1997 Lincoln Town Car Airbags Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the airbag system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Airbags reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Crash reported

The contact owns a 1997 Lincoln Town Car. The contact stated while driving at 40 MPH, another vehicle crashed into the front passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle that crashed into the contact was driving at approximately 55 MPH. The air bags failed to deploy. There were no injuries reported. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The contact had a second accident, and the air bags did not deploy during that incident. The dealer stated that the air bags could not be replaced because the vehicle was an older model, and the VIN was not under a recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 154,000.

SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE THE HORN WAS INOPERABLE. THE DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED IT WAS BLOWN OUT AND FIXED IT AT NO CHARGE. NOW THE HORN SOUNDS OFF AT ANY GIVEN TIME. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS EXPLAINED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN WOULD HAVE TO BE PULLED OUT IN ORDER TO GET TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM. CONSUMER ISOLATED THE PROBLEM HIS SELF AND FOUND IT WAS A SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE STEERING WHEEL PAD COVER. TO REPLACE THE HORN SWITCH, CONSUMER NEEDS THE ENTIRE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY. THE DEALER WILL NOT SUPPORT THE REPLACEMENT OF THE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY. CONSUMER FEELS THE THAT THERE WAS A DEFECT ALREADY DUE TO THE HORN INITIALLY BEING BURNED OUT. *JG

I HAVE RECEIVED AUTHORIZATION FROM NHTSA TO HAVE AN ON-OFF SWITCH FOR THE DRIVER AIR BAG ON 03-02-98. BOB RIDINGS LINCOLN DEALER IN TAYLORVILLE, IL HAS ORDRED THIS SWITCH AND AS OF 06-07-99 HAS NOT BEEN RECEIVED. I AM A 64 YEAR OLD FEMALE DRIVER, 4'8" TALL AND AM IN VERY HIGH RISK OF LIFE-THREATENING INJURY SHOULD THIS AIR BAG BE DEPLOYED. I HAVE INVESTIGATED THIS SITUATION AND FOUND THAT FORD MOTOR CO WILL NOT RELEASE THIS SWITCH TO BE SHIPPED BY THEIR PACKAGING COMPANY PACK-RITE , PHONE 313-388-6400. THE PART NO. IS F8DZ14B385KC. A HUGH BAKER OF PACK-RITE ADVISED ME THAT FORD WOULD NOT RELEASE THIS SWITCH. I HAVE HAD MY CONGRESSMAN WRITE, AS OF APRIL 30, 199, AND TO DATE BOB RIDINGS IN TAYLORVILLE HAS NOT RECEIVED THIS SWITCH. (WORDEN-MARTIN WILL NOT INSTALL THESE SWITCHES) I AM VERY DESPERATE TO OBTAIN THIS SWITCH AND HAVE INSTALLED AND I SINCERELY HOPE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ASSIST ME AND EXPEDITE THE SHIPMENT OF SAME. THANK YOUFOR YOUR ASSISTIANCE.
