The defect: Mack is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 CHU and CXU vehicles, manufactured from October 13, 2006, through December 23, 2009 and equipped with daytime running lights and fog lights. A short in the fog light circuit may cause the low beam headlight circuit to cut out.
The risk: If the low beam headlights go out, the driver may lose visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Mack will notify owners, and install an additional wiring harness on the affected vehicles, free of charge. The safety recall began on November 14, 2012. Owners may contact Mack Trucks at 1-800-866-1177.

TRAILER HITCHES:FIFTH WHEEL ASSEMBLY

The defect: ON CERTAIN TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH A SAF HOLLAND SIMPLEX FIFTH WHEEL, THE LEVER ARM PIVOT BOLT MAY HAVE BEEN OVER TIGHTENED. AN OVER TIGHTENED PIVOT BOLT CAN DISTORT THE PIVOT BOLT SPACER SLEEVE, WHICH MAY PREVENT THE FIFTH WHEEL LATCH JAW FROM CLOSING AND LATCHING SECURELY AROUND THE TRAILER KING PIN.
The risk: THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE PIVOT BOLT CAN BECOME LOOSE WITHOUT THE DRIVER'S KNOWLEDGE. WHEN THIS OCCURS, THE DRIVER COULD DRIVE AWAY AND THE TRAILER COULD BECOME DISENGAGED, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PIVOT BOLT AND SLEEVE WITH A HEX HEAD SHOULDER BOLT AND WASHER FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 28, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MACK TRUCKS AT 1-800-528-6586.

The defect: ON CERTAIN TRUCKS, THE NUT THAT RETAINS THE STEERING WHEEL MAY NOT HAVE BEEN INSTALLED.
The risk: IF THE RETAINING NUT WAS NOT INSTALLED, THE STEERING WHEEL MAY COME OFF, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE HORN BUTTON TO CONFIRM THAT THE RETAINING NUT WAS INSTALLED. A RETAINING NUT WILL BE ADDED IF THE NUT IS MISSING. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 12, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MACK TRUCKS AT 800-866-1177.

Safety recall

Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
