2019 Hyundai Elantra GT Problems
Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2019 Hyundai Elantra GT, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The vehicle is experiencing excessive engine oil consumption. The engine burns approximately one quart of oil per week during normal driving conditions. There are no visible oil leaks, and no warning lights, check engine light, or other dashboard messages have appeared. The oil level drops rapidly between oil changes and requires frequent topping off to prevent the engine from running low on oil. This condition creates a safety risk because the engine could suffer sudden damage, loss of power, or engine failure while driving if the oil level becomes too low. The problem has been ongoing and is reproducible. The oil consumption appears similar to issues reported in recalls and investigations involving Hyundai engines; however, when the VIN was checked, it was reported as not included in any recall. No external oil leaks have been identified. The component available for inspection is the engine and related lubrication system. Prior to discovering the excessive oil consumption, there were no warning lamps, messages, unusual noises, or other symptoms. The issue was first noticed when the oil level was found to be significantly low despite regular maintenance and no evidence of leaks. The cause is believed to be internal engine oil consumption. UNKNOWN whether the manufacturer has inspected the vehicle. Additional inspection and investigation are requested due to the similarity of this condition to known Hyundai engine oil consumption complaints.
Bought the car used last year. The check engine light recently came on and started blinking. And stalled. The car was low in oil but there were no leaks. The engine was knocking. Had a diagnostic done and they said the engine had a death code and needed to be replaced. There is a campaign with Hyundai (#203) that we found online related to faulty piston oil rings and out symptoms matched near perfectly although our car is not associated with any claims
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE CAR HAS A SAFETY DEFECT WHERE IN BETWEEN THE BREAK PEDAL AND THE ACCELERATION PEDAL ABOVE THE TOP PART OF THE PEDALS IS A BOWED THIN PIECE OF METAL SEPARATING THE PEDALS. WHILE WEARING CERTAIN SHOES OR HAVING TO BREAK IN A FAST MANOR THIS RESTRICT FOOT MOVEMENT BETWEEN THE BREAK AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND CAN CAUSE YOUR SHOE TO BECOME WEDGED IN BETWEEN ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS DESIGN RESTRICTS MOVEMENT OF THE DRIVERS RIGHT FOOT TO GET ACCESS TO THE BREAK. THIS ISSUE OCCURS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, AND CAN HAPPEN ON ANY STREET WHILE DRIVING.

Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
Car shut off while at a traffic light and would not restart after several attempts at jumping the battery. It was later determined that the high-pressure fuel pump had failed.

Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
There are several things that go wrong with this car. One is the headlights. I’ve had to change them several times over the span of a year. It also burns an insane amount of oil. I have to change it every 2k-3k miles and even at that point it’s almost out, even with an extender put in it. I’ve been told by numerous mechanics that I should just get rid of the car and they only run into this issue with Hyundais, especially the Elantras. My car had begun to act weird the day I got my oil changed this last time. They looked at it and there was hardly any in there even though I was still under the 3k miles. I’ll have to get my oil changed at least once a month at this rate which will require so much money just to do.

Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
2019 UNDER 40K MILES HAD A BAD STARTER. WOULD WORK OCCASIONALLY, HAD TO HAVE IT REPLACED.

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Elantra GT. The contact stated that after receiving the vehicle and following service updates with the dealer, he became aware that the tire pressure monitoring system was not functioning properly and was indicating incorrect tire pressure readings. The contact also stated that the rear windshield wiper had become inoperable, potentially affecting rearview visibility. The low tire pressure warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who determined that the failures were not related to the service performed. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Service Campaign 993. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 67,000.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
