NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

What NHTSA is examining

The agency's own description of the inquiry, quoted as published

2000/2001 SUZUKI GSXR-750 TRANSMISSION

FOLLOWING A REVIEW OF THE DATA SUPPLIED BY BOTH THE PETITIONER AND THE MANUFACTURER, IT IS UNLIKELY THAT NHTSA WOULD ISSUE AN ORDER FOR THE NOTIFICATION AND REMEDY OF A SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT IN THESE VEHICLES.FOR FURTHER DETAILS, REFER TO THE FEDERAL REGISTER NOTICE DATED MARCH 5, 2003(VOLUME 68, NUMBER 43: PAGE 10574-10575).NOTE THAT THE COMPLAINT TOTAL REPRESENTS THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS DUE TO UNVERIFIABLE DUPLICATION BETWEEN THE 30 COMPLAINTS FILED WITH NHTSA AND THE 248 COMPLAINTS FILED WITH THE MANUFACTURER.

An investigation is a separate record from a recall and from a manufacturer communication. A manufacturer campaign to repair a safety defect or a failure to meet a federal safety standard.
