2014 Hyundai Tucson Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2014 Hyundai Tucson, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving 40 MPH, the vehicle started making an abnormal ticking sound. While accelerating, the sound level increased. The contact stated that the failure was related to the engine warranty extension TXXM. An independent mechanic was contacted and determined that there was an internal failure with the engine. The fluid levels were topped off; however, the sound continued while driving. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer and the dealer declined to replace the engine due to incomplete updates. The warranty was not transferred. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was purchased from Enterprise Rental Car, and the warranty was not transferred to the owner. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 134,000.

My truck started knock and losing power as I drove it. I took it to get serviced put the machine same is was a recall on the engine. I took it to the Hyundai dealership with in 2 weeks he said it was rejected by Hyundai to replace my motor. I service my car but they said I didn't. If it's a recall and not my fault.

As I was driving on 76 in Philadelphia pa my engine seized it wouldn't go over 5mph. I panicked because of the highway I was on that. I put my hazard lights on as I made my way over to the side. My car was towed to the dealership this is the 3rd engine that is being replaced. Th whole dashboard lit up prior to the engine and its still showing no recall on my car. Yet the dealership said its part of it. So now I'm waiting for a new engine once again. I just reached 72,000 miles. They did give me a loaner.

I brought my car to dealership three times in two month period time. The first time was because car wasn’t starting and I need to replace spark plugs , second time was because camshaft position sensor and now the engine has failed

NHTSA ID 11581843 · filed Apr 9, 2024

My car started to slightly jerk when beginning to drive, the next day, while crossing a very busy road, it made a loud clunking noise and harsh jerking. This happened 3 times and then subsided. I took my car to be looked at and was told I needed a brand new transmission. I have 129,000 miles on my car and never had any issues. This makes no sense! It's going to cost me $2300. The sunroof has also stopped working. This is my 3rd Hyundai, I've never had to have my transmission replaced with low miles. I work remote and live in Fl, I drive my car responsibly and never beat on it. I love Hyundai so much and my next car will be a Hyundai, but this is not right and could have caused me great harm when crossing the road. It is currently in the shop at Hyundai New Port Richey, Fl

The engine experienced catastrophic failure. A piston punctured the engine block, likely due to failure of the connecting rods, an issue known to be associated with the recalled Theta II engine. The engine is still in the vehicle and available for inspection upon request. We were scared and felt seriously endangered during the incident. The engine failed suddenly while we were driving on a busy highway. After a loud clunk, the vehicle immediately lost acceleration and would not respond to throttle input. We had to quickly pull over onto the shoulder while traffic sped past us at high speeds. The sudden loss of power in fast-moving traffic put us at serious risk of being rear-ended or causing an accident. It was a frightening experience that could have resulted in injury or worse. An independent mechanic inspected the vehicle and confirmed there is a hole in the engine block caused by a piston. We brought the vehicle to a Hyundai dealership for further inspection. Still, their communication has been poor, and they have not yet confirmed whether they acknowledge the issue or its relation to the Theta II engine recall. Our independent mechanic has inspected the vehicle and is currently with a Hyundai dealership for inspection. It has not been checked by police or insurance representatives. No third-party inspector has been involved beyond the dealer and mechanic. There were no warning lights, error messages, noises, or performance symptoms before the failure. The engine failure was sudden and occurred without any prior indication of a problem.

ADDENDUM TO COMPLAINT #10806179: DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS THAT KEEP COMING ON AND OFF AND PERMANENTLY STAYING ON ARE THE PARKING BRAKE, ABS SERVICE INDICATOR, 4WD SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT, LOW TIRE PRESSURE TELLTALE. ALL OF THESE WARNING LIGHTS TELL YOU TO BRING TO YOUR DEALER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AS SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH COULD OCCUR. I REALLY THINK THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO. THANK YOU. NOT SURE WHERE ELSE TO GO WITH THIS; HAVE SENT HYUNDAI USA AN EMAIL AS WELL. *TR

I LOOSE POWER STEERING. THE STEERING WHEEL IS SO LOOSE YOU HAVE TO HANG ONTO TO KEEP THE CAR ON THE ROAD. IT HAPPENS FREQUENTLY WHEN DRIVING OVER A STRETCH OF ROAD THAT IS BEEN PATCHED ( AND THERE ARE MANY STRETCHES LIKE THAT IN NJ) BUT THAT IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE. THERE IS NO CLEAR PATTERN TO THIS SITUATION. GENERALLY IT HAPPENS ONCE AND THEN NOT AGAIN FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS - THEN THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH COME INDICATING ISSUES WITH THE STEERING, TIRE PRESSURE AND ENGINE MALFUNCTION. FIRST GO AROUND WAS SEPT. 2014 @ 6,800 MILES. IT WAS TAKEN INTO HYUNDAI - THE TEST DROVE IT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS UNTIL THE PROBLEM OCCURRED FOR THEM. THE STEERING COLUMN (UPPER ASSEMBLY) WAS REPLACED. A YEAR GOES BY (SEPT. 2015) AND IT STARTS AGAIN @14,800 MILES. SAME PROCEDURE AS LAST YEAR - PICK VEHICLE UP AFTER 9 DAYS - 2 HOURS LATER, SAME THING, NO STEERING ALL THE LIGHTS COME. THIS TIME THE CLEANED GROUNDS. ONE WEEK LATER SAME SITUATION .DRIVING THIS VEHICLE IS EXTREMELY TENSE, MANY TIMES I HAVE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND WAIT FOR OTHERS TO PASS. AND HOPE THAT IS CORRECTS ITSELF, WHICH IT DOES SOMETIMES BUT FOR HOW LONG I NEVER KNOW.

I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN JANUARY 2014. WITHIN 500 MILE I NOTICED A STRONG VIBRATION IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION. MORE ACCURATELY IT WAS A BOUNCING (UP AND DOWN) OF THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES AND THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT VERIFIED THAT THE CONDITION EXISTED. THEY ROTATED AND BALANCE THE TIRES SEVERAL TIMES. THIS DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THEY CHANGED A DRIVE SHAFT. THIS DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THEY REPLACED MY WHEELS AND TIRES WITH A SET FROM ANOTHER 2014 TUCSON. AGAIN, NO CHANGE. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO EXHIBIT A VERY PRONOUNCED BOUNCE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH HYUNDAI AND RECEIVED A CASE NUMBER. I RETURNED TO MY DEALER AND REQUESTED TO TAKE ANOTHER 2014 HYUNDAI TUCSON FOR A TEST DRIVE. THIS VEHICLE HAD THE SAME BOUNCE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND INFORMED THEM THAT MULTIPLE TUCSONS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. HYUNDAI'S ANSWER WAS THAT IT MUST BE A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE. THAT CLOSED THE CASE AS FAR AS HYUNDAI WAS CONCERNED. I BELIEVE THIS IS AN UNSAFE "CHARACTERISTIC" AND DO NOT BELIEVE THAT HYUNDAI OR ANY OTHER MANUFACTURER WOULD DESIGN A VEHICLE WITH A BOUNCE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND CORRECTED BEFORE SOME SORT OF ACCIDENT TAKES PLACE. THIS FRONT SUSPENSION BOUNCE MAKES THE VEHICLE FEEL VERY UNSAFE IN INCLEMENT WEATHER SUCH AS RAIN, SNOW AND ICY ROAD CONDITIONS. HYUNDAI HAS CLOSED THE CASE AND REFUSES TO RE-OPEN IT OR PERFORM ANY FURTHER INVESTIGATION. THEIR DETERMINATION THAT THIS IS A VEHICLE "CHARACTERISTIC" IS BASED ON THE DRIVING OF 2 VEHICLES. I BELIEVE AN UNSAFE CONDITION LIKE THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED. HYUNDAI IS DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. *JS

The actuator malfunctioned on the back driver side door, and it is not able to be opened from the outside or inside. Poses a safety risk because passengers in the back seat behind the driver would not be able to exit the car quickly in case of emergency. There were no warning lights, went to open the door and it would not open. I have not had it inspected by a dealer. Vehicle is available for inspection if needed.

BROUGHT VEHICLE TO DEALER; GIVEN LOANER CAR FOR 9 DAYS. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2014 HYUNDAI TUCSON GLS FROM MY LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER. SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR, I NOTICED A STRONG VIBRATION THAT SEEMED TO COME FROM UNBALANCED TIRES. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR THE FIRST TIME AND THEY FOUND IT WAS UNBALANCED AND PROCEEDED TO BALANCE THE CAR. HOWEVER, THIS DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. I STILL NOTICED A SLIGHT VIBRATION WHEN I DROVE THE CAR, AND IT WAS ESPECIALLY BAD AT 50MPH. I TOOK IT BACK FOR A SECOND TIME TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER AND THEY BALANCED THE CAR AGAIN, BUT ONLY A VERY SMALL AMOUNT. AGAIN, BALANCING THE TIRES MADE NO DIFFERENCE. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER FOR A THIRD TIME AND RODE IN THE CAR WITH THE LEAD MECHANIC AT THAT LOCATION. HE ALSO NOTICED THE VIBRATION AND ASKED I LEAVE THE CAR WITH HIM. HE THEN TESTED ONE OF THE OTHER TUCSONS ON THEIR LOT THAT WAS THE SAME TRIM MODEL AND HAD THE SAME TIRES. HE REQUESTED I GO WITH HIM IN THAT CAR, AND WE FELT THE SAME VIBRATION AS IN MY CAR. HE DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE. ON COLD MORNINGS, THE CAR VIBRATES SO BADLY IT CHATTERS MY TEETH AND FEELS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. MY CONCERN IS THAT IT WILL ONLY CONTINUE GET WORSE WITH TIME, CAUSING PERMANENT DAMAGE. EVEN THOUGH THE CAR HAS A GREAT WARRANTY, I STILL FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE DRIVING IT AND AM RELUCTANT TO TAKE IT ON LONG TRIPS. I CURRENTLY HAVE A CASE OPEN WITH HYUNDAI MOTORS USA. THE CASE WAS OPENED IN MARCH OF 2014 AND HYUNDAI FEELS IT CAN BE SOLVED BY REPLACING THE TIRES. I HAVE NOT DONE THAT YET AS THEY WILL NOT GIVE ME COUPONS FOR THE FULL PRICE OF THE TIRES. THE VIBRATION HAS STARTED TO GROW NOTICEABLY WORSE AND I AM CONCERNED FOR BOTH MY SAFETY AND OTHER PEOPLE THAT MAY HAVE THE SAME CAR. *TR
