2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

AROUND A YEAR AGO (FEB 14, 2018), I RECEIVED A MESSAGE "HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING, PLEASE STOP NOW". MY CAR SHUT DOWN AND THANK GOD, I WAS PULLING INTO MY APARTMENT COMPLEX. MY CAR WAS INSPECTED AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE TPS SYSTEM. THAT WAS REPLACED AND I WAS ON MY WAY. OVER 7 MONTHS AGO (JULY 2018), I RECEIVED THE SAME MESSAGE; "HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING, PLEASE STOP VEHICLE NOW". AFTER THE WARNING, MY CAR STOPPED IMMEDIATELY AND THIS TIME THE ROAD WAS CLEAR AND I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER THORNTON ROAD HYUNDAI INSPECTED MY CARE AGAIN, THIS TIME THEY STATED IT WAS THE MOTOR. AFTER OVER $5000 WORTH OF WORK HERE IT IS APRIL 2019 AND THE SAME WARNING. THIS TIME I WAS STRANDED ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. ONCE THE TOW TRUCK GUY GOT THERE, HE ESCORTED ME TO HIS TRUCK TO BE SAFE. I HAVE LOOKED INTO THIS WARNING OVER A YEAR AND NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW THE PROBLEM. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL AND ALL HYUNDAI DEALERS SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF WHAT THIS WARNING IS. WE AS HYUNDAI OWNERS NEED ANSWERS AND HELP. I CANNOT AFFORD TO PUT MONEY INTO A CAR WHEN THE PROBLEM IS ONLY BEING PATCHED UP.

MAJOR FAILURE OCCURRED. I WAS DRIVING MY CAR WHEN I HEARD SHARP BELLS RINGING FROM THE CAR DASH. CHECK HYBRID SYSTEMS LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON DASH. THE CAR WAS IN MOTION WHEN IT JUST STOPPED. I HAD NO TIME TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I TURNED IT OFF AND ON AGAIN. I WAS IN THE CENTER OF THE ROAD AND IT WOULD NOT MOVE. GOOD SAMARITAN PUSHED MY CAR TO SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CHECK BRAKES LIGHT CAME ON. THEN THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN ON AT ALL. THE CAR WOULD NOT RECOGNIZE THE KEY PAD LIGHT CAME ON. LOCKS WOULD NOT OPERATE. THE WINDOW WAS STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION. THE INTERNAL CAR LIGHTS WERE ON AND WOULD NOT GO OFF. THE KEY PAD COULD NOT LOCK/UNLOCK THE CAR. LUCKILY THIS HAPPENED ON A SIDE ROAD. 1 MILE EARLIER I WAS ON A FREEWAY THAT HAD NO SHOULDER. IF IT HAD HAPPENED THERE, IT COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC. NUMEROUS SYSTEMS FAILED. I TOOK IT TO THEY DEALER. THEY HAD TO WAIT FOR THE HYBRID SPECIALIST. HE SAID THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS VERY DIRTY AND ORDERED A NEW TRANSMISSION. MY QUESTION, WHY WOULD CHECK HYBRID SYSTEMS COME ON AND SO MUCH ELECTRICAL FAILURE IF IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE READ IN FORUMS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO SEVERAL OTHER HYBRID SONATA OWNERS. EVEN AFTER THE TRANSMISSION REPAIRED, I STILL FEEL VERY UNSAFE IN THE CAR NOW. IF IT HAD HAPPENED JUST 1 MILE EARLIER, MY CAR STOPPING IMMEDIATELY ON THE FREEWAY WITH NO SHOULDER COULD HAVE CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT AND BEEN LIFE-THREATENING.

LUCKILY A SHERIFF'S WAS NEARBY AND REROUTED CARS. VERY SCARY. SEEMS I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE. THIS HAPPENED WHEN I WAS GOING TO WORK AT 7:45AM AT S VERY BUSY INTERSECTION. CAR IS AT MECHANIC'S SHOP.

REPORTED ORIGINALLY IN NHTSA 11084763 WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT HIGHWAY SPEED AGAIN THE CAR DIED WITH NO WARNING WHEN THE HYBRID SYSTEM WENT OUT AND LOST ALL ACCELERATION AND ABILITY TO STEER CAR. THE CAR WOULD START BUT WOULD NOT ENGAGE IN GEAR AND WAS IN "LIMP" MODE BUT WAS UNABLE TO "LIMP" OFF THE HIGHWAY. CAR WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP AND THE ELECTRIC WATER PUMP TO COOL HYBRID SYSTEM WAS BAD BUT I HAD TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALER TWICE BEFORE TO COMPLAIN THAT THE CAR WAS NOT DRIVING OR ACCELERATING PROPERLY. I KEPT BEING TOLD THAT IT COULD NOT BE REPLICATED AND "NO CODES" ARE BEING THROWN. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM THAT HYUNDAI SHOULD FIX AND TRAIN THEIR SERVICE PEOPLE TO IDENTIFY BEFORE THE CAR JUST DIES ON THE HIGHWAY WITH NO WARNING. THIS IS THE SECOND MAJOR PROBLEM I HAVE ENCOUNTERED WITH THIS SONATA HYBRID AND IT IS SCARY WHEN A CAR JUST STOP UNEXPECTEDLY ON THE HIGHWAY WITH NO WARNING.

There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving. However, the steering wheel was shaking and making abnormal rattling sounds continuous while turning the steering wheel or driving over bumps in the roadway. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that an unknown plastic part that maintains the steering wheel in position was fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The local dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

ON 05/10/2018, I NOTICED SEVERE VIBRATION AND CLUNKING IN STEERING WHEEL. BROUGHT VEHICLE TO HYUNDAI DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE FLEXIBLE COUPLING IN THE STEERING COLUMN DUE TO WEAR. ON 08/08/2018, I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER FOR ROUTINE SERVICE AND ASKED THEM TO CHECK THE BRAKES AS I EXPERIENCED AN INTERMITTENT LOUD SQUEAKING FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL. THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. ON 09/25/2018, I ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE FROM A STATIONARY POSITION AND WHEN I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE, THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND A WARNING CAME ON THE DASH ADVISING ME THAT THE BRAKES HAD FAILED AND I NEEDED TO STOP IMMEDIATELY. I SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN ATTEMPTED TO RESTART. UPON RESTART THE WARNING CONDITION DID NOT REOCCUR. VEHICLE TOWED TO HYUNDAI DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. I WAS ADVISED THAT THE ISSUE SEEMS TO HAVE CORRECTED ITSELF AND THE BRAKE SYSTEM SIMPLY NEEDED TO BE RECALIBRATED.

APPROX 3/4 TO 1 MILE FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD I SMELT SMOKE AND SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE DRIVER WHEEL WELL AREA. I PULLED OVER STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER THE TIRE EXPLODED. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT SPRING HAD BROKEN CAUSING THE DAMAGE. THE CAR IS CASUALLY DRIVEN AND CURRENTLY HAS JUST OVER 25,000 MILES ON IT. MY HUSBAND AND I WERE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 81 SOUTH NEAR WOODSTOCK, VA ON SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE 24, 2018. THE CAR BEGAN MAKING A KNOCKING SOUND, THEN WE LOST POWER. BY THE TIME WE WERE ABLE TO PULL OVER, THE ENGINE WAS ON FIRE. THE ENTIRE CAR ENDED UP BURNING. THE VA STATE POLICE, VDOT, AND FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED AND I-81 SOUTH WAS SHUT DOWN FOR A TIME. I PURCHASED MY CAR NEW AND DID ALL REQUIRED MAINTENANCE PER FACTORY RECOMMENDATION INCLUDING OIL CHANGES, TIRE ROTATIONS, ETC. BY THE HYUNDAI DEALER IN BOWIE, MD. I HAVE COPIES OF ALL MY RECEIPTS FROM THE DEALER AND THEY HAVE THE RECORDS ON THEIR COMPUTER SYSTEM. MY CAR HAD 91,000 MILES ON IT. WE CONTACTED THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND THE CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS.

SHE CALLED ME & I TOLD HER IF IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE, TO CONTINUE DRIVING. SHE KEPT DRIVING AND THEN THE OVERHEATING LIGHT CAME ON. SHE PULLED THE CAR OVER IN LESS THAN A MINUTE. SHE CALLED ME AGAIN & I TOLD HER TO CALL HYUNDAI ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO ABRA IN BISMARCK, ND. THEY REPAIRED THE VEHICLE. THE COST WAS $9760.00. THEY WERE IN THE PROCESS OF MOVING IT FROM THE REPAIR SHOP TO THE PAINT SHOP, WHICH WAS RIGHT NEXT DOOR. THEY TURNED ON THE ENGINE & AS IT WAS SITTING THERE, IT STARTED SPEWING RADIATOR FLUID. THEY TURNED IT OFF AND TOOK THE CAR TO HYUNDAI OF BISMARCK. THEY DETERMINED THAT THE HEADS WERE WARPED AND THE ENGINE WAS DESTROYED. AFTER THE COST OF THE NEW ENGINE WAS ADDED TO THE COST OF REPAIRS, THE CAR WAS TOTALED. I DON'T THINK THAT IF A PERSON PULLS OVER WITHIN A MINUTE OF THE OVERHEATING LIGHT COMING ON. THAT IT WILL WARP THE HEADS. THE WHOLE REASON FOR THE LIGHT IS TO WARN THE DRIVER.. I BELIEVE THAT EITHER THE MOTOR WAS DEFECTIVE OR THE COMPUTER WITHIN THE VEHICLE WAS DEFECTIVE & DIDN'T COME ON EARLY ENOUGH BEFORE THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE HEADS & WAS NOT CAUSED BY THE PERSON DIRIVING. THIS INSURANCE CLAIM WENT TOO FAST AND USAA SIGNED OFF AND TOTALED THE VEHICLE JUST ON NUMBERS, NOT ON ANY INVERSTIGATION OF THE REASON WHY THE HEADS WERE WARPED AND DESTROYED THE ENGINE. THE SONATA HYBRID HAS A MAJOR FLAW AND IT'S THE GAS MILEAGE. I WAS TOLD I WOULD GET AT LEAST 45 MPG WITH SENSIBLE DRIVING AND THAT WAS A LIE. ON COLD DAMP MORNING AND AFTER A COLD FOG THERE WOULD BE CONDENSATION ALL OVER THE FRONT AND BACK WINDSHIELDS TO THE POINT WHERE WATER DROPLETS WOULD RUN ONTO THE DASHBOARDS AND BACK SEATS. ALSO THE CAR HAS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE LOW BEAM HEAD LIGHTS AT NIGHT ESPECIALLY IN THE COUNTRY. AT 50 MPH YOU OUT RUN YOUR HEAD LIGHTS AND CAN'T SEE FAR ENOUGH AHEAD OF YOU TO STOP IN TIME IF SOMETHING RUNS ACROSS IN FRONT OF YOU. *TR

FIRST REPAIR DONE AT THE DEALERSHIP ON 2/21/14 FOR DRIVERS DOOR LOCK NOT WORKING THE CAR HAD 707 MILES ON IT. I WAS GIVEN A RENTAL CAR FROM ENTERPRISE FOR THE DURATION OF THE REPAIR. THE REPAIR TOOK ONE DAY WHICH THEY REPAIRED THE "LEFT FRONT DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR LATCH ASSEMBLY". I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL STATING MY CAR WAS READY AT 5PM, BUT AS I DID NOT WANT TO DRIVE IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC I PICKED THE CAR UP THE NEXT DAY. SECOND REPAIR FOR THE SAME PROBLEM WAS ON 6/18/2014 AND THE CAR NOW HAD 5,117 MILES ON IT. I WAS GIVEN A GENESIS TO DRIVE WHILE MY CAR WAS BEING TAKEN CARE OF. I WAS PHONED TWICE THAT DAY TO SAY THEY WERE STILL LOOKING INTO MY CAR AND THEY WOULD GET BACK TO ME. AT 6PM THAT DAY THEY SAID THEY WERE STILL WORKING ON IT. THIS SERVICE INVOICE NOW SAYS THE FOLLOWING "FOUND LOOSE TERMINAL AT DOOR LATCH LOCK/UNLOCK PIN. TWEAKED (?) DOOR LATCH CONNECTOR TERMINALS AND REASSEMBLED DOOR LOCKS. DOORS WORKING NORMALLY." I PICKED MY CAR UP ON 6/20/2014. ON 6/28/2014 AT WORK WITH THE CAR NOW SHOWING 5406 MILES ON THE CLOCK IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN. I HAVE PHONED THE SAME DEALERSHIP AND INFORMED THEM I WILL BE THERE MONDAY (6/30/14) WHEN THEY OPEN AT 7AM TO HAVE THIS CAR REPAIRED AGAIN. THEY HAVE NOW HAD THE CAR FOR TWO DAYS AND I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING BACK FROM THEM. I AM NOW SUING HYUNDAI. *TR
