The defect: A STEEL TUBE THAT DELIVERS AIR TO THE FRONT AXLE AIR BRAKE CHAMBER CAN CONTACT THE FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: REPEATED CONTACT CAN WEAR A HOLE IN THE TUBE, CAUSING AIR PRESSURE TO BE LOST DURING BRAKE APPLICATION. THIS COULD RESULT IN IMPAIRED BRAKING CAPABILITY AND AN ACCIDENT.
The remedy: REROUTE STEEL TUBE AND/OR REPLACE, AS NECESSARY.

The defect: SOME OF THE BOLTS ATTACHING THE BRAKE ASSEMBLY TO THE AXLE MAY FRACTURE WITHOUT WARNING. IF ONE OR MORE OF THESE BOLTS FRACTURE, IT MAY RESULT IN REAR BRAKE ASSEMBLY DAMAGE AND BRAKE INEFFECTIVENESS ON THE REAR AXLE.
The remedy: THE THREE LONG BOLTS IN EACH BRAKE ASSEMBLY WILL BE INSPECTED FOR A CODE NUMBER, AND BOLTS WILL BE REPLACED AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNER.

SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:DRUM:CHAMBER

The defect: BECAUSE THE AIR BRAKE CHAMBERS ARE LOCATED ABOVE THE REAR AXLE HOUSING, THE AIR HOSE, WHICH FITS ON TOP OF THE CHAMBERS, COULD COME IN CONTACT WITH THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BODY.
The remedy: AIR CHAMBERS WILL BE REPOSITIONED IN ORDER TO LOWER THE FITTINGS. IN ADDITION, AXLE STOPS WILL BE INSTALLED (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF VEHICLES WITH 5900 MM WHEEL BASE) IN ORDER TO ENSURE MINIMUM UPWARD TRAVEL OF THE AXLE.

NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
