1979 International Harvester Transtar Series Recalls

Safety recall campaigns filed with NHTSA that cover this model year

Recalls apply to specific vehicles, not to every vehicle of a model year. Check your VIN with NHTSA or your manufacturer's dealer to confirm whether a recall affects your vehicle.

Recall campaignsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

Open investigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

Recall campaigns

2 campaigns cover this model year — what the defect is, what it could cause, and what the remedy is

STEERING:LINKAGES:TIE ROD ASSEMBLY

Nov 17, 1980
19,500 units potentially affected
The defect: THE NUTS WHICH FASTEN THE TIE ROD ENDS TO THE STEERING ARMS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TIGHTENED TO THE SPECIFIED 150 FT-LB TORQUE. INSUFFICIENTLY TIGHTENED TIE ROD END NUTS COULD LOOSEN, BREAK OFF THE LOCKING COTTER PIN, AND ALLOW THE TIE ROD TO DISENGAGE FROM THE STEERING ARM.
The remedy: THE DEALER WILL REMOVE THE LOCKING COTTER PIN, TIGHTEN THE NUT TO 150 FT-LBS AND REINSTALL THE COTTER PIN. BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT TIE ROD ENDS WILL BE TIGHTENED. THIS WILL BE DONE AT NO CHARGE.

SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:DRUM

Sep 18, 1979
25,000 units potentially affected
The defect: AS A RESULT OF SEVERE SHOCK AND VIBRATIONS, THE BRAKE SPIDERS ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES MAY DEVELOP CRACKS NEAR THE CAMSHAFT MOUNTING BOSS. THE CRACK PROPAGATES ACROSS THE SPIDER UNTIL THE CAMSHAFT BOSS IS COMPLETELY SEVERED FROM THE REMAINDER OF THE SPIDER. WHEN THE CAMSHAFT BOSS HAS COMPLETELY SEVERED, THE S-CAM, S-CAM BRACKET, AIR CHAMBER AND SLACK ADJUSTER CAN FALL AWAY FROM THE BRAKE SPIDER RESULTING IN A "NO BRAKE" CONDITION ON THE WHEEL.
The remedy: THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE FRONT BRAKE SPIDERS ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES USED IN SNOW PLOW DUMP AND REFUSE HAULING APPLICATIONS. THIS WILL BE DONE AT NO CHARGE.

What a recall is

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
Safety investigation
NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
