2011 Kaufman Flatbed Recalls

Safety recall campaigns filed with NHTSA that cover this model year

Recalls apply to specific vehicles, not to every vehicle of a model year. Check your VIN with NHTSA or your manufacturer's dealer to confirm whether a recall affects your vehicle.

Recall campaignsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

The defect: Kaufman Trailers of NC, Inc. and Kaufman Trailers of NE, Inc. (Kaufman) is recalling certain model year 2011 flatbed trailers equipped with 10,000 lb. electrically-braked, oil bath axles. The wheel end caps on the oil bath axles can leak due to a cracked cap or a damaged O-ring.
The risk: The oil may leak out of the wheel end caps and if the condition is not corrected, the loss of oil could result in unexpected wheel bearing failure which may increase the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Kaufman will notify owners and will replace the affected wheel end caps and o-rings free of charge. The recall began on September 14, 2012. Owners may contact Kaufman Trailers at 1-866-444-8971.

What a recall is

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
Safety investigation
NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Safety investigations

NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect, and it is not a recall.

Closed Oct 11, 2012

On June 14, 2012 the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE12-014) to assess the risks associated with wheel-end failures causing wheel separation on certain Model Year (MY) 2011 Kaufman Flatbed Trailers.Following discussions with ODI concerning manufacturer records, consumer complaints, interviews, and the risk to the public resulting from a wheel separation event, Kaufman decided to submit recall notice 12V-410 on the subject trailers. This recall decision was made prior to submitting its response to ODI's information request letter, and ODI believes it has sufficient information to close its investigation. Therefore ODI relieved Kaufman of its requirement to submit a response.Kaufman's recall actions address the issues raised by this investigation and as a result this investigation is closed.
