What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2009 Honda Odyssey, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2009 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while underneath the vehicle, he became aware that there was severe rust on the muffler. The contact stated that there were flakes on the ground. The contact touched the muffler and put a hole in the plate. The manufacturer and dealer were notified of the failure however, the vehicle was not inspected by an independent mechanic or dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000.
Twice during the last year, the bolt securing the drive belt tensioner has broken while driving the vehicle. This results in loss of steering, electrical, and cooling of the engine. The first time the incident occurred on a stretch of rural highway where the lone occupant had to wait for help to arrive. The first date was on May 12, 2022. The second incident took place in an urban area on January 25, 2023. But, with only 8 months in between the incidents, it is apparent there is a problem in this. The original repair in May was accomplished by a Honda dealer.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Windshield wipers and also the key fob and the sliding doors as well as the blinkers do not work all at the same time first time it’s ever happened. It was December 8, 2023 and now it happened again in January 29 of 2024 and the issue still persisted when I look this issue up this has been an ongoing issue for many years and yet Honda has done nothing about this and it’s not just the 2009 it’s other years as well as other Hondas from other years as well, it is a defect within the company where they’re doing something that causes these things to go! It is a safety issue as this just happens out of nowhere without any warning while I’m driving. All of a sudden it just happened the first time and I didn’t even realize it until I didn’t hear the clicking and someone said hey your blinkers are not working. Also, the second time it happened happened all over again while I was driving out of nowhere would not work and it was raining as well and I couldn’t see anything and my lights wouldn’t work so it’s definitely a safety issue .
my drivers side door started making a grinding noise and when we attempted to close the door it it fell off the track, it almost closed my child in the door, now there is significant body damage and my door is not working
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
FRONT BRAKES AND ROTORS WERE CHANGED SEVERAL TIMES. LAST WITH DRILLED/SLOTTED ROTORS. VIBRATION IS LESS WITH THOSE, BUT STILL THERE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH OTHER PEOPLE AS WELL. SO SPEED LITTLE VIBRATION, HIGHER SPEED INCREASES VIBRATION. HAS BEEN GOING OVER THE YEARS, IS WORSE WHEN IN THE MOUNTAINS.
WE WERE COMING DOWN A MOUNTAIN AND EVEN THOUGH I WAS USING THE ENGINE TO SLOW DOWN THE BRAKES STARTED PULSING AND THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED SHAKING. SINCE THAT TIME THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN WORSE AND NOW HAPPENS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE PROBLEM DOES NOT GO AWAY UNTIL THE BRAKES HAVE COOLED COMPLETELY DOWN. I CHECKED ON LINE AND FOUND OUT THAT THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH THE ODYSSEY'S FOR YEARS AND HAPPENS EVEN AFTER REPLACING THE PADS AND ROTORS. OUR VEHICLE NOW HAS 74,000 MILES ON IT AND WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURS THE SHAKING OF THE STEERING WHEEL CAN BE SEVERE. *TR
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
Honda installed a VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) in this engine which shuts down the back three cylinders to save fuel when the car warms up. You’ll know when it kicks in when you see ECO on your dash. When the cylinders shut down it starts an abnormal wear and tear on those cylinders. High oil consumption, fouled plugs, the need to repair the back three cylinders and misfiring of the engine are some of the problems. Honda did repair some vehicles if they experienced rough running and misfiring on those cylinders because they knew the issue was the VCM. However, when my 2009 Honda Odyssey started having those problems in 2024 they wouldn’t fix the problem and stated it was too late to fix the engine. The timeline, according to Honda, had passed to repair the damaged engine. I never received a recall for this known safety issue. The engine would cut out and the engine light would come on and it sputtered down the road on three of the six cylinders. Honda knew this was a problem but they wouldn’t fix my engine. If I had brought it in years earlier they would have fixed the known problem with the VCM but they wouldn’t deactivate the VCM to prevent it from destroying the repaired engine. The price to fix the engine was over $4200. I feel they should have repaired the engine and then deactivated the VCM by bypassing the the temperature sensor to prevent it from going into ECO MODE VCM. The safety of the occupants was at risk due to the lack of acceleration and the ability to drive the vehicle in a normal manner. I feel a safety recall is justified and the sensor should be deactivated to prevent further damage to the engine.
Transmission gears, while driving gears don't engage properly. It struggles to change gears specifically between 3rd to 4th gear. Also when parked and change to Drive makes a stump noise.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
BURNS EXCESSIVE OIL UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS AND CONSTANTLY ADDING OIL. IN ADDITION THE CHECK OIL AND/OR CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS DO NOT COME. SEVERAL OCCASIONS HAVE FOUND IT BONE DRY.
ON 2/3/2019 I WAS ATTEMPTING TO PARK MY 2009 HONDA ODYSSEY ON A CITY STREET WHEN IT ACCELERATED WITHOUT ANY PRESSURE BEING APPLIED TO THE GAS PEDAL. I WAS BRAKING WHILE ROLLING FORWARD SLOWLY AND TURNING RIGHT INTO THE PARKING SPACE WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY REVVED AND ACCELERATED THE VEHICLE FORWARD. I APPLIED INCREASING BRAKING PRESSURE WHILE THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV, EXCEEDING THE STOPPING POWER OF THE BRAKES AND CAUSING THE CAR TO LURCH FORWARD TOWARD A PARKED CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I MANAGED TO STOP BY QUICKLY SHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION FROM DRIVE TO PARK. IF I HAD NOT SHIFTED INTO PARK I WOULD HAVE HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THE ENTIRE TIME THIS WAS HAPPENING, MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE AND NO PRESSURE WAS BEING APPLIED TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. AFTER I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTED THE CAR, IT RETURNED TO NORMAL OPERATION. I HAVE REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO AMERICAN HONDA (CASE NUMBER 09315543) AND I AM BRINGING THE VEHICLE IN TO A HONDA DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE AND IT HAD APPROXIMATELY 121,000 MILES ON IT AND IT HAS NOT BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE LEAKED FUEL. THE CONTACT HAD TO FILL THE FUEL TANK MORE THAN USUAL AND THE FUEL WOULD CONTINUE TO LEAK. THE FAILURE CAUSED A FUEL ODOR TO BE PRESENT INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HONDA OF ORLANDO (2211 NORTH SEMORAN BLVD, ORLANDO, FL 32807, 866-938-0927) AND THE POWER STEERING FLUID WAS REPLACED, BUT THE FUEL LEAK CONTINUED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,754.
WHILE STOPPED AT A 4 WAY TRAFFIC INTERSECTION W/LIGHT AND WITH FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE ENGINE RACED ON IT'S OWN CAUSING THE CAR TO SURGE AHEAD UNEXPECTANTLY. I HAD TO TAKE IT OUT OF GEAR TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
Twice during the last year, the bolt securing the drive belt tensioner has broken while driving the vehicle. This results in loss of steering, electrical, and cooling of the engine. The first time the incident occurred on a stretch of rural highway where the lone occupant had to wait for help to arrive. The first date was on May 12, 2022. 2009 HONDA ODYSSEY. ISSUES ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. ON 4TH GEAR JUST SHUDDERS EITHER DOWNSHIFTING OR UP SHIFTING WHILE DRIVING. AND BESIDES ALL THIS ALSO MAKES A KNOCKING SOUND EITHER BACKING UP OR MOVING FORWARD. BESIDES MAKES A HUMMING SOUND FROM TRANSMISSION WHEN DRIVING.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
Vibration between 30-40 mph is usually caused by axles of this car, 06-09 models, that might have safe issue in long run.
On 6/18 I installed a set of aftermarket front left and right lower control arms made by Mevotech part #'s CMS601007 (left) and CMS601008(right), Mevotech has installed a grease zerk on the ball joints which are not on the OEM control arms, in theory this might be good but the grease zerk impacts, INTERFERENCE, with the inside of the wheel. The ball joint grease zerk has hard contact with the inside of the front wheel. - I have pictures of the zerk hitting the wheel and the damage to the wheel. -Safety - damage to the wheel while driving resulting in a loss of vehicle control and possible damage to the ball joint again loss of control. - pictures have been sent to Mevotech and the parts supplier - Parts Geek.

Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HONDA ODYSSEY. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A DEER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE FLATTENED AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. TWO INDEPENDENT MECHANICS CAME TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE WHERE THEY ATTEMPTED TO MANUALLY DEPLOY THE AIR BAGS; HOWEVER, THEY WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS CURRENTLY WAITING TO BE DIAGNOSED BY ANOTHER INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 156,500.
THE SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS ON OUR 2009 HONDA ODYSSEY DEPLOYED WITHOUT KNOWN CAUSE WHILE ROLLING INTO OUR GARAGE. THIS HAPPENED AROUND 9:00AM ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH, 2018. THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT WAS TRAUMATIC, AS WE HAVE COME TO RELY ON THE SAFETY AND RELIABILITY OF THE HONDA ODYSSEY. THE AIRBAG STRUCK MY WIFE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF HER HEAD, BUT THANKFULLY DID NOT STRIKE OUR DAUGHTER IN THE CAR SEAT. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NEEDED BUT LOOKS TO BE LIMITED TO BRUISING AND SORENESS. THE VEHICLE WAS GOING LESS THAN 1 MILE PER HOUR AND WAS HALF WAY INTO THE GARAGE. THERE WAS OVER 1 FOOT OF CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE CAR AND THE GARAGE FRAME. THERE WAS NOT JUST CAUSE FOR THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE SIDE-CURTAIN AIRBAGS. THE DEALERSHIP STALLED THE PROCESS TO REFER THE MATTER TO HONDA AMERICA. NOW, HONDA AMERICA IS TAKING NO RESPONSIBILITY. HONDA AMERICA IDENTIFIED HISTORICAL WEAR AND TEAR ON THE VEHICLE AND BELIEVES THIS IS THE CAUSE OF THE DEPLOYMENT. I AM THANKFUL MY WIFE WAS NOT DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY WHEN THIS OCCURRED. I ASK THAT THE NHTSA INVESTIGATE THIS EVENT, AS I BELIEVE THERE ARE OTHERS LIKE IT. I BELIEVE THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT RISK TO THE PUBLIC FROM A FAULTY DESIGN WITHIN HONDA ODYSSEY THAT CAN CAUSE THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIRBAGS.

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE FRONT SEAT BELT RETRACTOR TENSIONERS DON'T WORK CONSISTENTLY. SOMETIMES THE BELT IS A LITTLE LOOSE WHEN FASTENED AFTER MOVING AROUND A BIT, OR DOESN'T RELEASE WHEN TRYING TO PUT THE BELT ON. WHEN EXITING THE VEHICLE THE BELT OFTEN DOESN'T RETRACT THE BELT ENOUGH TO KEEP THE BELT OR BUCKLE/LATCH FROM GETTING CLOSED IN THE DOOR. IT HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS AND THE DEALER SAID THEY ARE NOT COVERED BY ANY WARRANTY. AS THE PRIMARY SAFETY DEVICE IN A VEHICLE, I BELIEVE THEY SHOULD BE DESIGNED TO WORK RELIABLY FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. OTHER VEHICLES OF THE SAME AGE DON'T HAVE THE SAME ISSUES.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SEAT BELT LOCATED IN THE REAR THIRD ROW SEAT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FAILED TO RELEASE. THE CHILD HAD TO BE CUT OUT OF THE SEAT BELT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO BE INSPECTED. THE VIN AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE NOT AVAILABLE.

Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
VEHICLE HAD CHARGING SYSTEM LIGHT GO ON (BATTERY LIGHT). BATTERY WAS NOT CHARGING AND THERE WAS A NOISE NEAR THE ALTERNATOR. NEXT DAY, LIGHT GOES OFF, BATTERY IS CHARGING NOW, NO NOISE. TWO DAYS AND 40 MILES LATER, NO OTHER LIGHTS AND NO OTHER NOISE. VEHICLE ENTERS HIGHWAY, MAKES IT ABOUT 3 MILES WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL SHUTS OFF. ALL LIGHTS ON THE DASH COME ON AND SHUT OFF. DRIVER PULLS OVER, STARTS TO SEE SMOKE COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. KEEPS HOOD SHUT AND WAITS FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES TO ARRIVE ON SCENE. ENGINE GOES UP IN FLAMES, ALL SEATS ARE BURNED UP, WINDOWS BLOWN OUT, FRONT TIRES MELT. TOTAL LOSS.
THE TPMS CAUSES SLOW AIR LEAKS TO DEVELOP DUE TO FAULTY GASKETS/O RINGS. TIRES WITH THIS PROBLEM REQUIRE REFILLING WITH APPROXIMATELY 5 LBS OF AIR PRESSURE PER WEEK.

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
DRIVING ON I-75 SOUTH BETWEEN EXIT 123 AND EXIT 116. I HEARD A POP AND THE CAR STARTED TO SHIMMY I DECELERATED AND PULLED TO THE SHOULDER. THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE WAS TOTALLY SHREDDED. THE ENTIRE SIDE WALL WAS GONE. I HAD JUST CHECK THE PRESSURES THE DAY BEFORE.
THE FAULT DESCRIPTION RECENTLY REPORTED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 13T006000 FOR MICHELIN TIRE FAILURE FOR A SERIES OF TIRES IS EXACTLY THAT I REPORTED IN COMPLAINT ODI NUMBER 10470716 LAST YEAR. I INCLUDED PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE 235/60R17 TIRES, TWO OF WHICH HAD FAILED, AND THE OTHER TWO WERE SHOWING DEGRADATION DAMAGE. THE 235/60R17 TIRES SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THANKS, *TR

STARTED VEHICLE IN DRIVEWAY MONDAY 3/12/17, OUTSIDE TEMP APPROXIMATELY 37* WITH RAIN. TURNED ON WIPERS, FRONT AND REAR. TURNED ON DEFROST FRONT AND REAR. IMMEDIATELY REAR HATCH WINDOW SHATTERED, GLASS ALL FELL INTO REAR COMPARTMENT BEHIND 3RD ROW SEATS. HAD NOT EVEN YET PUT VEHICLE INTO GEAR TO BACK UP. VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN MOVED AT ALL. HAD USED WIPERS PREVIOUSLY WITH NO ISSUES. THERE WAS NOTHING TO INDICATE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE REAR GLASS BEFORE IT SPONTANEOUSLY SHATTERED. PHOTOS WERE TAKEN NEXT DAY AFTER HAVING PULLED VEHICLE INTO GARAGE OVERNIGHT TO KEEP FROM WATER DAMAGE.

Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
TRANSMISSION HAS ROUGH DOWNSHIFTS WHILE DECELERATING. FIRST ROUGH DOWNSHIFT OCCURS AROUND 40-45 MPH. THE SECOND ROUGH DOWNSHIFT OCCURS AROUND 25 MPH. DURING THE SECOND ROUGH DOWNSHIFT, IT FEELS AS THOUGH THE TRANSMISSION IS SHIFTING TWICE. YOU CAN ALSO HEAR A DISTINCT CLACK NOISE AND FEEL IT THROUGH THE FLOORBOARD OF THE VEHICLE. TRANSMISSION SOFTWARE UPDATED TWICE BUT PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. WE ALSO EXPERIENCE ABRUPT DECELERATION WHEN REMOVING YOUR FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR AROUND 30 MPH. THE VAN SLOWS DOWN ABRUPTLY AS THOUGH THE ENGINE HAS STALLED. WE FEEL THE TRANSMISSION BEHAVIOR IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT LEVEL OF ENGINE/TRANSMISSION BRAKING WILL OCCUR WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR. THIS MAKES YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. *TR
2009 HONDA ODYSSEY - VEHICLE HAS MODERATE VIBRATION AT AROUND 40 MPH. ROOT CAUSE ACCORDING TO HONDA IS DEFECTIVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH. HAVE NOT VERIFIED ROOT CAUSE WITH INDEPENDENT SOURCE. NO ACCIDENT REPORTED AS OF 10/26/09. *TR
