Complaints on fileComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Fire reported

We aren't sure what happened exactly. We drove the car 10 minutes from my house to my work, and it started smoking when she parked. The car eventually caught fire and was completely destroyed, including damage to the structure it was parked next to. USAA has the car currently. My safety was put at risk because the car spontaneously caught fire and burned itself, and nearly burned the structure. There is no way to replicate the problem, as it's a slab of melted metal and plastic. The insurance company currently has the car. I don't know if the manufacturer has inpsected it. There were no warning lights prior to it catching fire after being parked. There was a recall associated with the batteries in these Jeeps, but our battery was not part of the recall. It seems the recall should have probably included my car, but it didn't.

On January 6, 2025, one week after picking up the new vehicle from the car dealers lot I was driving on the Merritt parkway when suddenly the AEB light came on and then the traction control and engine light. The vehicle quickly lost power and even with my foot pressed fully on the gas pedal, it would not accelerate and slowed to 20 mph within seconds. Fortunately, there was no car behind me, and I was able to coast into a rest stop. If there were a vehicle behind me, it probably would’ve crashed into me when my car quickly decelerated. I turned off the car and then restarted it. I was able to drive it 3 more miles and it happened again. I pulled onto the shoulder, turned the car off and restarted it a 2nd time.

On December 8, 2024, I was driving my car and put it in reverse to back into a parking space, when the car jerked to a stop and shut down. The vehicle went into some kind of auxiliary mode and would not shut down all the way or start. I was stuck in the middle of the roadway for approximately 20-25 minutes and nothing would work to get it to start. After that 20-25 minute time period, the engine started, although the check engine light stayed on the rest of that day. the next morning, the check engine light was off.

When driving down interstate five in San Diego, my vehicle decided that it wanted to come to a screeching halt suddenly as the forward collision system activated randomly, causing my neck to jolt and a distill in pain. I had no idea what was going on, but in order to try to get out of the way of traffic, I quickly tried to override what the system was doing after coming to a complete stop, then the accelerator stuck getting the vehicle going over 100 mph. The hybrid system only shut down the gas engine, but the electric was still propelling the vehicle to go forward. I had to hit the button to turn the vehicle to gas only and shift into neutral in order for the vehicle to finally stop getting below 100 miles per hour to where I could safely pull over to the side of the road. I called Jeep and they laughed.

My Jeep start making a horrible grinding and clicking noise every time I turn the steering wheel. It sounded like the wheels would about to come off. It would shake violently going to the road. The A/C was not cooling. It felt super hot inside at all times. The passenger dash was making a rattle at all times. The transmission was jumping at low speeds. The hybrid electrical system wasn't charging. I called the dealership and they said these things were not normal for a brand new Jeep especially the top Summit Reserve. After inspection, I had two broken axles. Metal pieces in my A/C. The passenger instrument panel needed to replaced. The electrical system needed to replaced. The transmission fluid needed to be drained and recalibrated. The transmission continues to jump and jolt forward. The suspension is very shaky and rocky. The steering column and driver door still has a rattle.

On the night of [XXX], I was driving on [XXX] with my husband. I lost the ability to steer, accelerate, shift and brake the car. I was able to blast the horn or I would’ve caused a multi-car accident. Unconnect was static and jumping screens. The headlight and taillights wouldn’t stop flashing. The shifter froze up. The car showed multiple error messages, “Service Transmission Continue in D. Don’t Shift Or Turn Off Vehicle Until You Reach A Desired Location. As You May Not Be Able To Shift Again.” “Service Electronic Stability Control” “Auto Park Disabled” “Vehicle Not in Park” “Drowsy Driver Disabled” Every feature on the car disabled. I got the Jeep pulled over before I lost complete electrical, engine and battery power. Jeep Roadside Assistance would not come get us. USAA Insurance had to make two trips since the car couldn't go in neutral and had no power. They towed it to the nearest dealership. The dealership put in a new battery but that didn't work. They ran diagnostics. The valve body is faulty and shorting out which isn't allowing the car to start. This part is on backorder and will not be available for weeks. I'm waiting a month for a new part in hopes that solves the first issue. Then we see what diagnostics says about the remaining problems. I was moments away from dying along with countless others on the busiest Interstate in Texas. Jeep brand isn’t providing safety and reliability. This is a brand new vehicle that came from the factory with faulty parts. Jeep has already settled a Class Action for this same issue on the 2021-2023 Wrangler. The contact owns a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving 60-70 MPH, the instrument panel became inoperable and was no longer illuminated. The failure caused the Back Over Prevention camera, Lane Departure Assist, and other safety systems within the vehicle to be inoperable. The instrument panel was flickering and illuminated; however, there were times when the system had to be restarted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, the cause of the failure could not be determined. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 34,000.

Vehicle acceleration stops at high altitudes which causes the vehicle to suddenly maintain lower gear and speeds while driving on interstate/highway. Vehicle had accelerator replaced by delearship at 1,406 miles, however the issue continued. Dealership is now replacing turbocharger engine after reporting failure at 3,500 miles.

Upon having the baseplate to tow this vehicle behind our motorhome, it was discovered the bolts to attach the bumper plate to the rightaide frame of the vehicle were missing. The dealer furnished the required bolts for proper installation. In my opinion the crash safety of the vehicle was compromised by not having adequate connections.

1) Car shuts off automatically when driving. The only option to start engine again is to shut off the engine and restart. 2) Car hesitate when gas engine is communicating with electric battery. Car acts like it is is neutral for about 5 seconds The both issues listed above creates a serious safety risk as there is no option to accelerate while driving on a highway or city street. It creates a safety risk for my family and drivers that are behind me since other drivers have to come to an abrupt stop. The engine turned off while I was driving my daughters to school and we came within inches of being hit by a tractor trailer. That is why I am writing this message. This is a serious safety risk and I do not trust this vehicle. I took the car back to the dealership and I was told that the issue is a characteristics of a hybrid. They were not able to replicate the issue but they are aware of the issue since others customers had the same complaint. The engine shut off and engine stall happened 3 more times after this visit so I am now going back to see what options I have to get out of this lease. The episodes happened so fast that I do not recall if a warning light came on. It is a very scary moment when you have your family in the car and the engine shuts off for no reason. Fortunately there has been no accident YET but as mentioned I am going to try my best to get out of this lease.

This is a followup to complaints 11574396 & 11574483. I was advised by service that the vehicle passed an inspection and it was ready for pickup. I went to the service department to pick up the vehicle. The service manager advised me that the vehicle was properly wired, and that he believed the problems that I have experienced were resolved through software updates. He also advised me that he believed the issue of the vehicle not accelerating past 29 mph was due to the vehicle being placed into manual mode through the vehicle's paddle shifters, because 29 mph is the limitation for 1st gear. I advised him that I never used the paddle shifters, but he insisted that I must have hit them by accident. He also advised me that in the event the vehicle enters manual mode, I can exit that mode by holding down the right paddle. I took back possession of the vehicle and began to drive home. I did not even make it half a mile before the vehicle once again began to experience serious malfunctions. The engine once again shut off while driving. I pulled onto the swale. Once again, the "D" was blinking on both the shifter knob and the driver info panel screen. There were numerous error messages and icons displayed. This included the check engine light, battery warning light, check hybrid electrical system light and warning (wrench with lightning bolt), and service electronic stability control warning. The vehicle also stated that the auto emergency braking system was engaged in active braking, despite the fact I was not near any other vehicle or object. There were other warning messages that displayed but that cycled through too quickly for me to read or photograph them. After restarting the car, once again, the vehicle would not accelerate past 29 mph. The screen showed the vehicle was in manual mode, in 1st gear. I could not return to manual mode. The service manager has indicated that engineering technicians must be brought in.

Last night, an incident occurred, which was previously reported to NHTSA. This morning, while driving to the dealership to address that incident, the vehicle's engine turned off while driving in hybrid/gas mode. The "D" was blinking on both the shifter and on the driver information panel. I was able to turn the shifter knob to put the vehicle into neutral, reverse, and park, but there was no change in vehicle behavior. Putting the shifter back in drive did nothing, and the car remained inoperable. All the while, the infotainment system remained on. Eventually I was able to restart the engine and drive. During the resulting drive to the dealership, which was done in hybrid/gas mode, the vehicle would not accelerate past 29 mph. The engine would sound normal until reaching approximately 28 mph, at which point it sounded like the engine was cutting off, and then acceleration would cease at 29 mph no matter how much the gas pedal was pressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealership. I have been informed that they are looking into the source of the various problems reported here and in a previous report. I was informed that a diagnostic test revealed nearly 50 error codes. Several photos and videos were recorded.

This report involves a vehicle that was leased new from a dealership less a week ago. This vehicle has barely 200 miles on the odometer. While driving in electric mode, the engine completely shut off. The car shifted into park in the middle of traffic. I couldn’t shift it out of park — not even into neutral to push the car off the street. The screen was telling me to press the brake and the start button, as if I was starting the engine. But doing those things did nothing. I couldn’t start the engine, and I also couldn’t turn the car off. The infotainment system was still running. Eventually, the passenger opened the door, which caused the car to turn off. From there I was able to restart the engine. I then drove home in hybrid/gas mode. The check engine light was on the entire ride back, and it remains on the next day. One other thing. In the few days I’ve had this car, there have already been 5 or 6 times where electric mode shuts off while I’m driving, even if I still have battery left, and the car shifts into hybrid/gas mode. A message will appear telling me that electric mode is temporarily unavailable. When that happens, I have to wait several minutes to try to put electric mode back on, otherwise it won’t work.
