2010 Kia Forte Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Kia Forte, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

The contact owns a 2010 Kia Forte with a five-speed transmission. The contact received notifications for NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V363000(Air Bags) and NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V652000(Service Brakes, Hydraulics), as well as other manufacturer recalls. The contact made an appointment at a dealer and had the vehicle serviced for the recalls. The contact had to make a second appointment as not all parts were available for the initial appointment. After the contact's second appointment, all recall services were performed, and she was informed that a five-point inspection was also performed on the vehicle. Upon leaving the dealer, the contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, the vehicle's clutch failed without warning. Due to the failure, the contact was unable to downshift the vehicle and was forced to use her emergency brake to stop the vehicle. The contact sustained severe emotional distress as a result of the failure, as it nearly resulted in an accident. With the assistance of a fellow motorist, the vehicle was towed to her home since the dealer was closed. The contact later called the dealer and had the vehicle towed back to the dealer. Once the vehicle was inspected, the contact was informed that the cabin filter and two front tires needed to be replaced; the contact was also informed that she would need a wheel alignment. The contact declined the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired and remained in the dealer's possession. The failure mileage was approximately 167,000.

On August 22nd 2025 my daughter was driving this vehicle and was in a car accident and her front air bags did not deploy. Her passenger side airbags deployed with no passenger but nothing in the front and it was a front collision. Upon receipt of the Paperwork from Copart we learned there was an active recall from 2018 for the front airbags possibly not deploying and resulting in injury during a collision, which is what happened. Her knee and ribs were injured from hitting the steering wheel. The car was declared a total loss from insurance.

EXTREME DRY ROT TO A 3.5 YEAR OLD TIRE. TIRE LEAKS AIR. YOKOHAMA ALSO REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING.

NHTSA ID 11253714 · filed Sep 6, 2019

I HAVE HAD 3 TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR STEMS CRACK AND DISAPPEAR INTO THE TIRE CAUSING A FLAT AT 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE FIRST TIME WAS AT 38,000 MILES, THE LAST 2 WERE AT 76,000 AND WITHIN A WEEK OF EACH OTHER. I CALLED KIA BUT THEY STATED I HAVE TO HAVE KIA EXAMINE THEM. THE FIRST TIME KIA TOLD ME THAT THIS JUST HAPPENS AND CHARGED ME $200. I WENT TO MAVIS TIRE THE 2ND TIME AND THEY REPLACED IT FOR $83. I CALLED KIA TODAY AFTER THE 3RD TIME AND THEY TOLD ME TO GO TO THE DEALER. *TR

The contact owns a 2010 Kia Forte. The contact stated the vehicle was taken to a dealer for several recall repairs, and repair under Manufacturer Recall Number: SC165A. After the recall repairs were performed, while driving approximately 60 MPH on the highway with the clutch engaged and the vehicle in gear, the vehicle started jerking and unexpectedly decelerated. The contact moved over to the side of the road, and the vehicle became inoperable. The vehicle was first towed to the residence and then to the dealer for inspection. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired; however, the contact was advised by the dealer that the failure was due to normal wear and tear. However, the contact believed that the failure was caused by the recall repair under Manufacturer Recall Number: SC165A. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 157,000.

PULLING OUT DRIVE WAY GOING TO THE LEFT FELT LIKE PASSENGER WHEEL WAS LOCKING UP AND DOES IT QUITE A BIT. ALSO NTB IN CLEVELAND, TN SAID THERE WAS LOTS WRONG WITH UNDER NEATH , ALSO IT STILL FEELS LIKE IT'S RUNNING AFTER BEING CUT OFF. AND IT HAS A RIM THAT IS CRACKED AND WHEN I GOT IT I THOUGHT IT NEEDED TIRES CAUSE I HAD TO AIR TIRE EVERY DAY OR SO BUT NOW IT'S MORE THAN A FEW TIMES DAILY AND I JUST LEARNED HOW UNSAFE THAT IS TO BE DRIVING FOR MY KIDS AND I BUT FOR OTHERS AS WELL

NHTSA ID 11416288 · filed May 12, 2021

I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A RECALL ON 03/01/2019, THEY CHANGED TIRE VALVE STEMS AND ACU EXTENSION. WHEN THEY FINALLY FINISHED WORKING ON MY CAR. I LEFT AND WAS DRIVING HOME SO I TOOK THE 60 FREEWAY AND WHILE I WAS ON THE FREEWAY MY CAR STARTED SHAKING AND I ALMOST LOST CONTROL AND A CAR ALMOST HIT ME BECAUSE OF THAT. I COMPLAINED TO THE SERVICE MANAGER ABOUT WHAT HAD JUST HAPPENED TO MY CAR. THE MANAGER LATER COMES TO ME AND TELLS ME THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO CRACKED TIRES AND THAT'S WHY MY TIRE WENT FLAT BUT I TOLD THE MANAGER THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE SINCE MY TIRES ARE IN GOOD CONDITION AND ALSO IF MY TIRES WERE ALL CRACKED THEN WHY DID ONLY ONE TIRE LOSE AIR AND NOT ALL OF THEM? ALSO THE SERVICE ADVISOR MENTIONED TO ME THAT SAME MORNING THAT THE TECHNICIAN WASN'T ABLE TO OPEN THE HOOD TO MY CAR AND I FOUND THAT VERY WEIRD SINCE A WEEK PRIOR TO THAT I HAD OPENED THE HOOD TO MY CAR WITH NO PROBLEM AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. I WENT TO THE MECHANIC TODAY AND THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THE TIRE THEY GAVE ME WAS A CHEAP BRAND TIRE AND MY TIRES WERE NOT CRACKED AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY HOOD, WHEN THE MECHANIC OPENED THE HOOD HE FOUND THAT THE MOTOR COVER WAS COMPLETELY CRACKED IN HALF. I BELIEVE THE TECHNICIAN SOMEHOW CRACKED IT IN HALF WHILE CHECKING MY CAR AND LIED AFTERWARDS AND MADE THAT STATEMENT ABOUT THE HOOD NOT OPENING, I HAD TO PURCHASE A NEW MOTOR COVER. THE MANAGER WAS LYING AND COVERING FOR THE MISTAKES HIS TECHNICIAN MADE. THE MECHANIC MADE A NOTATION ON MY RECEIPT AND AGREED WITH ME ABOUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE DEALERSHIP WAS LYING TO COVER FOR THE MISTAKES THE TECHNICIAN MADE. I WAS VERY DISSATISFIED WITH THE LIES THEY MADE UP ABOUT MY CAR TO COVER UP THEIR MISTAKES, THE POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE GIVEN TO ME AND THE NEGLIGENCE THEY SHOWED ME ESPECIALLY SINCE MY SAFETY WAS AT JEOPARDY SINCE I ALMOST CRASHED AFTER THEY WORKED ON MY CAR.

NHTSA ID 11747096 · filed Jun 29, 2026

There is an ongoing issue with the MAP sensor that triggers a check engine light as well as the RPMS to fluctuate. This can happen when disconnecting the battery and/or replacing the MAP sensor. I replaced the MAP sensor and still get this ongoing issue. This is a safety concern because due to the RPMs constantly fluctuating, the car jolts forward when driving which could possibly result to the car hitting another vehicle in front of it. But the only way to get it to stop / get the check engine light to turn off, is to drive it for x amount of miles until it fixes itself. This problem has been inspected by Kia themselves and they did not give any information to me about the issue. This issue seems to happen any time I get the vehicle serviced.

The car is 15 yrs old but over the years have had to replace the brake light bulb harness several times The brake light bulbs get too hot thus melting the bulb receptacle causing the brake lights not to illuminate. Have had vehicles come up behind me several times way too close for comfort because brake lights not working .

Headlights have become very yellow and cracking formed on them. This effects evening /night time driving and you see ads to purchase cleaners that I have tried and it has done nothing. Not sure why this has not been remedied or made a recall to replace these as defective materials or what one can do to solve this with positive results or recommendations people can do with out equipment. This seems to be a big problem with a lot of vehicles mine included. Thx you for listening and thought I would report this issue as another safety concern

From owner reports, verbatim

MY 2010 KIA FORTE EX SEDAN, 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC HAS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM THAT COULD DEFINITELY LEAD TO INJURIES OR DEATH. THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM THAT CAN HAPPEN ANY TIME, BUT MOSTLY OCCURS DURING OR AFTER GOING UP A SIGNIFICANT HILL, BUT MAY HAPPEN ON LEVEL GROUND. THERE'S 23,000 MILES ON MY KIA AND IT'S UNDER FULL WARRANTY. I TOOK THIS TO THE DEALER, THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM OR DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM; THEY SUGGESTED FLUSHING THE TRANSMISSION FOR $150, SO I DID THAT. IT DID NOT HELP. IT STOPPED FOR ABOUT A WEEK, THEN IT STARTED SEIZING UP AGAIN, TODAY (3/10/2011) IT SEIZED TWICE ON MY WIFE. WHAT IT DOES IS NOT ACTUALLY STOP THE CAR, BUT "FREEZE" YOU AT ONE SPEED, TYPICALLY EITHER 20MPH OR 45-50MPH IT TAKES UP TO 30 SECONDS TO SHIFT, AND IF YOU ARE PULLING OUT IN FRONT OF TRAFFIC AND IT SEIZES AND WON'T LET YOU GO BEYOND 10-20MPH IT'S VERY DANGEROUS. THE DEALER SAYS THEY WON'T HAVE A REPLACEMENT LOANER UNTIL NEXT WEEK, SO WE'LL WAIT. I'M IN NORTHERN UT. IT'S HAPPENING IN DRY WARM (50-60 DEGREE) WEATHER. WE HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE CAR SEVERELY, THIS SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT HAPPEN. THE KIA OWNER'S MANUAL SAYS TO INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AT 40,000 AND ONLY CHANGE THEN IF NEEDED, SO THE VERY EXPENSIVE FLUID SHOULD BE GOOD. THIS IS SOME UNIQUE FLUID YOU HAVE TO BUY FROM THE DEALER, NORMAL AUTO PARTS STORES DON'T HAVE IT. OTHER DRIVERS ARE REPORTING THIS WITH THE KIA FORTE EX ALSO ( HTTP://WWW.KIA-FORUMS.COM/KIA-FORTE-CERATO-TD-KOUP-DISCUSSION/56086-NEW-TRANSMISSION-NEEDED-6900-MILES.HTML). I AM CONCERNED ABOUT OUR SAFETY WHILE DRIVING A CAR I CAN'T PREDICT WHEN IT WILL SEIZE UP AND NOT SHIFT. LETTING YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS DOES NOT HELP. IT DOES HAVE TO BE WELL WARMED UP TO HAVE THIS DIFFICULTY, AT LEAST 10 MINUTES OF DRIVING. THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! *TR
