The defect: Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2022-2024 IC Bus CE, 2022-2023 IC CE SBus, IC RE, and 2023 EV school buses. The roof panel may have been manufactured with insufficient joint strength. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 221, "School Bus Body Joint Strength."
The risk: A school bus roof panel with insufficient joint strength may separate during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
The remedy: Dealers will add additional fasteners to secure the joints, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 3, 2023. Owners may contact Navistar's customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 23501.

The contact owns a 2022 IC Bus CE SBUS. The contact stated that while performing the required 90-day fleet inspections, it was observed that the brake pads were abnormally worn. The contact stated that drivers have since reported reduced stopping power among the identified affected vehicles. The contact also stated that 36 vehicles were included and had experienced the failure. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who confirmed that the brake pads were experiencing abnormal wear resulting in reduced functionality; however, the dealer was unable to provide a cause for the failure; however, the dealer hypothesized a brake line or hose failure, structural fault, and/or aggressive driving as possible causes. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 17,000.
