2021 Mazda CX-30 Brakes Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

On June 3rd, 2026, about 1:15 PM, I braked in the rain because there was a stopped car in front of me. The brakes did not work; the Automatic Emergency brakes did not work; the Forward Collision Warning did not work and I hit the car in front of me causing a 3 car accident. As I hit the car I saw the Forward Collision Warning come on and then go out. Unfortunately, the brakes worked after that and the Mazda Collision Center cannot find anything wrong with the brakes. I note that the 2022 and 2023 models of the same car did have recalls related to the brakes. The claim is still open and I have not yet received the final damage report. Yesterday I was told the revised estimate is $16,000 and my car and the middle care with front and rear and damage are considered totaled.

The contact owned 2021 Mazda CX-30. The contact stated while attempting to park the vehicle in the parking garage at her workplace, the contact reversed and then straightened the steering wheel; however, after shifting to drive and attempting to drive 6-10 feet forward into the parking space, the vehicle unintendedly accelerated and crashed into a pillar before coming to a stop. The contact stated that the engine had revved up, and the vehicle made an abnormally loud sound before the vehicle unintendedly accelerated. The contact stated that the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to respond, and the vehicle failed to stop as needed. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the air bags deployed as intended; however, a warning light indicating an air bag malfunction illuminated afterwards. The contact stated that the front driver's side and knee air bags had deployed as designed. The contact sustained pain and bruises on the left side of the chest, on the upper part of the left breast, on the left leg, and on the right wrist and right arm. The vehicle automatically called 9-1-1 for Emergency Assistance, but the contact declined to receive medical assistance. The contact was able to walk away from the scene. No Police report was filed. The contact was unsure whether there was any property damage. The vehicle was towed from the scene and totaled by the Insurance Company. The contact stated that the failure had occurred once before while driving at approximately 60-65 MPH, and the vehicle unintendedly accelerated with an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle, but the contact was able to depress the brake pedal and regained control of the vehicle. The dealer and the manufacturer were not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.

The accident occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 14, which I reported to Enterprise, City of Falls Church, on the morning of November 15. Additionally, I provided to Enterprise email links to the many reports about breaking problems about the CX30 2021, 2022, and 2023 MAZA models and the reasons for their recall for repair. Here are the details about what happened. As I was trying to put the car in reverse from a standing position, the car, instead, lurched forward at great speed headed toward the Sun Trust bank. I had to use super-human strength to the brake pedal on the car to force it into a standing position. The damage to the car is due to scrapping some bark off one of the trees that separates the Sun Trust Bank property from the CapitalOne bank property where my car was parked.

On March 9, 2023 - car brakes failed at a red light and vehicle collided with an oncoming car coming from the adjacent direction. Vehicle proceeded not to brake for an additional 30 sec minum at which the brakes finally engaged. There was no braking alert - the smart braking system did not engage and there was Forward Collision warning. It is available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of oncoming passengers were at risk which could have been fatal Insurance representatives have not yet inspected. Absolutely no warning lots engaged.

The automatic braking engaged without warning and without cause. There was nothing directly in front of the car that was a possible collision threat. I suffered a neck injury as a result of the force in which the car stopped. Fortunately the driver behind me was able to stop. The car was taken to the original Mazda dealer and I was told this is a problem with my car but that they had no permanent fix, nor the ability to permanently shut off this system available until "corporate got back to them." They did not provide any paperwork and stated "we will call you when we have something." I now have a car I am scared to drive.

The contact owns a 2021 Mazda CX-30. The contact stated that while at a stop sign, the vehicle was bouncing up and down. The contact mentioned that the failure recurred multiple times and only while the vehicle was stopped. The dealer was contacted but was unable to provide a diagnosis. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. In addition, while driving at approximately 8 mph, the brake assist warning light illuminated, and the brake assist applied independently while there was nothing in front of the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 3,500. As of November 5, 2021 the mileage was noted as 6,301 by Manchester Mazda. The vehicle would start bouncing up and down and moving forwards and backwards while stopped at a stop light and this occurred multiple times shortly after the purchase, within a month of purchase and randomly continued up to the point of the following issue. Consumer had shut off the brake assist every time she was driving there have been no more incidences. In addition, having the winter tires put on stopped the incident from recurring.
