THE WHEEL END STUDS WERE IMPROPERLY TEMPERED, POTENTIALLY RENDERING THEM BRITTLE AND SUSCEPTIBLE TO FRACTURE. IF ONE WHEEL STUB FRACTURES, THE REMAINING WHEEL STUDS ARE REQUIRED TO CARRY MORE LOAD.
