2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

There is an ongoing issue with the front and rear air shocks. They don't inflate properly. Sometimes they inflate and sometimes they don't. This is a risk because my suspension system is not stable. The problem has been confirmed by Astorg Mercedes-Benz. Yes, the problem has been inspected by an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership. There was no indication beit warning lamps, messages, etc., before the issue happened.

THE MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO PROVIDE ME WITH THE MAIN FUSE BOX CHART.

NHTSA ID 11612340 · filed Sep 3, 2024

My car has this issue that when I am slowing down it will automatically shift to park and will not let me shift to drive until I turn the car off and on. When rolling to a stop, I've had a few instances where the car shifts to park and the car behind me almost hits me due to the car shifting on its own and not allowing me to proceed with the flow of traffic. This puts not only me, but the person behind me at risk. I took the car to a mechanic and he stated that there was no recall for this issue but that I should contact you (NHTSA). The mechanic stated that the component that might be failing is the electrical ignition switch, basically telling the car that there is no key in the ignition. There are no warning lights or any other indication. This has happened to me a multiple times. When this happens, since I am not at a complete stop, it shifts to park and grinds my transmission. This causes the car to abruptly stop without having my foot on the brake to warn the drivers behind me.

THE INCIDENT OCCURRED ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14, 2015 AT 8:00 AM EST. I WAS TRAVELING ON INDIANA HIGHWAY. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AS I WAS LISTENING TO THE RADIO WHILE DRIVING THE SPEED LIMIT OF 70 MILES PER HOUR. AS I WAS DRIVING, ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION. I SWERVED TO THE LEFT IN THE VEHICLE BECAUSE I WAS UNSURE WHAT THE EXPLOSION WAS OR CAME FROM. AS SOON AS I HEARD THE EXPLOSION, THICK PIECES OF GLASS FELL FROM THE SUNROOF. LARGE PIECES OF GLASS FELL ON THE BACK SEAT. GLASS FELL ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AS WELL AS PIECES OF GLASS FELL ON MY SHOULDERS AND ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE FLOOR. I LOOKED AROUND MY SURROUNDING TO DETERMINE WHERE THE NOISE COULD HAVE CAME FROM. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF OUTSIDE FORCES. I WAS VERY NERVOUS, THIS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE. I PULLED OVER AT THE NEXT EXIT AND EVALUATED MY VEHICLE. I WAS IN AMAZED BECAUSE THE SUNROOF HAD A WHOLE THE SIZE OF A BASKETBALL. I CALLED THE NEAREST MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. THE ONLY APPOINTMENT THEY HAD AVAILABLE WAS FOR FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 2015. ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 2015 I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO MERCEDES BENZ AND ALSO CONTACTED HEADQUARTERS TO FILE A COMPLAINT. THIS INCIDENT WAS NOT CAUSED BY MY ACTIONS, NOR EXTERNAL FACTORS BUT THE MANUFACTURING OR DESIGN DEFECT OF THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE CONDUCTED FURTHER INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER AND HAVE EVIDENCE OF OTHER MERCEDES BENZ OWNERS WHOM THIS SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. I SPOKEN WITH MERCEDES BENZ REGIONAL MANAGER [XXX] ON JANUARY 27, 2015. SHE STATED MERCEDES BENZ WILL GIVE ME $1,000 TOWARDS THE REPAIR IF I SIGN A WAIVER NOT TO SUE. I REJECTED THIS OFFER BECAUSE THERE IS A DEFECT IN MERCEDES BENZ VEHICLES. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).' *TR

IN JUNE 2011, I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 55 MPH WHEN THE WINDSHIELD CRACKED AND BROKE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, IN THE CORNER, ABOUT MIDWAY BETWEEN THE TOP AND THE BOTTOM. AT TIME OF THE BREAK, THERE WAS AN IMPACT SOUND, AS IF A PEBBLE HAD HIT THE WINDSHIELD, BUT I DIDN'T SEE ANY OBJECT. THE WINDSHIELD WAS REPLACED ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER. IN OCTOBER 2011, THE WINDSHIELD BROKE AGAIN IN JUST ABOUT THE SAME SPOT ON THE WINDSHIELD, UNDER THE SAME DRIVING CONDITIONS, THIS TIME IN A DIFFERENT STATE. IT JUST SEEM LIKE AN UNLIKELY COINCIDENT. COULD THERE BE A DEFECT IN THE GLASS? *TR

AT 80MPH, THE FRONT DRIVESHAFT U-JOINT FAILED, WHICH CAUSED A LOSS OF POWER AND A LOUD CLUNKING SOUND. VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE ON ITS OWN POWER. TEARDOWN SHOWED A COMPLETELY DESTROYED FRONT DRIVESHAFT U-JOINT, DAMAGE TO HEAT SHIELDING, DAMAGE TO OXYGEN SENSORS, DAMAGE TO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, ALONG WITH SUPERFICIAL DAMAGE TO THE BELLHOUSING AND MISSING BRACKETS. FAILURE IS SUSPECTED TO THE GEOMETRY OF THE FRONT DRIVESHAFT, WHICH CONNECTS AT AN ANGLE FROM THE TRANSFER CASE TO THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL ON 4MATIC-EQUIPPED VEHICLES. THIS INTRODUCES ADDITIONAL STRESS TO THE U-JOINT, MAKING IT PRONE TO FAILURE.

I PROCURED THE VEHICLES 32,000 MILES AS A CPO. IT HAD NEW BRAKE ROTORS ON IT. OVER THE NEXT 75,000 MILES THE BRAKE ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED 7 TIMES FOR WARPING AND DANGEROUSLY INCREASING STOPPING DISTANCES. THIS APPARENTLY NOT UNUSUAL FOR THIS VEHICLE.
