1992 Jeep Cherokee Transmission Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the transmission system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Transmission reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Crash reported

MY 1992 JEEP CHEROKEE HAS JUMPED FROM PARK TO REVERSE ON TWO OCCASIONS THIS YEAR. ON THE FIRST OCCASION, THE CAR SMASHED INTO MY BACK STEPS CAUSING ABOUT $500 DAMAGE TO THE STEPS AND $1250 DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. I HAD BEEN IN THE CAR AND EXITED TO RETRIEVE SOMETHING FROM THE GARAGE. THE CAR WAS IDLING IN THE DRIVEWAY WHEN SUDDENLY IT STARTED MOVING BACKWARDS TOWARD THE HOUSE. WHEN I SHUT THE CAR OFF, I FOUND THE CAR WAS IN REVERSE, NOT PARK. I WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO EXIT THE CAR IF IT HAD BEEN IN GEAR, SO I KNEW THAT SOMETHING WAS AMISS WITH THE CAR. LATER IN FEBRUARY, THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME I WAS IN THE VEHICLE WHEN IT HAPPENED AND I WAS THEREFORE ABLE TO STEP ON THE BRAKE TO STOPE THE CAR. *AK
