TORN THROUGH DUE TO METAL FATIGUE. THIS ALLOWS THE WHOLE DRIVE SEAT TO MOVE FREELY WITHIN A FEW INCHES OF TRAVEL DURING ACCELERATION AND TURNING.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE DECELERATED INTO SECOND GEAR AND THE SPEED DECREASED TO 35 MPH. THE VEHICLE JERKED VIOLENTLY AND ABRUPTLY. THE RPMS INCREASED TO EIGHT THOUSAND RPMS AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SHIFT OUT OF SECOND GEAR. THE CONTACT WAS FORCED TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL GEAR AT 25 MPH IN ORDER TO COAST. THE CONTACT MANAGED TO SHIFT INTO DRIVE FROM NEUTRAL GEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 04V176000 (POWER TRAIN). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. 1.STARTING IN EARLY JULY 2016, MY HONDA ODYSSEY BEGAN RANDOMLY ACCELERATING ON THIS OWN, WITHOUT A HUMAN DEPRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. WHILE IN DRIVE, THE CAR ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN. 2.WHEN THIS HAPPENS, I HAVE TO PRESS EXTREMELY HARD ON THE BRAKE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP. THEN, WHEN I PLACE THE CAR IN PARK, THE RPM INCREASES TO BETWEEN 5,OOO AND 7,000. AGAIN, THIS IS WITHOUT A HUMAN DEPRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. 3.THIS ISSUE SEEMS TO OCCUR WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONING IS TURNED ON, AND IT FEELS LIKE THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM IS TAKING OVER EVEN THOUGH IT'S TURNED ON. 4.THIS ISSUE DOESN'T ALWAYS HAPPEN IMMEDIATELY ONCE THE CAR IS TURNED ON. IT SOMETIMES TAKES A RANDOM AMOUNT OF TIME TO MANIFEST ITSELF WHILE THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN. 5.I'VE FACED THIS ISSUE AT LEAST 15 TO 20 TIMES OVER THE PAST 2 MONTHS. 6.OBVIOUSLY, THIS ISSUE IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND MAY RESULT IN SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH FOR THE DRIVER AND OTHER MOTORISTS. AND THEREFORE, IT MUST BE DEALT WITH IMMEDIATELY. THE HONDA DEALER SAID THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG, BUT ONLY CHECKED THE VEHICLES CPU. THIS IS INSUFFICIENT BECAUSE, AS INDICATED ABOVE, THE CPU WILL NOT REGISTER AN ISSUE IN IDLE MODE OR WHEN THE PROBLEM ISN'T ACTUALLY HAPPENING.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
Van has open recalls on driver and passenger side airbags. Van also has a defective driver front seat belt tensioner that Honda claims has a lifetime warranty, but Hendrick Honda of Bradenton FL refuses to perform the recalls or replace the defective seatbelt tensioner. Even after advising them that they are required by law to perform any open recalls and are not allowed to charge anything for said recalls, Service Writer "Tammy" was uncooperative and kept alluding to things like she couldn't guarantee we would not be charged up to $1500 for these repairs which honestly should ALL be recalls as they are life safety issues. Due to their refusal to perform even the NHTSA recalls even after being given the documentation of the required recall, we have to find another dealership and hope they will perform the recalls.
We have had issues with our drivers side seatbelt since we purchased the vehicle new. First it had retraction issues, then the plastic stop button that keeps the buckle from sliding down failed, disintegrated. We asked the dealer to replace the belt which they refused to do. We have brought it to the dealer before, even generating a case number from Honda, but Honda refused to repair the belt. Over the years it has gotten progressively worse, where the belt is seriously frayed, and there are retraction issues. In August 2022, I contacted our local dealer, Piazza Honda in Springfield, PA. It took almost a month for them to take the car, make some photographs, and then to leave out of the notes that we had an ongoing retraction issue. Two months later, Honda Corporate informed me that they are denying the claim for the defective seatbelt. The warranty as stated in the handbook states a lifetime warranty for seatbelts. All aspects of the car pass State of PA Inspection requirements, all other aspects of the SRS systems are fully functional, with the exception of the drivers seatbelt. We believe that Honda's determination of non-liability is a ruse, a cynical attempt to exploit their customers in a critical safety component. We deserve a replacement seatbelt, and Honda customers need to be reminded that Honda is legally required to stand by the mandated Lifetime Warranty for Seatbelts. We feel that our only recourse to request that your agency look into this issue, and remind Honda of their responsibility. Honda's unconscionable conduct should not be condoned, not tolerated. This is not the first time Honda has tried to harm it's customers. The Federal government forced Honda to extend the warranty for its automatic transmissions, and repair defective ones. Our vehicle suffered from the same transmission issue, but we fell just outside the extended warranty period. The cost of the part (Honda 04818-S0X-A02ZH) is quite high from Honda, in excess of $667.73 without labor.

YELLOW SRS WARNING LIGHT COME ON WHEN DRIVING ON A ROUGH ROAD. THIS TELLS ME THAT AIR BAG SYSTEM IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. IT MAY NOT DEPLOY IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS ISSUE STARTED SINCE 2009. SECOND ISSUE IS THAT FRONT BRAKES VIBRATE SO MUCH. I HAD FULL BRAKE SERVICE AND RESURFACE DISC BUT IT ONLY STOP THIS PROBLEM FOR COUPLE THOUSAND MILES THEN VIBRATION COMES BACK WHEN BRAKING. MANSFIELD MOTOR GROUP OF MANSFIELD , OHIO REPLACED A SRS UNIT ON MY HONDA THAT WAS DONE SO THAT HONDA CORP. COULD COLLECT INFORMATION OFF OF THIS UNIT . WHEN THEY BROUGHT THIS UNIT ON LINE , THERE WAS WAS A PASSENGER SEAT AIR BAG / SENSOR ALERT AND THEY WASN'T ABLE TO CLEAR THIS INDICATION . THEY DID SOME TROUBLE SHOOTING PROCEDURES TO NO AVAIL . I WAS INFORMED OF THIS PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD THAT THE SENSOR REPLACEMENT WOULD COST ME APP. $ 1000..00 , IN WHICH I REFUSED AND TOLD THEM TO PUT BACK THE OLD UNIT THAT HAD NO ISSUES CONCERNING THE THAT OR ANY OTHER SENSOR . THIS RECALL # 15-026 , AFTER CALLING HONDA , WAS TO GAIN INFORMATION FROM AN SRS RECALL #15-013 THAT HAS NEVER BEEN INSTALLED , OR THIS IS WHAT I WAS LED TO BELIEVE , WHICH MMG HONDA TOLD ME THAT HONDA HAD NOT FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM AS YET . I RECIEVED THE RECALL LETTER FROM HONDA IN MARCH OF 2015 FOR THE NHTSA RECALL 15V -045 ---- SERVICE BULLETIN # 15-013 .
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,000.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
ENGINE, SUSPENSION OR UNKNOWN ?: THREE OF THE 4 MOTOR MOUNTS ARE BROKEN AND NOT SUPPORTING THE ENGINE. THE ONE REMAINING MOTOR MOUNT IS UNDER EXTREME STRESS AND CAN FAIL ANYTIME. I HAVE HAD TWO DEALER SERVICE MANAGERS CONFIRM THIS PROBLEM AND BOTH HAVE SAID THAT THEY ARE NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY OR RECALL. BOTH HAVE WARNED ME THAT IT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE IF THE LAST MOUNT FAILS IT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE CONDITION OF THE ROADS AND FREEWAYS MAKE IT VERY HARD TO AVOID POT HOLES AND I HOLD MY BREATH EVERY TIME I HIT ONE TO SEE IF THE MOTOR IS OK. ELECTRICAL: 1. AFTER I HAD THE AIR BAGS THAT WERE RECALLED REPLACED THERE IS AN ELECTRICAL ?? PROBLEM THAT TURNS THE RADIO ON AND OFF (I CAN USUALLY CHANGE IT BY BEATING ON THE STEERING WHEEL BUT THAT DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK.) 2. OCCASIONALLY WHEN I REMOVE THE KEY IT CONTINUES TO BEEP UNTIL I BEAT ON THE STEERING WHEEL. 3. OFTEN WHEN I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD THERE IS A LOUD ELECTRICAL (CRACKING LIKE A SHORT) SOUND IN THE SPEAKERS THAT SOMETIMES I CAN STOP BY BEATING ON THE STEERING WHEEL. IF IT DOESN'T STOP I PULL OVER AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT. 4, THE DOOR AND SLIDER LOCKS DO NOT WORK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WITH THE REMOTE OR THE LOCKS ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR. I HAVE TO ROLL THE WINDOW DOWN SO A PASSENGER CAN UNLOCK THE DOOR OR SLIDER MANUALLY. THESE PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR THE LAST 2+ YEARS. I AM A VERY LOW INCOME 75 YEAR OLD SENIOR WHO CAN'T AFFORD $1000+ TO REPLACE THE FAILED MOTOR MOUNTS. I'VE PUT OUT $750 IN THE LAST YEAR TRYING TO SOLVE THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES AND TRANSMISSION FLUSH.
VEHICLE MAKES POPPING WHEN TURNING LEFT & RIGHT. THE SOUND IS COMING FROM THE FRONT STRUTS & SPRINGS. *TR

I HAD THE SEAT HEATER ON, DRIVER'S SIDE FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES. THE HEATER OFTEN GETS EXTREMELY HOT, SO I DID NOT THINK ANYTHING WAS DIFFERENT. HOWEVER LATER UPON EXAMINING MY BACK IN THE MIRROR, I HAD A HUGE BURN ON MY BACK THAT LOOKED LIKE I HAD LAID DOWN ON A BBQ GRILL. THERE WERE VERTICAL LINES WHERE THE SEAT HEATER HAD BURNED ME, INTERRUPTED BY SECTIONS WHERE THE CUSHION IS UPHOLSTERED, AND NOT TOUCHING MY BACK. THE BURN IS APPROXIMATELY 12 INCHES LONG AND 8 INCHES ACROSS. *JS
LOSS OF A/C. A/C CONDENSER DEVELOPED A LEAK. REPAIRED AT HONDA DEALERSHIP. *TR
