2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

TAKATA RECALL -- I CONTINUE TO GET POSTCARDS AND/OR EMAILS FROM MERCEDES BENZ REGARDING THE NHSTA RECALL #16V077. THE LATEST EMAIL CAME TODAY. BUT I HAD THE RECALL WORK DONE ON AUGUST 24, 2018. APPARENTLY MERCEDES BENZ DOES NOT KNOW THAT THE RECALL HAS BEEN PERFORMED, EVEN THOUGH THE MERCEDES BENZ DEALER WHO PERFORMED THE RECALL WORK ASSURES ME THAT THERE ARE NO OUTSTANDING RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE.

THE FOLLOWING HAS BEEN SENT TO MERCEDES CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE All of the following has started happening since an exhaust recall was done by Mercedes. In September 2022, we were driving cross country to Denver Colorado and enough codes piled up in the background that we went into limp mode in the middle of 70 MPH highway traffic. This happened without warning and was an extreme safety concern. But I was lucky to be near an exit and already in the right lane. I reset these codes and finished going to Denver the next day. The two Sprinter dealers in Denver were backlogged several weeks; so we spent over $600 trying to troubleshoot the issues with Colorado Fleetworks, a qualified Sprinter specialist. He checked codes too; ran other diagnostics; replaced the fuel filter and air filter even though they had been done only 10,000 miles earlier; and performed a forced DPF regeneration. He also replaced the DPF pressure sensor. This work did not help change the daily multiple code problems. We had to reset them every day coming back from our trip. When we returned home we took it to the dealer. They confirmed the codes, reset them, and test drove it 25 miles. Since codes didn't return, they said, "There is nothing we can do if we don't witness active codes." I said, "How active do they have to be? I will have codes in the next 20 to 30 miles like I do every day I drive it." These never happened in the 6 years prior to the recall wok. Either the programming is confused, some of the new sensors are faulty, or something. A totally separate problem is the faulty factory crimps on the connector of the rail pressure sensor. This is a known defect; and we've had the exact same symptoms and code as noted in Xentry TSB MC-10135520-9999. The engine has actually cut off when turning into traffic a few times. This is an extreme safety concern.

WHEELE SPEED SENSOR PROBLEMS AND NEEDING REPLACED EVERY 3 4 MONTHS

NHTSA ID 11404661 · filed Mar 24, 2021

WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 30 MILES PER HOUR ON A SLIGHTLY BUMPY ROAD, THREE INDICATOR LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD STARTED TO SHOW PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS, ASR/BAS, AND EBD SYSTEMS. ACCORDING TO THE ONBOARD DIAGNOSTICS THE ROOT PROBLEM IS A FAULTY RIGHT REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR. THIS DESIGN SEEMS TO HAVE PUT THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR IN A DANGEROUS POSITION EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS, WHICH CAUSES IT TO DEGRADE AND STOP WORKING AT A HIGH RATE.

I LEFT MY MOTORHOME PARKED AND SECURED BY LOCKING DEADBOLT ON THE COACH DOOR. WHEN I RETURNED I COULD NOT OPEN THE DOOR. LOCKSMITH NOTED DOOR LATCH DEADBOLT IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO FAILURE WITHOUT NOTICE LEAVING OCCUPANT(S) UNABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. THE ACTUATOR ROD FOR THE DEADBOLT QUITE EASILY SLIPS FROM THE MECHANISM BECAUSE THE BACKING PLATE LEAVES TOO MUCH ROOM FOR UNINTENDED MOVEMENT WITH THE SIMPLE ACT OF SLAMMING THE DOOR TOO HARD LIKELY TO CAUSE FAILURE. WHILE THE DRIVER/PASSENGER VEHICLE DOORS OR REAR WINDOW FIRE ESCAPE ARE ALTERNATIVES TO EXIT, PANIC OR THE LOCATION OF A FIRE WITHIN THE MOTOR COACH MAY LEAVE OCCUPANTS WITH NO ESCAPE ROUTE IF THE MECHANISM FAILS WITH THE DEADBOLT IN THE LOCKED POSITION. LATCH INTERIOR IS ENGRAVED AS FOLLOWS: TRIMARK NEW HAMPTON RD/ENR 1993/72130 WITH THE NUMBERS 1107 HAND ENGRAVED ON THE CASE AS WELL.

I HAVE A 2015 COACHMAN PRISM RV ON A 2014 MERCEDES SPRINTER. IT HAS DUAL WHEELS. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO CHECK AIR PRESSURE ON THE DUAL . I TOOK IT TOO MERCEDES DEALERSHIP AND THEY PUT ON EXTENDERS. THE ONE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FAILED WITHIN 500 MILES. IT DUG A GROOVE IN THE ON TIRE AND THE VALVE STEM SPLIT. THE OTHER SIDE FAILED AFTER 3000 MILES. THE VALVE STEM SPLIT. I AM SURPRISED WITH THE EMPHASIS PUT ON PROPER TIRE PRESSURE THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM TODAY. I AM STILL LOOKING FOR SOLUTION. I AM LOOKING FOR HIGH QUALITY VALVE EXTENDERS AND A GOOD TIRE MONITORING SYSTEM. BOTH TIMES MY TIRE WENT FLAT IT WAS UNCERTAIN WHEN IT HAPPEN. BOTH TIMES I FOUND THE TIRE FLAT ON MY MORNING CHECK. KNOWING THAT I WAS PROBABLY DRIVING WITH A FLAT TIRE FOR SOME DISTANCE WAS SCARY KNOWING THAT THE OTHER TIRE COULD HAVE FAILED AT ANYTIME DUE TO THE ADDED WEIGHT IT WAS CARRYING AND COULD HAVE HAPPENED AT A TIME THAT CAUSED ME TO LOSE CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE. IN MY OPINION ALL VEHICLES WITH DUAL WHEELS SHOULD HAVE TIRE MONITORING SYSTEMS AND EASILY ACCESSIBLE VALVE STEMS.

ON: CITY STREET, IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. UPON PULLING OFF FROM A DEAD STOP, THE VEHICLE BEGAN JERKING, THEN ACCELERATING UNCONTROLLABLY. I COULD NOT SLOW THE VEHICLE WITH THE BRAKES. IF I HAD NOT MOVED THE GEAR SELECTOR TO NEUTRAL, I WOULD HAVE HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. ABS, ANTI-SKID, AND TRACTION WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON, AND I BARELY HAD ENOUGH POWER TO PULL OFF TO A SAFE PLACE. AFTER SITTING A FEW MINUTES, I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE SAFELY TO THE DEALER. DEALER REPLACED RIGHT REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR UNDER WARRANTY WITH WHAT THEY CALLED AN "IMPROVED PART", BUT THERE ARE THREE MORE SPEED SENSORS. *DT*JB
