2014 Hyundai Elantra Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2014 Hyundai Elantra, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

On XXX the vehicle stalled on a busy road, with no warning/ messages appearing until the car died. It was left at Dakota K Auto Repair in Buffalo Grove, IL the same day. They replicated the stalling issue four times, but were unable to diagnose the issue. The vehicle was then brought to Hyundai Auto Nation O'Hare in Des Plaines, IL on XXX. The vehicle stalled twice while they drove it. On XXX their diagnosis stated the timing chain system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then towed to Arlington Performance Center in Arlington Heights, IL and on XXX they added there was also engine failure which needed replacement. The vehicle was purchased from Patrick Hyundai in [XXX] on XXX and has 101,876 miles on it. It is available for inspection. I am writing to formally log a safety defect complaint regarding a severe mechanical failure in my 2014 Hyundai Elantra, equipped with the Nu 1.8L engine. The vehicle has been professionally diagnosed with severe internal engine knocking stemming from catastrophic piston slap, a manufacturing defect inherent to this engine family block that causes premature cylinder wall scuffing, piston ring degradation, and unmetered oil loss. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has previously acknowledged that manufacturing issues in Hyundai engine blocks can cause rotating internal components to fail, leading directly to sudden, un-alerted engine stalling at highway speeds, a severe and immediate safety hazard to drivers, passengers, and surrounding traffic. Despite this being a well-documented mechanical defect (originally addressed under the [XXX] , et al. v. Hyundai Motor America Class Action Settlement / Service Campaign TXXK), Hyundai Motor America is currently refusing to remedy this hazardous component. The manufacturer has repeatedly denied corporate assistance based strictly on an arbitrary calendar timeline (stating the vehicle has passed the 10-year settlement window). The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed and went to the floorboard, and the brakes made abnormal grinding sounds. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who replaced the front brakes, but the rear brakes were leaking brake fluid. The dealer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle back to the independent mechanic for the repair. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic, who replaced the rear brake calipers. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V651000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.

The constant-velocity joint on the driver's side tends to vibrate, and at certain speeds there is play in the steering. Sometimes the handbrake doesn't work properly, and the right-side brake light doesn't work even after replacing the bulbs.

Vehicle was parked and turned off in a residential driveway when a fire spontaneously ignited in the engine compartment. There were no warning lights, unusual sounds, or symptoms prior to the incident. The fire department responded and extinguished the fire using dry chemical suppressant and water. The vehicle was a total loss. The fire appears to have originated in the front engine compartment area. The vehicle was not involved in a collision. The vehicle has a 1.8L Nu DOHC engine and 4-wheel ABS system. This vehicle falls under known NHTSA recalls and class action litigation related to spontaneous engine fires in Hyundai Elantra vehicles, including issues related to defective ABS/HECU modules and engine defects associated with the Nu engine series.

Vehicle Information: 2014 Hyundai Elantra SE Sedan, 4-Cylinder, 6-Speed Automatic, FWD Build Location: USA-Built Version (Montgomery, AL - VIN '5NP') Ownership: Second owner, purchased Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) from the Hyundai of New Port Richey dealer (Florida) in March 2016. Vehicle is owned outright. Mileage: 128,638 Approximate Date Incident Noticed: October 1, 2025 DESCRIPTION OF CRITICAL SAFETY DEFECT & WARRANTY REJECTION I am reporting a failure of the clock spring assembly, which compromises critical safety features and poses an unreasonable risk, especially since this vehicle regularly transports passengers, including children. My VIN was rejected by the Hyundai TXXA Clock Spring Extended Warranty validator despite exhibiting the exact failures covered by the campaign. Safety Failures: Airbag (SRS): Warning light is constantly illuminated; driver-side airbag is disabled and will not deploy, endangering the driver and front passenger. Horn: Completely inoperable, eliminating a vital safety communication feature required to warn other drivers. Cruise Control: Buttons on the steering wheel are non-functional. These failures are caused by a broken electrical connection within the clock spring (which typically runs the Airbag, Horn, and Cruise Control circuits). I believe the denial is related to my vehicle being the USA-Built version (VIN '5NP'). I request that NHTSA investigate why this safety campaign arbitrarily excludes USA-built Elantras (but not Korean-built) experiencing the identical failure, thereby placing an unreasonable repair cost burden on owners for a critical safety component.

I OWN A 2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA LIMITED. IT HANDLES NORMALLY WHEN IN TOWN DRIVING BUT WHILE DRIVING HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE VEERS SLIGHTLY FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND YOU CANNOT KEEP THE VEHICLE STRAIGHT IN CENTER. IT IS HARD TO MANEUVER AS THE STEERING APPEARS TO STICK IN EITHER POSITION AS YOU FIGHT TO KEEP IT IN THE CENTER OF THE ROAD. IT STICKS MORE TO THE LEFT THAN TO THE RIGHT. I AM AMAZED THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL ON THESE CARS BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY HYUNDAI'S HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. I CANNOT PUT A SPECIFIC DATE ON THE INCIDENT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE DOES THIS ALL THE TIME WHEN ON THE HIGHWAY SO I JUST PICKED THE DATE THAT I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM A DEALER.

The positive battery terminal melted from an electrical issue and cannot be fixed due to the model and year of my car. The whole car has fully died and is not functional. My car is available for inspection. The car has only been inspected by a mechanic. The car would have trouble starting and staying on for the last 2 months or so and right before it died it was showing the steering wheel light for 2 days and then all the lights were blinking.

The 2.0L Nu GDI engine in this vehicle is experiencing terminal internal failure. Following a P1326 KSDS warning event, a borescope inspection at an authorized dealership documented severe cylinder wall scoring in all four cylinders. Despite this documented internal block destruction, the manufacturer has denied the mandated settlement warranty repair based on a software-based proxy test (BCT). The vehicle was returned in an unsafe condition and is currently stalling and vibrating violently while in traffic, posing an immediate risk of loss of power and traffic collision. The manufacturer is ignoring the documented physical failure of a core engine component.

Ticking or knocking in the engine, as many other have described. Engine does not accelerator properly due to this issue, causing safety issues with accelerating to merge or enter traffic. Known defect that should be covered by Hyundai as regular scheduled maintenance has been completed.

Multiple safety recalls issued for many models of hyundai cars. most recent that affects the 2014 hyundai elantra and other models is faulty ABS system which could result in engine compartment fire while parked or driving. There is no available repair for this problem. I received notice in the mail on 01/03/2024. I noticed that the safety recall was issued in September of 2023. How is it acceptable that I was informed of a serious safety issue 4 months after it was found out? As I stated previously, there is not an available repair for this serious safety issue and fire risk. They are not offering free services to determine if this issue is affecting my car. Seriously negligent of Hyundai.

Engine light has been on for almost a year with NO prior failure or issues after car hit a dangerous pot hole in the road which caused coil packs and spark plug replacements. After the repair, the engine light stayed on for almost a year and the car has been taken to multiple shops and a Hyundai dealer & diagnosed by Hyundai same answer of "maybe" leak and gas cap being loose. gas cap has been tightened and even replaced few times. Engine light stays on and no one can figure out why . The battery eventually died months later and when battery was replaced engine light came off and then back on days later. same result from mechanics of not knowing true reason engine light is on. 1 month after battery died alternator went out and no signs of knowing and safety concern because engine light stays on but not indicating true reason. 1 day after alternator went out car begin overheating on and off. the engine alert has still been on and never comes on for true reason which can indicate safety concern. problems within vehicle is starting to rise back to back . The signs of a leak but unaware to find is a safety issue

Brake Lights, constantly on. The vehicle, while driving, the brake lights come on and do not turn off. you must force the pedal all the way down, to, sometimes, turn them off. while driving, the lights being on, disables the ECS system, and Cruise Control. while the vehicle is parked and off the lights stay on, unless you depress the pedal, this causes power drains and dead batteries. if the lights do not work, this is a hazard to drive at any time of day. lights will also come on while car is off and has been off for some time.

THE HEADRESTS PUSH MY HEAD FORWARD INTO AN UNCOMFORTABLE & UNNATURAL POSITION. I AM A 5'4" SMALLER FRAMED DRIVER. WHEN SEATED, MY HEAD IS PUSHED SO FAR FORWARD THAT MY LINE OF SIGHT IS THE STEERING WHEEL AND DASH, NOT THE ROAD. THIS MAKES ME HAVE TO CONTINUALLY LIFT MY EYES FROM THEIR NATURAL POSITION TO VIEW THE ROAD. WHEN TRYING TO TURN MY HEAD TO SEE WHILE DRIVING, THE NATURAL TURNING MOTION OF MY NECK IS HINDERED WITH LIMITED RANGE OF MOVEMENT AND AWKWARD UNNATURAL MOVEMENT ANGLE CAUSING SLOWER HEAD ROTATION. THE ANGLE THAT MY HEAD IS FORCED INTO INTERFERES WITH COMFORTABLE NATURAL BREATHING. I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THESE HEADRESTS FOR SHORT DRIVERS IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, BUT THESE ASPECTS OF NEWER STYLED HEADRESTS DISTRACT & INTERFERE WITH MY SAFE DRIVING. THE BEST WAY TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT IN THE FIRST PLACE IS TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE WITHOUT INTERFERENCE & DISTRACTION. DURING & AFTER MY DRIVING TRIP: MY EYES WERE TIRED FROM BEING FORCED TO LOOK UPWARD CONSTANTLY TO SEE THE ROAD, INSTEAD OF BEING POSITIONED IN A NATURAL FORWARD VIEW. MY NECK WAS TIRED FROM BEING FORCED DOWNWARD, HAVING LIMITED RANGE OF MOTION AND FROM THE EXTRA FRICTION & EFFORT WHEN SUBCONSCIOUSLY ATTEMPTING TO PUT MY HEAD INTO A NATURAL HEAD POSITION, BUT BEING HINDERED BY THE SEAT WHEN I HAD TO CHECK FOR OTHER VEHICLES AT INTERSECTIONS, DURING LANE CHANGES AND SIMPLY TRYING TO LOOK FORWARD NATURALLY. I WAS DISTRACTED BY MY DISCOMFORT IN BREATHING FOR MY ENTIRE TRIP BY THE STRAIN/PRESSURE IN MY NECK/THROAT AREA THAT INTERFERED WITH MY BREATHING. I WAS DISTRACTED BY MY GLASSES SLIDING & INTERFERING WITH MY VIEW BECAUSE OF THE DOWNWARD POSITIONING OF MY HEAD. *TR
