1991 International Harvester 3900FC Recalls

Safety recall campaigns filed with NHTSA that cover this model year

Recalls apply to specific vehicles, not to every vehicle of a model year. Check your VIN with NHTSA or your manufacturer's dealer to confirm whether a recall affects your vehicle.

Recall campaignsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

Recall campaigns

5 campaigns cover this model year — what the defect is, what it could cause, and what the remedy is

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:MOUNTING

Jul 7, 1993
10,629 units potentially affected
The defect: THE FUEL TANK CAGE ASSEMBLY BOLTS MOUNTING THE VERTICAL STRAPS TO THE HORIZONTAL ANGLE WERE ASSEMBLED WITH THE THREADED END OF THE BOLTS FACING THE FUEL TANK.
The risk: IF THE FUEL TANK CAGE IS STRUCK WITH SUFFICIENT FORCE ITIS POSSIBLE FOR THE BOLTS TO PIERCE THE FUEL TANK AND CAUSE FUEL LEAKAGE.FUEL LEAKAGE EXPOSED TO A SOURCE OF IGNITION CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
The remedy: THE FUEL TANK CAGE MOUNTING BOLTS WILL BE REMOVED AND REINSTALLED WITH THE BOLT HEAD TOWARD THE TANK.

SUSPENSION:REAR:SPRINGS:AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM

May 21, 1993
193 units potentially affected
The defect: THE PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE WAS OMITTED IN THE AIR TANK. THE AIR TANK IS THE RESERVOIR FOR THE AIR SUSPENSION AND IS NOT BRAKE RELATED. WITHOUT THE PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE, THERE IS NO BACK-UP SYSTEM TO LIMIT AIR PRESSURE IN THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM.
The risk: LACK OF A BACK-UP SYSTEM TO LIMIT AIR PRESSURE BUILD UPCAN CAUSE EXCESSIVE PRESSURE IN THE AIR TANK AND CAN CAUSE THE TANK TO RUPTURE.THIS CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY TO ANYONE IN THE VICINITY.
The remedy: INSTALL A PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE IN THE AIR TANK.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY

Jul 20, 1992
185,000 units potentially affected
The defect: THE FUEL SYSTEM FAILED THE CRASH BARRIER TEST.
The risk: THE FUEL TANK WAS PUNCTURED, RESULTING IN FLUID LOSSGREATER THAN ALLOWED BY FMVSS 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY". FUEL SPILLS INA COLLISION COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE FIRE IF EXPOSED TO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.
The remedy: MODIFY THE FUEL TANK CAGE TO COMPLY WITH FMVSS 301.

STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS

Jul 7, 1992
1,184 units potentially affected
The defect: THE POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE WAS INCORRECTLY ROUTED, AND COULD KINK AND REDUCE POWER STEERING ASSIST.
The risk: IF THE POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE KINKS AND THE POWERASSIST IS REDUCED OR LOST, IT COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL ANDAN ACCIDENT.
The remedy: INSTALL A NEW, CORRECTLY ROUTED, POWER STEERING RETURN ASSEMBLY.

STEERING: STEERING WHEEL/HANDLE BAR

Nov 27, 1991
62 units potentially affected
The defect: THE PINCH BOLT CONNECTING THE UPPER STEERING COLUMN TO THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PROPERLY TIGHTENED AND SEPARATION OF UPPER AND LOWER STEERING COLUMNS CAN OCCUR.
The risk: IF THE STEERING COLUMN SEPARATES WHILE THE BUS IS INMOTION, LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND A VEHICLE CRASH CAN OCCUR.
The remedy: TIGHTEN THE UPPER PINCH BOLT AS REQUIRED.

What a recall is

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
Safety investigation
NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Safety investigations

NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect, and it is not a recall.
